Read the catalyst book it explains it perfectly. I always thought the scenes in ATOC and ROTS where they show the Death Star were tacky but once you read the book it all fits together perfectly.

It's George Lucas Canon because it's in the screenplay for his film ESB and not in contradiction with the actual film. That's the canon I'm first and foremost interested in, and that's the one I exclusively consider reliable and genuine when it comes to the OT (unless somebody seriously wants to claim that other people, that were not involved with the original productions or not even born, then, should know better ).

For the Sequel Trilogy and the anthology films it's a different matter.

Fine, scripts should be canon (not deleted scenes, even if they are in the script), Death Star technology is still kyber based technology and has nothing to do with nuclear fusion or any other hypothetical Earth energy source. After all, physics in Star Wars? Sound in space? :D

According to Lucas deleted scenes are also canon as long as these don't contradict any of his six films (admittedly, there are some deleted scenes that do contradict - i.e. Owen Lars being Kenobi's brother according to the extended ROJ screenplay - and therefore are not canon)

Death Star technology is *now* kyber based, after Pablo Hidalgo hinted that in one of the Rebels Retcon programs last year, previously the official Lucasfilm books (e.g. Incredible Cross Sections) followed Saxton's lead, i.e. that the Death Star uses a hypermatter / antimatter particle beam to destroy planets.

I don't see the contradiction, yet. Either kyber based technology is a part to help create or use hypermatter or merely the secondary function of the superweapon, first seen in ROJ and now in RO. The planet killer beam is obviously a particle beam, containing pockets of exotic matter. Maybe kyber technology helps to stabilize this beam or else:

    Death Star firing (interior tube).jpg

(Considering that the Death Star is tiny next to a planet, its surface area roughly equals that of Maine, a laserbeam from the superweapon would have the same effect as an injection needle put into an arm).

While I'm rather confident that the Death Star has an artificial atmosphere as a natural shield against small space debris, the issue of sound in space and the movement of spaceships is a concession to the audience and owed to storytelling purposes. Same applies for the music, as I'm certain that the protagonists didn't hear it just as we did (with the exception of the medal ceremony in ANH, perhaps).

Other than that I see no harm to investigate technology and other issues in the SW Universe with some earnestness to provide it with a credible background which ultimately helps the suspension of disbelief.

    This part is wrong.

    From the Catalyst:

Kyber crystals take the energy and refract it in all directions causing destruction. In Catalyst, Galen tries to direct the energy the way Jedi use the Force on their lightsaber crystals. So, he imagines the scientific process similar to Dark Side 'bleeding' of the crystals to alter them so they can be able to release focused, not refracted, energy under the pressure. Finally, he is able to cut them (after altering them) in a way that produces concentrated beam of energy. After a while, the crystals are "drained of their inherent power" - so they are, in a way, consumed. They are the fuel for the superlaser.

It's pretty funny to consider the sheer ballsiness of these Geonosians selling Darth Sidious the plans to what - without the weapon - is surely just a massive round space station which just, perhaps, someone else may have been able to come up with.

You can just imagine them edging away from Palpatine with their briefcase full of cash:-

"... and you are sure the powerful weapon outlined in these plans will work?"

"Oh, yes Sir! For sure Sir!"

    :p

Oh, good for the Empire that Tarkin didn't order the complete destruction of Jedha then, otherwise it would be an aweful loss of fuel supply :D

And, I get the feeling that if it would be up to Krennic, the DS would have destroyed the entire planet. So, I guess there are other sources of kyber crystals besides Jedha? Or perhaps they had enough already. But if so, why the big mining operation the empire seems to have there?

Welcome to the Cantina, @greenbalrog. (I take it you're a LOTR fan...)

I got the impression that the crystals had all been mined from the Temple area by the Empire, where the kyber crystals had been centered. Cassian tells Jyn that the Guardians of the Whills no longer have anything to guard in the kyber temple, so now they're just making trouble.

I'm still confused by the Death Star construction at the end of ROTS, and how it fits into the timeline. I mean, Tarkin can clearly see the battle station from the Star Destroyer, but cannot guess what top-secret project is being constructed around Geonosis five years later? This makes my head hurt :D.

Palpatine started building it immediately after getting the plans (in AotC). He made a secret weapons branch not even Jedi new about under the excuse that they have to make it before the Separatists (Catalyst).

    Where is that from?

What I meant is that if the Death Star was being constructed over Geonosis, then Tarkin would have had to travel there at the end of ROTS, which is why it is weird he doesn't know what's being constructed there five years later.
    The novel Tarkin.

Wow, I don't remember that at all from Tarkin. Maybe re-read is in order. Or a question for Pablo for those who have twitter. :D

I just reread the opening chapter of the novel. Tarkin is not just aware of Death Star, he actively participates in its construction and is worried about protecting it after one of the bases involved with the construction is attacked. That is even before he is promoted to the Grand Moff and given the overall control at the end of the novel.

I thought I WAS: "Am I insane or what? I thought Tarkin gave the Emperor the idea for super weapon."

But, still, I forgot just HOW GOOD that novel was. I must reread it, the chapters about his survival trials are simply superb. And it was as if Luceno entered his head.

Yes, I am. And thanks, it's great to be among such excellent and admirable star wars fans :)

Yes, the temple area seem to have deposits of keyber crystals, and with it emptied there would be no use to guard it. But, one would assume there would be other kyber mines in the planet besides around the temple. From the Star Wars wikia: "Within the moon's (Jedha) sandstone crust were rich deposits of kyber crystals".

However, I get that in the large scheme of things neither Tarkin nor Krennic would care about one source of kyber crystals being lost as fuel for their super weapon, assuming there were other places in the galaxy where they could be found. But, perhaps they had plenty.

My point was that if it were up to Krennic they would have destroyed the entire planet, and with it a huge amount of kyber resources in the process. Good, for the empire, that he was not calling the shots in that day. My memory fades though, I'll have to watch it again to see how close the planet was from total destruction.

I hope you are enjoying yourself as much as I am. ;)

Yes, it does make sense that there could be other kyber deposits elsewhere on the planet. The blast at Jedhi city seems to have affected quite a wide swath of area, although nothing planet-wide, and maybe they could come back to it if there wasn't a radiation issue or anything. But I think you're right to assume that they must have assumed they had plenty of kyber either stored or accessible elsewhere.

Still, the Empire, including Krennic, didn't seem to mind stripping out anything "easily" acquired in a number of planets/systems and leaving what was left destroyed and dying--in fact, this is one of the things in Catalyst that opens Lyra Erso's eyes to the machinations of the Empire. Then when she finds out how disposable its scientists are...

So the Bothans gave the Rebellion the information for the DS2 plans. They didn't go on a mission to steal the plans like their Rogue One counterparts?

There is still no new canon explanation except that one Mothma's sentence that many of them died to get that information. But, if they died, it's safe to save that there was some kind of mission involved.
