I saw a Yahoo article (I know, I know) that suggested that "Skywalker" is a new title like "Darth" -- as opposed to a variant on "Jedi" or "Sith".

I think there is a general understanding, even if you’re not a SW fan, that there is a difference between what it’s consider a name/surname and a dynasty. In the world of the SW saga, Skywalker has become a dynastic bloodline more than a name. It’s obvious to everyone paying the slightest bit of attention that Ben and Leia are Skywalker, even if they are named Solo and Organa.

Yup, that was my thoughts initially. The naming convention would be FIRST NAME + SKYWALKER. It's all speculation by these articles but it seems to be a prevailing theory out there.

The whole point of Rey nobody is that you can be whoever you want to be. She's made a name for herself thanks to the things she's done. You aren't defined by your bloodline. Leia is a Skywalker, but her identity comes from Bail Organa and her adopted family. Ben Solo is the son of Han and Leia. His bloodline makes him powerful in the force, but he's a Solo too. Taking that away and calling him Skywalker is disrespectful to Han and Leia. Leia would not consider herself a Skywalker.

I guarantee JJ isn't going to spit on Han and Leia and refer to him in name as Skywalker.

After Anakin passed away there was ONE person named Skywalker and that's Luke. After Luke passed away there were ZERO Skywalkers left. Two that still carry the bloodline. You don't name a movie about two people in the bloodline that never used the name.

I'm actually thinking it'd be SKYWALKER + FIRST NAME. Skywalker Rey.

I don’t follow this logic. There is nothing disrespectful about acknowledging a bloodline.

If that wreckage is from the first Death Star, they better be careful around that water. There could be a dianoga in it!

I think he is acknowledging that they share in the blood line, but they haven't shared in the name, and that's a fair observation. Leia has Skywalker blood, but she's never been called Leia Skywalker. Same with Ben. I don't think he or anyone is disputing that they have the blood, but that they never take on the name (nor do we expect them to). And that he believes it's unlikely the title TROS is in reference to him specifically (Ben) turning back.

I'll throw this out there again: Do we know if Shmi Skywalker was an only child? Did she have any siblings?

But that still doesn’t make sense because skywalker in the title could easily mean Ben Solo is acknowledging his “skywalker” blood and therefore “rising” as such.

We know absolutely nothing about Shmi other that she was born with the Skywalker surname and that she is not a native of Tatooine.

Btw title, I noticed something, but maybe I'm just crazy...

    giphy.gif

The subtitle "The Rise Of Skywalker" is revealed from the bottom up, symbolizing a rise. With The Last Jedi it was the other way around.

Do you think anyone in the film like Rey or Finn would say "Skywalker is back?" referring to Ben Solo? The Rise of Skywalker needs to make sense in the context of the film.

It also needs to make sense in the context of the Episodic films being the "Skywalker Saga" and The context of Rey being the Sequel Trilogy's protagonist.

Nice... but is it rising or is 'Star Wars' separating to reveal the title turning from narrow to broad?

It would make sense context wise, if Kylo gets redeemed and breaks the "Skywalker curse".

    The lighting reveals the subtitle.

Let's compare it with the other two movies:
    TheLastJedi.gif
    UEcc.gif

Each movie as a different style. That's quite interesting to me.

Hmmmm... is there anything else in this franchise that progressed from Yellow (Gold), Red, and then Blue? Just wondering if there is any symbolism in the colors being used or...

...maybe it's just a color they picked?

Here's a reach, they started out on a desert planet in TFA and SKB ended up turning into a sun , spent a fair amount of their time on Crait planet which was full of the red salt, maybe now we're seeing blue because they'll spend a lot of time in water? *Cue Conspiracy Theory Music*

You see, we still don’t know what they mean by Skywalker. In 9 they may address how kylo is a skywalker for those who are new to the story or those who haven’t been paying attention.

I don’t know what they mean by Skywalker in the title, but I’m not ready to discard any possibility yet.

In the Kylo clip of the trailer he's going left to right. :D

He just pokes him with the hilt. Just jabbing the small blade into his belly.

haven't seen any discussion about what might be inside Rey's white bag at the end of the trailer. Sith relics? SCUBA? Luke's Jedi research? Poe and Finn have bags too. Maybe just a change of clothes... or are they all carrying pieces of something important?

I’d say scuba. Those guys are swimming under and around that baby (epic fail), oh yeah...
yes, I think JJ is showing the full potential of kylo’s saber and its design.
