They announced a date for spinoff 1 before it started filming but we have no date for viii yet and 2017 is filling up fast

No chance of delays - too much money is riding on all 'trilogy' films meeting their release year time-frames, and there will be less administrative drama with Episodes VIII-IX because Disney has long since completed purchasing Star Wars and well and truly ramped-up all areas of brand exploitation. ILM's expanded, scripts are being written, lots of story-group meetings and concept art will be being rattled off.

I know they don't have an exact day, but are they sticking with the December dates for Episode 8 & 9?

Variety, www.Variety.com has a new article today saying ILM/Disney has Pinewood already booked for EP8. They will be in pre-production, early 2015. I wouldn't doubt if EP8 will be in full production by fall 2015. Disney & ILM would be wise to avoid any major scenes or main characters until early Dec 2015 to avoid leaks or set rumors.
To have major plots/story ideas or scenes ruined even before EP7 comes out would NOT be good. :(

I'd imagine Episode 8 will remain in pre-production until spring 2016, and then step up after the first spin-off film is nearing the end of photography. It still has lots of time to be completed before the winter 2017 release date. Episode 8 and 9 productions may overlap if they are both being plotted by the same writer, so an Episode 9 treatment, concept artwork and some rough animatics will already be underway while Episode 8 is just starting to do the rounds in the cinemas.

Disney/LFL doesn't need to hurry up to announce a date. They are the 800 pound gorilla. Besides, when Disney did announce December 18th 2015 for Episode VII movies moved off, IE got out of the way. Other studios fear Star Wars NOT vice versa.

Well, you didn't say it but you implied it by stating that Disney had to hurry to secure a date.

If Episode 7 delivers it should blow Avatar sequels out of the water. Man I hated the first Avatar movie. :)

I LOVE every James Cameron movie, except Avatar. I never understood the love for the movie, and could care less about the sequels.

I agree, more or less. I like all his movies, except "Avatar" (which I think it's just a overgrown and overrated Hi-Tech version of "Dances with Wolves"). The only one I can say I really love is "True Lies".

I liked Avatar....the first time I saw it....when it was called "Fern Gully". Anyhoo, my concern is total NO NEWS on the NEXT Star Wars thing which should be the first spinoff, yeah? Surely it's well into the production phase. Call it the The Force Awakens eclipse, but this thing is flying under the radar, which could be a cool thing.

    Yes, exactly! +1000

With all the hype surrounding Episode VII (and interest in Rebels even) the filmmakers on the other projects -- Gary Whitta, Gareth Edwards, & Rian Johnson -- are all flying under the radar. Wayyyy under.

As for Avatar -- I enjoyed watching it in 3D because it was specifically filmed for it. BUT IMO it was not a good film otherwise.

Me too about Avatar! I watched it in 3D and like it the first time I watched it. Second time on blur-ray..., realised I didn't much care for it. Cameron should consider making Ep8 or 9 instead of Avatar 2, 3 and 4.
