Design a Rogue One crawl. . . .

In the span of a
generation no filmmaker
has been able to come
up with an original idea.

So here is the story of
what happened before that
movie you liked with some
of the characters you liked.

 

Episode III.V

ROGUE ONE

The Clone Wars are over, and the
galaxy has entered a period of
rebuilding.

Idealistic scientist Galen Erso has
gone into hiding after learning
that his research into kyber
crystals fueled the empire's new
super-weapon, the DEATH STAR.

Meanwhile, the Empire's elites
jostle for power, hoping to catch
the favor of the Emperor....

I can't like on a post yet, so let me just say, Bravo DarthWalker, Bravo!

 

There's a 330 page crawl available already. Its called Catalyst.

 

"Fifteen years ago, scientist GALEN ERSO was taken hostage by Imperial DIRECTOR KRENNIC to continue work on a terrifying SECRET WEAPON.

In an effort to try to sabotage the project, Galen sent an Imperial pilot BODHI ROOK to bring sensitive data to the REBELLION. Unfortunately, Rook was taken captive by Rebel schism leader SAW GUERERRA.

Meanwhile, Rebellion agent CASSIAN ANDOR recieves word that Galen's daughter, JYN ERSO, is being held in an Imperial labor camp. The Rebel Alliance believes that the may be key to meeting with Guererra, retrieving Galen's message, and ultimately discovering what Galen's legacy is capable of."


This way, a lot of the choppy exposition can be cut out of the film. Also, I like Cassion going after Jyn instead of Bodhi, as it is more direct and to the point.

 

One Week before The Tantive IV was captured, a group of Rebels were able to secure plans at a cost.
Don't worry, Jar Jar isnt in this even though it's a prequel.
But don't get too attached to the characters.

 

The fact that the film starts with a flashback 13 years before the main film makes the crawl tricky in that it always tells what is happening at that moment in time in which the film starts. It does not tell what is definitely going to happen in the movie you are about to watch. This is probably one reason why there was no crawl. Or, they could've opened the film with on Jyn in prison and then recalling the flashback from that point. But any crawl would've told about the growth of the Rebellion, with new systems joining the cause, the establishment of a Rebel fleet and base on Yavin 4:


The galaxy is at a breaking point. The oppressive control of the GALACTIC EMPIRE has motivated several star systems to rise up and form an alliance determined to oppose the Emperor and restore liberty to a people suffering under his tyranny.

The REBEL ALLIANCE has assembled a formidable fleet, and have established a hidden base on the fourth moon of Yavin. They act with great risk to their own lives as the Empire seeks to mercilessly eradicate their fragile band and everything that they stand for.

Motivated by intelligence of the development a terrible new Imperial weapon, the Alliance seeks to act quickly to disrupt the progress on its completion, which gravely threatens the Rebellion and any hope for the cause of freedom…

 

ROGUE ONE

The Clone Wars are over. From the ashes of
the Old Republic, the GALACTIC EMPIRE
has risen to bring order to the broken pieces
of the galaxy.

The Jedi, guardians of peace, have fallen and
faded into history and myth. As the power of
the Empire spreads, in secret they have constructed
a weapon that will destroy any form of resistance.

In order to complete this dreaded DEATH STAR,
the Empire has hunted down renowned scientist
and idealist GALEN ERSO, the only man who
can create the main weapon. In such times,
few dare dream of hope...​

Given the fact that Rogue One opens with a flashback, it seems like the logical place for an opening crawl would be exactly where they put the title - after the scenes on Lah'mu, and right before Cassian's first scene on the Ring of Kafrene. That way, the crawl would set the stage for the main story, rather than focusing on the flashback.

Therefore, in some Bizarro World parallel universe in which I had any say in the matter whatsoever, I'd have suggested something like this:

ROGUE ONE​

(A Star Wars Story)​

The galaxy trembles in the iron
grip of the evil Galactic Empire,
its citizens living in constant terror
of arrest - or worse - at the hands
of the Emperor's ruthless soldiers.

On hundreds of oppressed worlds,
resistance groups have formed in
opposition to Imperial tyranny. The
Rebel Alliance seeks to rally these
groups into a united front against
the Empire

Rebel agent Cassian Andor, chasing
rumors of a mysterious Imperial military
project, has traveled deep into the Outer
Rim territories to meet with one of his
underground contacts...​
