I was just checking out some behind the scene's pics about ANH when I suddenly came upon these pics:

Poor drunk Ponda Baba was not only going to loose his arm but his head as well! I wonder if after planning that scene, George Lucas might have thought it was too graphic and just decided to go with the arm.

Have any of you guys and gals ever read if he was going to get beheaded in the script?

Jaws was the first movie to get an R rating...if this was put in than R would have happened in 1977 which I'm sure Lucas wouldnt have wanted plus it might even dejected disney from buying it now with a beheading

    Jaws was rated PG.

I'm glad Ponda got to keep his head. It would have been a bit much.

Indeed! I imagine the reaction of all the little kids in the theatre and I'm also pretty sure many children wouldn't have gotten their Walrus Man figure either!

"With an astounding agility, old Ben's laser sword sparks to life and in a flash an arm lies on the floor. The rodent is cut in two and the giant, multiple-eyed creature lies doubled, cut from chin to groin." SW screenplay March 15, 1976

In this draft Roofoo ('Dr. Evazan' - I prefer to use the George Lucas Canon name of Roofoo) lost his arm, 'Ponda Baba' was still the multiple-eyed landspeeder dealer and the rodent was the alien usually known as 'Kabe' (if you pay close attention to the scene in the film, you can see that these three are hanging out together).

Interesting. The more extreme gore is consistent with the more adult ideas in early SW scripts -- there are storyboards where Vader rips a rebel's arm off during the Tantive IV battle, and some of Ralph McQuarrie's storyboards indicate Lucas even considered having nudity in the film.

I wonder if not wanting over the edge gore was the very same reason that the scene about Chewie ripping off Unkar Plutt's arm never made it into the movie? And yeah I wouldn't doubt about Lucas thinking about including nudity in the film as Oola is almost nude in the film and you can clearly see her nipples in some takes.

And early costume sketches for Leia's slave outfit in ROTJ used the mesh top that was later given to Oola.
