Just fun post on an observation I made in the chase scene on Jakku....

When Rey, Finn & BB-8 are being chased on Jakku, and as they are making their final run on foot to the Falcon, we are cut to a lone close-up shot of BB-8 rolling along behind them. At that moment he turns his head to the camera, makes a few beeps and boops, then turns his head back to the front and carries on, then we cut back to Rey and Finn running up the ramp-way.

What would BB-8 possibly have been looking/talking at, other than the audience in that shot? It may be nothing, but if this was indeed JJ giving us a 4th wall break in a Star Wars movie.... I applaud you sir!

Very well could be, but an easier answer is that JJ wanted to put the focus on BB-8 for a moment, and it's simply more appealing to see him beep-boop then just rolling really fast.

I want to say R2 has done that, but I can't think of a particular instance off the top of my head.

Yeah, not sure if R2 has ever done that either. Would have to go through movies. It's just the fact that he turns his head and looks right at the camera(breaking the 4th wall does not require dialogue, it can be done with a look... just watch a couple episodes of House of Cards and you will see what I mean). Hell he may have just been trying to see where the TIE-fighters were.... but I wanna go with the fact he broke the 4th wall, just because! - Lol

Man, going through the movies again... that's rough... Haha.
You have the liberty to think that! I won't argue otherwise!

BB-8, rolling, looking to camera: "Get ready for an action-loaded chase scene!" :D

I think BB-8 represents us, the viewer. Similar to R2-D2 an C-3PO in ep. 1 - 6, we experience TFA through the eyes (eye) of BB-8. A 4th wall breaking would be a legit way to show this. If you know what I mean. Or maybe it´s to much interpretation.

He looks like he's staring off into the distance for a second and JJ simply thought it was a cool shot ...

there's a few times in the movies this happens. bb-8 in this, 3po in others and r2-d2. boba fett in e4 (though this is not in the original version). at least, it looks like they are breaking the 4th. but i cant tell if they are actually purposely writing it that way, or if its an illusion caused by the angle. but they're definitely looking toward the camera and speaking dialogue, when no one is around to hear it but the audience who just happens to be the direction of where he's looking. or in the case of bb-8 and r2 making digital sounds. boba fett just looks. if i had to guess i'd think they were doing a half/half meaning they say "look around when you do such and such, and toward the camera, as a breaking of the 4th wall with 'plausible deniability' built in, so it isn't a jarring use of breaking the 4th?

i don't think it's too much interpretation because as i mentioned, r2 and 3po do this a couple of times, too. so it is all of the "audience vehicles" doing it, and it does create a "rapport". excellent insight. the only exception is the boba fett 4th-breaker in the "special editions" and that was surely fan service, yet of the same kind.

Thread title: Did BB-8 break the 4th wall?
In my opinion threads of this nature are unnecessary.

Is this the same technique? Superman saying good bye at the end of the old movies.

I think we can see this in TESB when C3p0 was left behind and he looks at the camera and says: "how typical".

Need to pay more attention at bb8 when I get my bluray.

yep 3po's 'how typical' there's a few actually, and in the beginning of phantom menace when r2 is repairing the shield generator when they're running the blockade r2 does what looks like a 4th wall break as he turns and looks right toward the camera.

In the Phantom Menace, When he's working on the shield generator on the Naboo ship (the shiny one), Artlo turns to the camera and does a little bleep-bloop sound.

-Yep, R2 did break the fourth wall. In A New Hope at 00:10:12. C-3P0 and R2 are going different directions on Tatooine. He looks forward, back to C-3P0, then to the camera.

I always thought Threepio broke the fourth wall in TESB, when he's chasing Han and company through the corridors of Echo Base and is cut off by a blast door, turns to the camera and says, "How typical."

EDIT: Whoops! Somebody already beat me to it in a post above...

Hmm, how interesting. I, personally, don’t think that was the case. I think it was the angle in which the shot was taken and the way bb-8 moves his head piece.
