It is no secret that there have been a ton of news stories about the struggle it was to get the Solo movie to the screen.

The trailer has been a refreshing surprise to most fans; giving the movie a ton of optimism. My question is, did Disney consciously let the negative press get to this point so that expectations were lowered to the extent that it has the surprise and shock value of it actually being good. TLJ may have been too hyped, did they take a step back purposefully for Solo?

When so little is expected, even moderate reviews would sound great in headlines.

"Solo surprises with a fun thrill ride in the vein of Star Wars"

"Solo shocks with a fun adventure"

Do you think Disney purposefully embraced the negative press to help temper expectations and surprise audiences with a decent movie?

No. You're looking for the "Disney expects Solo to Bomb" thread. Different title, same mess. It's absurdity rightly fell off of the front page.

I think it is completely the opposite.

Disney knows they are sitting on a far better movie than what is currently being speculated. Disney has been very quiet about all of it. Those "Expected to bomb" headlines aren't coming from Disney or confirmed sources. It is clickbait stuff that keeps getting recycled through all of those "news" pages online.

I feel you. It's possible that they are working the negative vibe to blindside folks, but I think that they never responded to the negative press because they wanted us to see what they have rather than telling us what they have.

I agree, that's sort of what I was getting at. Disney is never going to just ignore and let the movie speak for itself without it being part of a marketing strategy. That may be what they are technically doing, but it hasn't been done without thought or planning.

Low expectations can do wonderous things. That said, I'm certainly not getting tickets early.

It is certainly perfectly possible but I tend to think the extent of the director change, reshooting the principle photography, the reshoots of that, and a movie that takes place forty years or whatever later starting it's run six months before this one are the big contributors.

The schedule is super tight. I think that makes for a perfectly reasonable answer on its own.
Sure they could have put something but there was no special need to.

I find your explanation perfectly plausible but also unnecessary to reasonably describe the situation.

This could actually be true. Knowing they are sitting on a pretty good film, just let the internet nerds (us) whine for a while, then lay a perfectly serviceable trailer on us.

I could see that happening. (it did happen) There has been way too much pearl-clutching about this film already. I think it will be fun!

Hmm, interesting idea but that doesn't sound like Disney at all. They usually act as if production went as well as a can be. Even on the R1 behind the scenes bonus material they are constantly trying to downplay the difficulties they encountered while shooting the movie. And after the divisive nature of TLJ I'm pretty sure that they want to reassure audiences that they are still capable of producing high quality movies.
