Technically, Han did not shoot "first." He was the only person who fired a shot at all.

This. But I'm salty George changed it. It does take away from the character and we still know he always had it in him even with shooting Greedo.

Either way, Han shot in self-defense. Greedo was pointing a gun at him.

Got to be impossible for Greedo to miss at that range so Han shoots first and the impact knocks Greedo back as he reflexively pulls the trigger and misses

Han shot the bounty hunter because why not. Take me and my ship or just shot you and have another drink.

    Han shot first.

Han has ALWAYS shot first, and had the only shot.

Han avoided getting his scruffy head blown off by a gekko.

    Die Greedo, DIE!!

Self preservation as it should be...unspoken spaceport stand-your-ground policy.

Great observation! And I think the Solo movie made it clear how important having a ship is to Han. The OT made it clear that the Falcon was special to him, but Solo made it clear why having a ship, any ship, was crucial to his livelyhood and his independence.

That’s a good point. It’s an indelible part of the character that’s subtly been there from the start. “There's no mystical energy field that controls MY destiny.” Han is someone who decides (or believes he does) his own fate. The Falcon is a big part of what makes that possible. Makes sense that was a pivotal part to his spinoff. Some nice reinforcement.

But, more than that, there’s a personal affection for it. It’s not just a vehicle to him. He dotes on it like a proud dad. He calls it “baby”. It’s such a ‘gear head’ (Lucas) thing to do. It helps to make him relatable and likeable from the jump. Him, Chewie, the Falcon - they’re a family. You mess with one of them, you mess with all of them. I’ve always really loved that :)
I don’t know who this poor “Only” guy is/was, but if Han shot him, he probably had it coming :D

In the original non-special edition versions of New Hope, Han is the only one who shoots, Greedo doesn't shoot at all.

The Special Editions added the Greedo shooting scene because they didn't want people to think that Han was a "cold-blooded killer" (which is complete bs).

Surely there is one Star Wars fan somewhere who prefers Greedo shooting first. George doesn't count.

Both Han and Greedo shot at the same time. Han was lucky.

Not in the original version. Han didn't want to rely on luck and just shot Greedo before he could even pull the trigger. Therfore the Special Edition of ANH kinda "ruins" Han Solo's character in this very moment.

There we go, The change in the SE was necessary, otherwise this would have been out of character for Han because he didn't stab first.

Imagine how amazing that moment would have been. If Han shot Ben in that moment. Nobody would have seen it coming.

I find it so hard to believe that many people are wailing that Han's character was "ruined" in the SE because he didn't shoot at Greedo first. In the eyes of many, Han's character development hangs around whether he drew his gun first or Greedo. I have never heard of anything so ridiculous in my life. Never mind that he was willing to leave Leia - an innocent woman - behind at the mercy of the Empire for the sake of his hide, it was the fact that he shot Greedo before the latter could shoot him was supposed to make him "roguish" or "ambiguous".
