Usually I'd agree with you, but for the general audience a lot of the force/magic/fantasy stuff is out of their grasp. Most dummy's just want to see action which is why Rogue One got such high praise. :) It wouldn't take long to explain that Snoke and Ben set a trap for Luke using an ancient weapon. This could also explain how the death sta..eghhemm Star Killer base works a bit. An ancient Sith/Alien weapon would be easier to give credit to such power as draining a star because it is so foreign to us it can't be explained so it makes SK base less stupid. lol

I actually think Luke did lose his powers via force drain trap by Snoke/Ben, but that seeking out the first Jedi Temple has the medi-chlorian count regenerating in his body so towards the end of ep 8 we'll see him back to full master a$$ kicking status. :)

@master_shaitan having read the Force drain theory:

assuming Snoke relies on the dark side of the Force to survive is just that: assumption. we can probably assume he has some connection to the Force, seeing as to how he mentions completing Kylo Ren's training, but to suggest he relies on the Force to stay alive is a stretch. we don't even know how old he truly is; he could just be a grandfather age, not hundreds or thousands and years. and besides, if he was so old, why isn't it because of his alien physiology, ala Yoda or Maz?

has it been confirmed in the new book that the site on Jakku was an ancient Sith site? i remember reading a Reddit blurb about this a day or two ago and although Palps kept some stuff there, i can't recall reading that it was definitely a Sith site.

what happens after being Force drained, i wonder? if Luke has indeed been drained, how did he survive? or is it not fatal? also, if Snoke did somehow drain Luke to support his own life, then why does he still look like a half dead zombie? surely absorbing the powers of a Skywalker would get you in pretty good shape! arguing that he was in even poorer shape prior to the Force draining or events of TFA is sort of ridiculous as he knew the Solos; unless he was a walking cadaver during their relationship, i assume draining Luke doesn't have to do with keeping him healthy.

i guess the Force drain is a potential avenue for the story moving forward, but i'm not sold just yet.

There is nothing that tells us very much about Snoke but what I logically deduce is that isn't exactly in great health. We're told he is strangely vulnerable. To me he looks on the verge of death (in the script it says after one exchange it looks like he "dies for a moment"). And so how would a being that looks so close to death not only survive but clearly have a plan to return to full power ("when he gets what he wants he'll crush you). My view is that he is using the power of the dark side to survive which leads me on to...

Palpatine saying that there was a location on Jakku that was significant (to the Sith) 1000 years ago and he wants to make it significant again. Considering this and the fact that Jakku was once a fertile world I think that whatever was here that long ago did something to the planet. And so the other thing that seems to be being brought into canon is Force trees. They can imbue people with the force. But what if the Sith once used them to drain the force and this is what happened on Jakku? Now Tashu describes in Aftermath the Sith ability of force draining so perhaps the ancient Sith adapted his power to drain an entire planet through the Force trees?

How does force draining work? I have no idea and that's why I have asked Pablo about it (but had no response). I guess it could be about tormenting/poisoning ones mind in some way. Or maybe something more literal as we see with the bad guy in the latest Star Trek film? I mean what was that research facility doing on Jakku? Some sources call it a weapons factory. Perhaps they developed a Force weapon that could be focused upon an individual? Do we even need to know the facts? This is a fantasy film after all. And if people really wanted to know then I'm sure midichlorians could have a part to play.

I'm personally against the idea of Luke being uber powerful or indeed just unwilling to get involved. And there has to be something in place that stops him from being the hero and not needing Rey. Losing his power in some way seems logical and with this force draining/Force tree stuff being revealed I think it's a strong potential...

yeah, i'm hesitant to apply too much importance to the whole Force trees thing. it just feels too Tolkienesque in my head. also, they've only ever been mentioned in the comics, so again, i'm hesitant to apply too much importance to it in relation to the saga as a whole. for example, take Maul coming back again and again: it's important for fans, and for story lines that run parallel to the saga, but it doesn't really impact the core films. as far as those movies are concerned, Maul's been dead since TPM.

i'm not sure how important the Jakku facility is, but seeing as to how this planet plays a large part in TFA i'm willing to bet we haven't discovered all the secrets there yet. despite only appearing in the novels, this site Palps was so interested in will likely come into the saga films and play something of a role. how important it will end up being over all we shall see, but i do agree that something is up. it could just be that it lead the FO to developing the super weapon Star Killer, or it could have to do with the nature of the Force itself; who knows!

have you read that Reddit leak for the new book? some Canadian couple managed to get a couple copies and they were sharing stuff as they read through it. something about Palps sensing a dark side energy coming from beyond Jakku, in the unknown regions, an energy that even Vader seemed oblivious to. it also mentions how Rax thought Palps may have been losing it as no one else seemed to be supporting the theory of a mysterious dark side energy emitting from the beyond.

as for Luke's power level, i never thought of him being all powerful, nor would i expect him to be. even Vader, Palps, and Yoda are shown as not being all powerful, and they are arguably the strongest Force wielders canon has produced. Jedi aren't invincible or god like, they just have unique and powerful abilities. i predict that no Force draining took place in regards to Luke, and that although powerful, he is far from the uber character you are not wanting to see (understandably!).

    Maybe I should retitle this:

First time reading this @master_shaitan , and it's a compelling argument.

Something I found especially intriguing, though, is how you spotted that the script depicts Snoke as being weak, perhaps even on the verge of death.

Seeing him use the Force on Rey - if this isn't a vision of some sort - in VIII, though? It's a bit soon to have our protagonist face the main villain, don't you think?

Unless he's not the main villain.

What if Kylo turns darker, killing Snoke in this film after he repeatedly asks him to stop harming Rey, before he takes her away himself?

I think we will see Snoke in this one doing this to Rey because by this point we will know that Kylo Ren is no longer the antagonist.
It might even be that the film ends with Rey taken away by Snoke and we don't know what she will be like in IX.
Hard to say. But I think Han pointed it out to Ben in TFA - "when he gets what he wants he will crush you".
I think this could be a hint about Snoke's ultimate plans. He sucks the living Force out of people to strengthen himself.

My theory has always been Kylo will usurp Snoke to separate himself from Vader (who never could usurp Palpatine until the very end).
Kylo becomes the big bad by the end of the trilogy setting up the next one

I agree: I've thought either this or his redemption (or his own exile) would be the only real options for Kylo, and I've mentioned before about how this could set up he next trilogy quite well, with him as the primary antagonist once again.

But then...I don't really want to see X, XI and XII become a thing, personally.

I respect these thoughts from master shaitan. But personally im quite fed up with the Jedi, particularly the light side always to be portraited as a kind of weaker...passive holding back side.I would so like to see confident, pride light side warrior(s) ala Mace Windu, Qui gon and Obi one....taking names and kicking arse.Leading to badly supressed fear and doubts in the likes of Kylo.In the light of this I would prefer that Luke has his own personal reasons for his hiatus without painting him weak or mentally disillusioned. To me It works fine if he is actually pissed and bitter at Kylo..at himself... at many things.Leaving him to walk on the fine edge of the force...perhaps fearing or trying to figure out how to achieve that without falling to the darkside. That being one of the reasons he is a hermit and trying to consolidate old ancient Jedi texts.Maybe it all starts with Rey arriving,Lukes chance to teach her in the Jedi ways as he has come to understand them through his study of ancient texts...and to an extent. His own experiences.

Is there any doubt that Luke dies? Seems pretty obvious.

If they allow Kylo to be the next big bad, after this trilogy, I want another one. We've been without a new truly great iconic villain for so long. Let Kylo become that. Give him that chance.

You're so right, I do want Kylo to evolve into a Big Bad.

Let's see the XT and then call it quits, huh? My biggest worry is that the great John Williams might not be around to compose the score by then :(

Its Kylo and not Snoke that carries the emotion. It was Kylo that has destroyed the "Happily Ever After" of the OT:
1- He is a child of the rebellion's greatest heroes.
2- His betrayal destroyed the new generation of Jedi.
3- His fall seems to have broken apart the princess and the pirate.

That's all before the film starts.

4- In TFA he took the last steps in his Anti-Luke journey. Luke tossed aside his sabre, wouldn't kill his father and became a Jedi. Kylo when confronted with his father struck him down.

Is Snoke the leader of the 1st Order sure but the villain who took the most from the heroes is Kylo.

Don't buy the Reylo hype. Ren already is the main antagonist.

I think Luke lost his power himself by losing faith in himself.

I think this is more likely.
If the force does exist in everything, then losing belief in it would seemingly limit your ability.
It makes a ton of sense when you look at the force is *mostly* discussed in canon

I agree. That does seem to be the way they have gone. I felt Luke had to lose his power hence the origins of this theory. But then I saw that shot of Rey is it is exactly how I imagined Snoke would force drain someone...

But there is no proof he has lost power. There have been multiple actors saying Luke is going to be very powerful.

He is Merlin prior to Arthur pulling the sword from the Stone. Due to personal tragedy he flees to the wilderness to live as a hermit. Perhaps a touch of grief induced madness but now Excalibur has resurfaced.

    Two points though:

Luke is jaded. Hamill even said he "doubts his connection to the Force", due to the mistakes he made with Ben. Could this depression and subsequent lack of connection not actually diminish his power? Makes sense to me that it would.

Second, the cosmic Force has been dormant for some time. It seems that Rey has awakened it, or rather the light side in some way (as Ben awakened the Dark Side). Does this not suggest that Luke hasn't been using the Force himself?

I have a feeling that after Ben discovered the truth about Vader and that he had been lied to, he lashed out and destroyed Luke's temple and students. Snoke had been manipulating Ben from behind the scenes without him knowing and then, as Ben runs away from his crimes, Snoke "finds" him and takes him under his wing properly. But up to this point, Snoke has been quiet. And I have a suspicion that the Dark Side wasn't there for him until Ben awakened it - and only then could he emerge. Now for Luke, the Force as been quieted to him (the light side). And so this is why he goes searching for the FJT - he wants to find out what has happened. But when he's there, he doesn't really find any answers - that is until Rey awakens the Force & then arrives on Ahch-To. But even then, Luke isn't content because he sees in Rey exactly what he saw in Ben and thinks that training her could "make matters worse" and he doubts his own ability to see the Dark Side in her as he failed to do so with Ben (http://ew.com/movies/2017/08/09/star-wars-last-jedi-rey-luke-skywalker-daisy-ridley-mark-hamill/).
