Um... I'm going to go ahead and bump this.
I'm not actually sure where "bumped" posts go, but hopefully it's somewhere visible.

How could you have written this over a year ago?
Wait- is this some kind of force projection, time traveling trick too?

    I'm so confused...

nope, no force draining on Luke, but he died of exhaustion with this force projection thing. So that he is not around to overshadow Rey.

Maybe I read it from a different point of view... a far less specific one.

For me, the relevance of this post has less to do with Snoke (or any other single character) than with tying the general concept of being drained (exhausted) to this movie.

I don't think anybody was pulling Luke's strings- his brief trip to the dark side seemed quite voluntary.
I'm just not sure that matters.

Luke had to call on a source other than "the light" (force) to save his friends this time.

"Luke's Force", that of a Jedi, circulates energy through all living things... it does not drain, it provides.

With or without direct involvement, it was a Sith practice that drained him, and that's why he died.

    Ha!

I always felt that when we meet Luke he’d have to be disconnected from the Force. I assumed this would’ve been inflicted by Snoke. Turns out Luke cut himself off from it, which is a far better approach than my idea.

Luke couldn’t be the hero that we last saw in ROTJ else there would be no need for Rey.

(Oops- I meant this in response to the previous post by Master Shaitan, but failed with the Reply button)

For reasons which have been mentioned or otherwise, do you believe that Luke's character requires any form of redemption before it will be possible for him to achieve the purpose for which he was intended?

I obviously have a few thoughts on the subject to have asked such a specific question, but haven't landed on an answer which feels right yet.

I'd really like to hear your thoughts.

The way I see it, Luke fulfilled his purpose when he redeemed his father. It could be said that his next purpose was to create a new Jedi order but Yoda clarifies this - he just needed to pass on what he had learned. And he did that - not through training Rey but by the mistakes he made as well as his final sacrifice.

So in my view, if Luke did need redemption for his failures, he found it in TLJ when he gave his life ensuring that what he knew was passed on and that the Jedi didn’t in fact, die...
