I've been wondering on this for awhile. Dude is quite nonplussed about the implosion of the planet. Captain Phasma's alltooeasy surrender made me think she had orders. From Snoke, of course, but why would want the 1st Order's new toy blown up?

A plausible reason comes from a video by Generation Tech:

Basically he puts forth that Star killer Base was made from Legends planet Illum, in the unkown regions where ancient Jedi got their kyber crystals. It featured Jedi temple, and was considered very sacred to them. Snoke not only wiped out the New Republic's homeworld, but he forced them, in turn, to destroy this sacred Jedi planet. Maybe Snoke has a big grudge against the Jedi from those ancient Illum times and was hijacking the First Order to get back at them.

Ilum is canon. It appeared in the fifth season of TCW. It served as one of the main sources of Kyber crystals for the Jedi Order.

And I thought it was pretty well known at this point that Ilum became Starkiller?
