After searching this sub-forum for any signs of this topic and having found none, behold! The Diego Luna in Rogue One topic. I thought we could open a discussion regarding the actors possible role in the movie, if he's playing a pre-existing character or a completely new one. Have at it people.

There have been rumors online, saying he might be playing Biggs Darklighter, mostly because of his appearence, there is no concrete evidence to support this. I find that hard to believe, what do you guys think?

Regardless of his character, I have been a fan of Diego Luna for a while now, specially the movies he's made with his friend Gael, I find him a very good actor!

I definitely think it's possible. To me, the real question comes down to how much time passes in ANH (and in ESB too! If Luke was training for a couple of days to a couple of weeks, that's believable. Hours? That's prodigious). If ANH takes place over a couple of weeks or if Biggs left a couple of years before ANH, then they could (and dare I say should...?) go for it.

There was a deleted scene in ANH with Biggs and Luke talking, with the Star Destroyer already on Tatooine if I'm not mistaken. Biggs is saying he is going to jump shift and join the rebellion, but by that time the Death Star plans had already been stolen. Now it is a deleted scene so it doesn't count much.

    It's at 2.39

I really don't see that much of a resemblance...it's just two dudes with mustaches. When you factor in the fact that Diego Luna is not a native English speaker and likely doesn't sound anything at all like whomever dubbed Garrick Hagon, and the fact that Biggs was barely in the Rebellion longer than Luke Skywalker was, it just seems like one of those knee-jerk things that comes up because people are used to everyone being related to everyone else in TGFFA. I hope we get a new, badass character for Luna to play.

I'm calling it now. Diego Luna's character bears the surname Dameron.

I think it would be cool to connect things in that way. It will give us a larger frame of reference in regards to Biggs.

Whatever role he ends up playing I am glad they chose him. Diego is such a talented actor.

His origins are pretty interesting, he started acting in Mexican soap operas when he was a boy. Not to disrespect him, but being an actor in Mexico implies at any point to do "telenovelas" in order to keep yourself in the loop. Actually when he started acting in Hollywood and hanging out with the likes of Sean Penn and such, his dad (a well-respected theater plays scenographer) told him that if he started acting cocky or showing off, there were videos like this in Youtube to show where he started from lol. (that is one of the early soap-operas - a very silly one - he acted on). LOL.

On the contrary. "George Lucas Canon", which IMHO is still relevant for the OT, clearly said that deleted scenes from the film (or the information we can conclude from these) and in screenplays still reflect creator intentions and therefore are canon, too, unless these contradict events in the actual films.

The entire Anchorhead scene revolving around Luke and Biggs wasn't originally cut for canon reasons, instead the omission was entirely owed to the fact, that the inclusion of the scene would have slowed down the pace of the film. Many fans are aware of this and therefore accept the scene as canon, and in good faith I should add.

To have Diego Luna play the character of Biggs would, of course, raise a couple of questions. It would then look that he was lying (he did not just return to say good-bye) and actually returned to recruit pilots for the Alliance (one of the Alliance's problems used to be the shortage of good pilots).

While I really wouldn't like such a revision, rewatching the Anchorhead scene could suggest that. It's pretty obvious that he tries to persuade Luke to join him, but IMHO he doesn't put too much heart into it (i.e. he is not a really good recruiter). He tells Luke he'll still be on Tatooine til the next morning, but I think it becomes obvious that Luke will not answer Biggs call.

I never got the feeling that Biggs was trying to get Luke to follow him into the Rebellion. The issue seemed to be about when (or if) Luke was finally going to go to the Academy. After all, Biggs was part of a freighter crew, and was planning on jumping ship and joining the Alliance with some of his crewmates. What was Luke going to do, stow away in the john? ;)

IMHO, it would create major continuity problems to have Biggs be part of the Rebel mission to steal the Death Star plans, and then turn around and have him come back to Tatooine as though he were fresh from the Academy and still looking to join the Rebellion. (Assuming, of course, that LFL still considers the deleted scenes to be part of the "All New Super Happy Fun-Time Canon", natch!)

I think the new Disney/LFL probably views the deleted scenes the way most of us do: as scenes that were cut from the film. Therefore, not being part of the actual movie, nobody cares if the deleted scenes are left non-canonized.
