I figured I would open a thread for this so that we could open up a lively Cantina conversation considering the news on the sw7n site:

    http://www.starwars7news.com/2015/05/disney-infinity-3-0-to-introduce-star-wars-characters.html

I realise, mostly from the comments on sw7n, that this has been met with considerable distaste from a few people, but I imagine others, like me, will see this as a potentially interesting medium for Star Wars.

It won't be the gritty RPG we're waiting for to replace our anticipation for 1313 or the Battlefront we actually asked for with space battles and clone wars, but that doesn't mean it won't be good fun! I played through a bit of the first Infinity game and it does make for some good fun and isn't worlds apart from the likes of the LEGO games.

What does everyone think of this and what would you like to see in terms of characters, gameplay, missions, etc.?

I'm absolutely extatic! My wife and I play the first two games and they are a ton of fun, 2.0 especially. I am not ashamed to say that this is on my list of games to get this year. And you are correct they are very much like the Lego Games.

I am pumped for this news! Though the past two Disney Infinity iterations are focused on kids (with good reason), they also offer a lot of simple fun for older gamers. The real draw is the Toybox mode, which is essentially a level/game creator that has crazy potential since the 2.0 version.

Anyway, it seems like this first image is of a Starter Pack variant focused on the Clone Wars. However, after more examination of the Playset piece (clear crystal like object), that is clearly showing the Jedi symbol with two lightsabers behind it. What if instead of playsets centered around various Star Wars eras (i.e. Clone Wars, Rebels, OT), we get them focused around themes, much like Fantasy Flight Games treats the property. This is what I'm thinking for playsets:

The Force (features characters that use the force - Jedi VS Sith)
Scum and Villiany (features the scoundrels and underworld aspects - Han Solo, Chewie, Boba Fett, etc.)
Rebel vs Empire (features the military asepect).

Or they could go the simple route and do a playset for Clone Wars, Rebels, and The Force Awakens post December. I am good with either direction.

Has everyone seen the trailer and the extra details from SW7N? Looks like there's a good range of locations, although given the style of moving between missions in the first game (I haven't played the second, so maybe they've changed this) I'm not entirely sure how one will go between these locations.

Another concern I've just come to is that of lightsaber duels. So many games get these horrifically wrong or they just lack that connection of the blades, so I'm hoping they've done something with this. I'm praying that it's not just a keep-hitting-them-until-their-health-drops style like in Battlefront 2. The Lego games did an alright job though.

The guy making the game has said that there will be over 100 playable characters across the three games by the time 3.0's shelf-life ends. So as it stands, that includes these 91 figures:
So that leaves at least 9 more characters to fill in the remaining slots. My guesses are the following:
    • Kanan Jarrus
    • Ezra Bridger
    • Sabine Wren
    • Hera Syndulla
    • Zeb Orrelios
    • Finn
    • Rey
    • Poe Dameron
    • Kylo Ren
    • Quicksilver
    • Scarlet Witch
    • The Vision
    • Ant-Man
...Along with a few extra representatives thrown in.

In case anyone wasn't watching the Sony E3 conference, it was announced that Boba Fett would be exclusive to the special Playstation Starter pack that includes early access to the Rise Against the Empire playset and Boba Fett. This is definitely the one I'm going with.

    So according to this thing...

There are 9 more Star Wars characters, 4 more Marvel Comics characters, and 19 more Disney characters to add to the roster. At least 5-6 of the Star Wars figures will be related to The Force Awakens.

We are excited about the SW and InsideOut stuff in our house. My kids have already made it clear that I will be sinking another $200 or more into that money pit with v3.0 coming out.

It occurred to me the other day when my daughters had all of their many Infinity figures set out on the table that we own less than a fifth of the total possible figures and if one was to purchase all of the available figures at full price, it would cost well over $1000! (91 @ 13.99 each) That is not counting three versions of the game and all of power disc. That thing is a cash cow, and while they have fun and I like playing it with them, it isn't that great.

I would have liked a massively detailed open world (perhaps a recreation of WDW) with lots of mini-games like a kids version of GTA series, with each figure unlocking new missions/boards.

I'm sure that 30+ year olds aren't the target demographic for Disney Infinity, but seriously - the marketing job for the game as a whole has been immensely successful. You buy a base game, then have to splash extra cash on additional playsets and associated characters (the latter being particularly necessary if you want to unlock all the content in a given playset)... and yet no one cries "foul" at the cost. Then something like Battlefront is released and players are up in arms about the season pass/DLC costs!

That aside, the Infinity platform is immensely fun and just as easy to sink time into whether you're aged 6 or 36 - the fact that there's now a Star Wars version (for those of not so mesmerised by more the traditional Disney characters, the Pixar movies, Pirates of the Caribbean or Marvel) just makes it even more appealing.
