SPECULATION Disney Shifting to tough female leads?

I blame Elsa.

 

Disney wants to market these films to young girls as much as they want to market it to young boys. It's an entire demographic that traditionally is not being reached by these movies. Create a strong female lead or female character then you can market that character to them.

 

I think Kathleen Kennedy has a strong voice in that of female leads for these films, she does run Lucasfilm now.

 

Frankly, I just think that Felicity Jones was a terrific actor. Not many people come away almost winning an Oscar, and look that good in their movies too! She has both maturity and beauty, and I think having her not just fit in but lead the crew will actually be very entertaining. And as a man, it's about time women got their due! They aren't sidekicks anymore - we live in a world where Korra, from a kids TV show, was a great lead that boys enjoyed, and later turned out to be bisexual! Ronda Rousey is a major star with her ridiculous strength and skill! Women run companies like HP and Yahoo! The world still has women who turn to men, but now I think all of the world is realizing that's not always the case.

 

Preach! It amazes me that in this day and age, some people are still unable to process the fact that half the population is female. They also have lives and those lives are equally likely to be interesting.

 

Princess Leia was not a strong female lead?

Sure, there was the slave bikini scene. But aside from that, I can't think of a better example at an earlier point in filmmaking than the OT of a female character who was defined by her strength and grit rather than her external beauty. (Because, while Leia isn't ugly, she isn't exactly SI Swimsuit Edition.)

SW was way ahead of its time with Princess Leia. She may not have been THE main character, but she was still hugely prominent and a big step forward for female characters in films.

Whoever they decide to go with as the lead, I just hope the character is strong. We don't need repeat of how Anakin was handled in the Prequels. And frankly, given how awesome Satele Shan was in TOR, I am totally cool with a super agile female Ataru Ninja type of Jedi flipping around and slashing up Ren Knights with a saber staff.

There is no doubt about that, and she has made it very clear that this is an agenda of hers- and it may have gone to the point of being a directive to JJ and Kasdan from her to write the new hero as a female. And it's probably very politically motivated. Let's just call a spade a spade.

And honestly, I couldn't give two cents if that is the case, just as I get good films and stories out of it.
