OFFICAL: movieweb.com and other sources have reported that Disney+ will launch with every Star Wars movie - with the exception of TLJ and Solo. (view the article here)

What do you think Disney's intentions were behind this decision? Do you think they are hoping people will purchase TLJ and Solo on their own to profit more from sales of these films leading up to TROS rather than opting to stream via Disney+?

Or could it be due to the negative impact both of these recent Star Wars films have had in the media for various reasons? (from production to reception)

    What are your thoughts?

Netflix. Those movies are still on there (in Canada anyway) and there is likely an exclusivity contract of some kind that prevents them from putting it on Disney+ until that contract is fulfilled

It's more than likely a licensing issue. If I'm not mistaken, im pretty sure TLJ and Solo are still showing on Netflix and their waiting for the contract to end since they just can't pull it away from Netflix. You also forgot to mention that there are several Marvel movies are missing from the launch as well.

Common sense would suggest licensing issues.

But this is the internet so I guess we have no choice but to riot and burn everything to the ground.

Neither. Read the official website please before reading clickbait:
"During the first year of service launch in the US, Star Wars: The Last Jedi, Solo: A Star Wars Story, and Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker will become available. Coming to Disney+ in February 2020 is the long-awaited conclusion of the beloved animated series Star Wars: The Clone Wars, with 12 new episodes helmed by series shepherd Dave Filoni. A Cassian Andor live-action series starring Diego Luna (reprising his Rogue One role) is in the works for Disney+, and just announced at D23 Expo 2019, an Obi-Wan Kenobi series starring Ewan McGregor is planned for the service."

As the licensing issues seem to be the obvious factor, you would think they would have prepared for this leading up to the release of the next Star Wars film, as they have done in the past, and as they have done with the Marvel films.

Netflix has paid to have them on their line up. Disney wouldn't be able to put them up due to taking away from Netflix's contract. Once it is up, they can put them on Disney+ without taking money away from Netflix. Just my thoughts.

Slow news day at SWNN as we await the trailer huh??

Solo,TLJ and previously TFA were signed to Netflix at least here in Australia before Disney+.
It's a licensing thing and once finished they will revert back to Disney+.

Really looking forward to THAT NEW TROS trailer and tv spots leading up to it this week!!!

TLJ is still showing in Netflix, at least here in Europe. That's the reason.

And there is no negative impact on both movies. A part of the fans didn't like them but its not the majority.

Personally I’m more concerned that Disney+ will launch without making it possible to have me as a customer, but that’s the way they wanted it unfortunately. I would have liked to have watched The Mandalorian and Resistance before TRoS, as ‘designed’, but ultimately it doesn’t dampen my excitement for Ep IX in the slightest.

Honestly I think the amount of people who haven’t seen Solo or TLJ and would have watched them on Disney+ who also don’t have Netflix or any other means to watch them must be pretty tiny. So I think the answer is it won’t affect TRoS very much at all, IMHO.

Region locks are the worst. I assumed that we in Europe would get to see the Mandalorian in november as well, but I couldn't even find an estimate for when it launches in Norway. But I agree, it will probably not affect TROS at all.

What do you mean? Obviously they are licensed to Netflix for the time being. I think they even said that films which are licensed out will come to Disney+ once those agreements run out. That's all this is. No biggie.

As for the thread title: it will have absolutely no effect on TROS.

For everybody saying those films are license by Netflix, yes they are, but Disney obviously knew TROS would be coming out at the time that decision was made. Why didn't they agree on a term that would allow the films (especially TLJ) to be available on their new platform prior to the final Star Wars saga film?

I don't believe they were caught off guard and said "Oh yeah, we have a new Star Wars film coming out, we forgot all about it. Aw shucks."

From a marketing standpoint I would think they would be promoting TLJ and building up the hype to TROS.

Could it be that Disney wants to keep TLJ distant because of the ire of fans who hated the movie (I am not one of them) before TROS comes out? This could explain why thwy licensed it to Netflix, so as to keep TLJ far from their launch of Disney+.

But with that logic, why are there so may Marvel films missing from the list as well? There's like 16 Marvel movies missing. Tarzan is missing, The Mighty Ducks (which is a fav film of mine) and tons other movies. Sorry, I don't find your argument believable based on other missing content.

This is so backwards and couldn't be farther from the truth.

"The simplest explanation is usually the right one"..... keep your tin foil on your leftovers where it belongs, everybody, and off your heads.
