I had no idea that this was happening behind the scenes. Looks like there could be another war brewing, in a galaxy not so far away

Hmmm, dunno about this. We may not have all the details. For instance, according to this Deadline article, there is no unanimously binding agreement about exhibition terms and I'm assuming that's what this whole thing is called. This would indicate that there are times when a big production company can demand things from theaters. My first statement about not having all the details is regarding the question about smaller theater owners. Is there anything in these requirements in which Disney recognizes this problem and is lenient with smaller theater owners or did they simply make a general demand which was designed to address the larger theater chains?

I've read about this a few days ago. They kind of are laying down some rules. Not sure all will participate, but I was thinking they did the same with TFA too.

I’ve read several articles about this and the result will be that smaller theaters will probably pass on TLJ. The Multiplexes are the ones that can handle these demands.

I think it all depends on where you live as I worry about the rural areas who don’t have big multiplexes. I live in an area with various big and small theaters so it won’t effect me much, but I feel for the little guy.

George did it too when it was his thing. He would only let the Prequels and Special Editions play in THX approved cinemas which had the correct surround sound and screen format setups. He wanted his films to be seen in the best possible way for the audience and fans.

George's requirements were about quality and performance. Disney's are purely about profit.

I guess it's Disney's prerogative to over-inflate the cost of a highly valuable commodity, but they have/are going to make crazy money from the SW franchise, why constantly screw the little guys? It all just seems so unnecessarily greedy, but that's capitalism sometimes.

I say bring back the days of studio owned theaters. Not having 2 split profits w/ another "greedy company" should mean lower ticket prices 4 us.

I think disney certainly has a right to assert itself in this matter. Other distributors do the same. But because its Star Wars we notice.

There are some chains that are griping about this, but the terms themselves are fairly similar to the same ones that were applied to The Force Awakens and Rogue One (I think those were both 64% instead of 65%). I can completely agree with smaller chains having concerns, but the fact of the matter is that those kinds of theaters are on the way out while multiplexes are better-suited for this sort of thing.

I think that the best thing the smaller chains could do would be to bite the bullet for Disney's demands - have a few less-active days at the box office early next year in exchange for a packed two-and-a-half weeks during the Holidays. The concession sales alone will keep you afloat.

John Campea said that Lucasfilm got 100% of the first week of TPM.

I've also heard this piece of info a couple years ago, but I don't remember it's source.

I heard a variety of things regarding the OW distribution deals of the PT movies, but I think they're suspicious and likely inaccurate - or, at the very least, misleading. The fact of the matter is that those movies were released over a decade ago in a much different box office environment - back when you could actually go to stores to rent something or when Netflix was just a delivery service. I think it's an apples-to-oranges comparison and should be treated as such.
