James Cameron is not the be all and end all decider of quality films. He is a good film maker, but Avatar was a rip off of Dances With Wolves and a rehash of his usual themes.

He can dislike TFA all he wants, but his opinion is no more valid than yours or mine on that film.

And of course Lucas was motivated by money. Was it the ONLY motivator? No, of course not.

    @RoyleRancor

The full truth of the matter is if you throw that term around in broad strokes then you could technically call any work of fiction fan made. At the end of the day what author/writer wasn't a fan of their own work?

So the point isn't particularly valid. Calling the TFA a fan made movie is nonsense. It was made to satisfy fans to a certain degree but it is not a fan made movie.

And I don't think that was the point. I think the point is to show the silliness in using that term.
You can't call one thing this but not the other.

Fan films are very specific amateurish style films.

I am pretty sure he's trying to highlight the similarities between George and James as film makers who seem to, at times, care less about the actual end product but care more about things like pushing technology and being "different" over making good films with good writing, direction and all that "boring" stuff. Not trying to imply that Cameron's opinion is actually any more valid than any one else's

You're right, sadly it did work. The fact that people actually think Episode 7 NEEDED to be a mix tape of everything we've already seen and tell such an exact same story as George and friends already nailed is madness! Your argument is weak that they NEEDED to soft reboot the franchise. ALL of the OT loving PT haters would have gone to see this film just to see Luke, Leia and Han one more time and younger fans that like . They didn't NEED to reboot anything and in fact, because of these 'fans' like you, many of the new fans are quite confused as to why they are seeing a reboot in episode 7 after watching 1-6 for the first time. The 'fans' that think we needed EVERYTHING back from the OT (Ships, Planets, Enemies, Death Stars, Plot, Story) are the reason we got a turtle sh*t shell of an episode. lol If you want to just forget about the old films and focus on episodes 7-9 then I could see it being okay to reboot it, but 4, 5 and 6 are still and always will be really good so it's tough seeing a film in the same linear episodic Saga be such a reboot. I'm sorry. jeez. haha

The fact Ep7 worked and the PT didn't effectively puts an end to your argument as far as I'm concerned. If Ep7 had been done in the same vein as the PT it would have bombed. I don't see how your argument disputes that? Regardless of creativity, ingenuity or divine intervention the film would still have been a massive steaming pile of phantom menace.

Star Wars needs more brothels. Lots more brothels. Tons and tons of GFFA brothels. The PT sucks because of an obvious lack of brothels. The OT sucks for the same lack. Bring on the ST brothels!!!

    Just my two cents, yo.

the pt worked too otherwise TPM wouldn't have made a billion in 99 and also made a whole new generation of kids fans of the franchise.

    I see your point.
A Disney movie is a product.
Like most of the commercial movies.
Star Wars is not an artsy piece of cinema... it's popcorn movie that started as an indie (Like most of the popular products).
I think Star Wars is healthy enough not having to play that game... and seriously, a Rian Johnson would have jump off the boat.

If TLJ would have been written by fanboys... Luke would have kicked everyone asses in TFA and in TLJ.
I think signs show that it goes into a very personal territory (RJ) for TLJ.
