My first theory is that Rey is Luke's child.. and that her mother was also a Jedi. This would a) explain why her force sensitivity (or midiclorian count :p) is obviously so high and b) it would explain why she's so fundamentally good with melee combat. If the prequels were treated as canon (as they should be) then Luke probably would have started training Rey way before she was left on Jakku.

My other theory is that Rey is not related to Luke.. and she is the "another" that Yoda sensed in Empire Strikes Back. It wasn't Leia.

Yoda could vaguely see the future in his force visions, and if Anakin truly was miraculously concieved then we can assume that Rey may have been too. Perhaps the force "wills" these children to be born every one or two generations who are uber sensitive.. and wherether she came from in this case, she was either treated like a freak and left on Jakku instead of being killed... OR Luke left her there after training to protect her after his failure with Kylo Ren. And PERHAPS her memory was wiped somehow, but maybe not.

now about the long stare at the end of the film:

Rey heard many stories about Luke Skywalker, but (like the Falcon and Han) didn't know what Luke looked like. What if at the end of the movie.. she suddenly recognises her own father when he drops the hood? And he recognises his daughter? Both are literally staring at each other like "What the ****?" so Luke may have had a huge reality check and now believes that Rey was MEANT to be a jedi. This may be what is going through his head. He tried to get rid of her but the force willed her back.

Anyway, any other theories or better versions of mine? Great movie

    Rid *

What if Rey is a clone of Luke Sjywalker, like Boba Fett and Jango Fett, and Rey was his contingency plan in case something ever happens to him . That could easily explain why Rey was sent to Jakku with Unkar Plutt BEFORE KR and The KOR destroyed the "academy ."

There's plenty of other reasons why I'm back and forth on "Rey is Luke's daughter"

But theres solid evidence we can go by to debunk the theory

JJ's comments about the roles of Rey and Finn not being race specific, was the truth. It wasn't misdirection or anything of the sorts.

Maisie Richardson Sellers almost had the part of Rey (The main female lead) before Daisy Ridley nailed it.

Chiwetel Ejiofor was rumored to be up for General Hux early on

Jessie Plemons and John Boyega were both fighting for the role of Finn.

But race would only really matter if she was a Solo, which she clearly isn't. If she's Luke's daughter, her mother could be of any race.

That being said, I'm still not convinced she's Luke's daughter. The fact Han and Leia don't know anything about her and specially Maz's line: "whomever you are waiting for (i.e. your family) is not coming back, but there is someone who still can (i.e. Luke)", therefore Luke and her family are two separate entities.

I like how they went with someone unexpected like John Boyega but I liked Jessie Plemons's look better...until I saw a recent picture of him in some new tv show and he looked chubby and very odd...now I think that John would have been better the entire time lol .

I really, really liked that Rey line in the trailers "I'm no one"

Would be very good to drop the "Chosen Ones" and the "Holy Bloodlines" once and for all, this is just entertinment don't try to make it much more than that.
(in my humble opinion George Lucas fail on the approach to the prequels started by trying to make something more of it than just a movie, a really good movie with a great story).

Rey should actually be a NO ONE, but i believe she was raised and trained by Luke Skywalker when she was very young, for what we have seen she might be hipnotised/trained earlier, but her family should better be left out of the picture in terms of movie plot, it doesn't matter she could be anyone's daughter.

I've seen, read and heard nothing that would suggest that there is blood connection between Luke and Rey. It's quite possible it's being left quite ambiguous or open in order for Rian Johnson to decide if it's necessary or not for the story.
Based on what we saw in TFA and what we see in films, one would be more inclined to think that she's not related to Luke.

It is still very possible she is a Solo. Whoever she is Han, Leia, and Ren all had an idea. I think Han and Leia want to keep it a secret who she is seeing as the new Dark Siders seem be practiced in pulling secrets out of people's heads . . . not unlike how Vader sensed Luke's fear for Leia. The less Rey knows the safer she is in this view. When Han meets her he gives lots of knowing looks and offers her a job. Maz knows Han knows something and asks. Ren is annoyed they lost the robot but when the poor messenger tells him that a girl was with them he flies out of control. Like the idea of a girl from Jakku is upsetting.

I think Rey could still be Ren's young sister and he took steps to leave her on Jakku for her own good. Han suspects truth but can't bring himself to say it or worries what the result will be but dies before he can share it. I think the sibling dynamic is powerful. I think the chasm that ended the duel and the parallel opposition from the poster are suggesting that they both are Anakin's legacy.

The other options are some sort of relation to Palpatine. Which might be intriguing as she would be seen as a possible "heir" and be a path to peace between the republic and the 1st Order.

She could be related to know one in particular. Jedi can come from anywhere its not all genetics and family trees. Kasdan and Lucas when the worked on ESB talked about the fact that any one can use the force but not everyone cultivates the skill. Ironically Kasdan thought it should be more unique, then Lucas introduced the mitoclorians and made Vader the chosen one. Perhaps they have switched places and Rey is just another hero.

It is possible Luke has a daughter but that seems out of place to me. Jedi aren't supposed to just because some fans think that unpopular doesn't really change that. Second restarting the Jedi not starting family was Luke's purpose he had a pretty weighty mandate. Lastly Luke is far and away the fan favorite. Not seeing his romance and not getting the story in a film (not sure an anthology is the way to go) is too big a missed opportunity. It would change things from the story we knew before continuing to Luke completely changed and we don't know how.

Decendant of Kenobi is a fun possibility either a child or other relative. Perhaps Rey is a grand child of Obi and Satine. I think that Sabine on Rebels is . . . though I don't see Rey as Sabine and Ezra's daughter.

Not even Daisy and John knew who their characters were this time last month. They said it one of the extended interviews. I don't think J.J. knows either lol.. so you're probably right. The bulk of this story will be down to Rian who I believe is also doing the screenplay for episode 9?

In the First 6 Star Wars Movies we saw the story of Darth Vader, this trilogy will end the story of Luke Skywalker.

I would prefer to watch a brand new story for our Star Wars Universe, at least the Cannon Universe, with new characters and new places, bringing new heroes and new villains.

We should discover new characters in the Star Wars Universe, the goodie to any SW Fan is knowing what happened to our beloved characters from the old day, where's Lando Calrissian?, but let them remain in the old day and out of the action. Not all the characters in Star Wars should be related, this ain't Hawaii and they aren't all cousins.

Just got one secret wish for this trilogy, bring back Emperor Palpatine, i mean, i know they can't bring back Darth Vader cause it will ruin all the plot of the previous movies but give Palpatine a decent last word or evil do, he could secretely orquestrated the rising of the New Order with a secret agenda or something else.

I don't hate the idea of dropping the concept of Holy Bloodlines at all (I think she would end up being a Chosen One one way or the other if the Force was calling to her and awakens in her). Even though I would like Rey to be Luke's daughter simply because I love both characters, I can see the benefits of "Rey is/was no one" approach and, like you, I love that line.

However, I would be really upset/pissed if they make all this mystery about who her family is and then they end up being irrelevant to the story. It's not like what they did with Finn: we learn he was taken from his family but there is no mystery surrounding it. The viewer wonders who his family is just because we like the character, not because the plot makes a big deal out of it. Meanwhile with Rey, they could have shown her family leaving (even if only their backs), they could have shown some voice telling her they would come back for her (like in the book), they could have chosen a different backstory for her if the only goal was to make her a loner who is trapped in Jakku. Lots of little things that create this whole mystery of who left her there on Jakku were deliberate. If the next movies forget all about that I will be very disappointed.

Yeah people misunderstood that line. Maz knew Finn just wanted to run, so it was up to Rey to bring the droid back to the Resistance to help find Luke. She just wanted to go back to Jakku to wait for her family, but she had to move on, and if she did she had a chance to bring Luke Skywalker back. That's what I think Maz meant.

Going by the visual guide, she wasn't abandoned by whole family ''mother and father'' but someone.
    No other clues whatsoever...

Yeah. And i am still bugged by the line rey says to BB8:
"Classified - really? Me too. Big secret."
It would be one of the few, if any, possible misdirects in the film.
One could say that Rey is just giving BB8 a hard time for taking his mission so seriously.

Kind of like when Andy Dufraine comes to Shawshank prison and tells the other inmates that he is innocent.
They respond, "haven't you heard? We're all innocent."
Similar line, i think. Rey finding a common ground with BB8, and poking a bit of fun...

Yes, one of the first things I noticed is that at no point during the movie Rey or anybody else mentions a father, mother or other specific relative. The only word she ever uses is "family" which is very vague and could mean anything from a parent, an uncle to a sibling or grandparent.

It's possible they were being vague on purpose because it's part of the reveal but now I think it's also possible they were being vague so they could later on make us see that Rey has found a new family in Finn and the others.

whilst i agree that perhaps the 'royal bloodline' may seem overdone, star wars is, at its heart, a story about the skywalker family and their interactions with the galaxy. to completely drop the skywalker last name would be not a wise move. and, personally, i think rey being a skywalker makes a lot of sense, not only in the context of the scenes of the film, but thematically and structurally. rey being luke's daughter makes far too much sense for the theory to be dismissed.

also, it's important to note that if you all want a story about a 'no one' becoming a 'someone', rey's (and finn's!) can still be that. there's more to finding out about your identity and place in the world than just discovering your blood relatives. rey reconnecting with her father, and the rest of her family, would still be an incredibly powerful storyline.

Why? It was just her having a friendly/funny conversation with a droid.
As we have scarce information, people are picking every straw.

Normally I would have agreed with you that we should not read too much into the line.

I think that Rey says the line in jest. She is teasing BB-8 and she does not know why her family left her behind.

However, her Force vision suggests that she has been left on Jakku for a special reason.

I have difficulties coming up with good reasons to explain why her family would leave her behind.

For me, the only good reason to leave your child behind is that your presence is a direct danger to the child.

Honestly all questions & theories aside I think the emotional impact of the end of TFA only makes sense if Rey is Luke's daughter.
Questions are gonna be brought up, but they aren't things that can't be addressed relatively quickly in canon, and it's not like her being a Solo/Kenobi/Random wouldn't bring up just as many questions (and the answers would be far more convoluted).
