  2. Yes, but a director shouldn't have to make a movie that long to tell their story

Movies have, in general, gotten longer over time. For instance, you have stuff that predates the idea of a "feature film" such as A Trip to the Moon, that can be be as long as 20-30 minutes, and even sometimes as short as just a few seconds.

Then, feature films came out, and in 1930 the average feature film was about 90 minutes. Features films were an event! Instead of going to the theater to see a few experiential type things, or a short film, now people could actually make a night out of going to see something longer than an hour!

Over time, that steadily increased (at times dipping back down a bit) and now the idea of a 90 minute film actually sounds pretty short. In fact, over the past decade, the average length of a film has gone to just under two hours to just over 130 minutes.

But it seems even that isn't enough for directors to tell the stories that they want to tell. Take Zack Snyder's Batman v Superman- a heavily panned movie. At 162 minutes, it's hardly a short movie, but apparently the 30+ minutes of added content actually do improve on the film, even if they don't make it as great as a movie about Batman fighting Superman should have been.

Now, the reason I posted this here is of course in respect to Rian Johnson's cut of The Last Jedi. Personally, I did enjoy the film, but I do understand some criticisms of it.

Johnson has said that there are a significant amount of deleted scenes, though. Now, we can't say for sure, of course, but maybe these scenes could have significantly increased the quality of The Last Jedi, as well?

I'm curious what people here thing- would you go see a Star Wars movie if it was over 3 hours long if that meant that the story was being told as effectively and enjoyably as possible? Or would you prefer for sacrifices to be made to the story to make it shorter?

Yes but they need to evolve to exactly the way I want them to.
