Do people really consider the stuff canon?

So that's your line in the sand, and that's fine. It's certainly not a universal standard, though.

But that doesn't mean anything to people who haven't seen Rebels. It's just another ship, unless you're willing to go into the ancillary stuff to learn more about it.

This is pretty much how I feel.

I kind of disagree. If I'm having a conversation about one of the movies and someone comes back at me with a tidbit about one of the side projects, and expects that to be some kind of universally accepted truth, I don't think that's being realistic. if you watch the movies, there's no way Darth Maul and his nonexistent brother are running around causing trouble, but are absent from all the main events of episodes two and three. why? Because he died in episode one in his inclusion in the cartoons was not very well thought out.

I still think it is astounding that Lucas subverted his prequel movies even further by resurrecting Maul and giving Anakin an apprentice. It is just as silly as in ROTJ Yoda saying to Luke "the last of the Jedi you will be" and then allowing the Post-ROTJ expanded universe writers to come up with a dozen of other Jedi who survived the purge. Or bringing back the Emperor 12 TIMES after Vader had tossed him in the space bin in the finale of ROTJ.

The Clone Wars TV series can be enjoyable, but it is an all essence an emblematic project of the inconsistent EU we had before Disney bought Lucasfilm. The story group is now discovering how restrictive it is for writers to plan everything out and iron out inconsistancies. It isn't necessary, but they try to do it anyways. We're in incredible luck that the new movies actually have a complete carte blanche when it comes to storytelling (for instance Poe meeting Rey for the first time on the Falcon in TLJ, whereas the TFA novelization had showed them in an earlier meeting on D'Qar).

I get that you don't personally enjoy it, but you do realize that you're arguing that ignoring canon is a universal truth? I'm sorry, but that's... just kind of backward and bizarre. Maybe it's fair to say "most people think Maul died", but I've found "most people" are periodically poorly informed on some topics.

I think there's some complexity when discussing Star Wars canon. Maybe during discussions, parameters need to be set- "we're talking Legends canon specifically", or "we're only considering stuff that happened in the saga films and the two spinoffs".

And I don't think we should hold everyone to accepting canon as representative of Star Wars, despite the fact that at its core it is definitive Star Wars. The series means a lot to people, and I'm sure everyone has their own interpretation.

But honestly, if someone that I know mentioned that they thought it a shame that Anakin never had a padawan, and I told them about Ahsoka, and then they made some remark that it didn't count for some reason, you could probably see my eyes roll from the International Space Station.

You know Star Wars isn't real right? They're all stories. You can have whatever head canon you like and George can have whatever canon he likes but Lucasfilm say these stories are official canon so they are canon. Don't like em? Ignore them, because none of it is real. If I was choosing my own canon The Phantom Menace would be the first thing on the scrap heap.

Personally I love the Force lore behind TCW and Rebels and Ashoka is my favourite character that isn't one of the main movie characters. In fact TCW rehabilitated the prequels a bit for me. Clones and Sith anyway. TPM can get in the sea.

Neither of these things are subversions. They don't contradict anything in the prequels. Jedi Rocks and Nooooo in RoTJ are subversions.

I actually feel like some of my brain cells died reading this thread. It's the dumbest thing I've seen outside of Star Wars Discussion Room Facebook group. If you don't like it just say you don't like it.

I didn't like it. For me, it was subverting. But that doesn't mean I couldn't enjoy those characters as portrayed in the Clone Wars and I believe that in the narrative space of the Clone Wars tv series they made sense. But if you want to obliterate TPM from memory, resurrecting Maul would make sense.....I guess. :p

Ahsoka is a tremendously cool character. But you must remember. I was reading a lot of books and comics in between AOTC and ROTS. Those were very well written and sketched a quite interesting relationship between Anakin and Obi Wan which tied in excellently into Anakin's turn in ROTS. Suddenly finding out that Anakin had an apprentice retrospectively when the Clone Wars hit theatres was quite a shock, especially because it took some years for Lucasfilm to confirm that anything previously produced for the period in between II and III was no longer canon.

So, I hope, that you understand where I'm coming from and why I think it was quite subvertive.
Lucas liked Jedi Rocks a lot. I guess he giggled when we all crinched :p

I think shock factor has a lot to do with it, too.

For instance, imagine you saw A New Hope a few times, but never saw Empire. Then, one day your friend casually mentions "Luke Skywalker and his dad, Darth Vader."

"What!?!?" You might say. "But Vader killed Luke's dad. Luke's last name is Skywalker, not Vader! How did you even find out about that?"

But to someone who had watched the movie, the transition was more natural. Because they didn't hear about the story, they experienced it. Same goes for Maul. Sure, even a few seasons deep into The Clone Wars, Maul's reemergence into the story might initially be jarring, but he's worked in into a way that's believable enough in the Star Wars universe.

And that's the point. As far as the movies are concerned, Maul played his part. A moviegoer doesn't need to know any more. But Maul himself still had a story that could be told (which is easy enough, considering he was basically a blank slate in TPM). So, watching that story feels natural. Hearing about it might not.

Yeah. And those are just two random people for people who haven't seen Rebels. The same thing applies.

They are random people if you haven't seen Rebels but that doesn't change the fact that they are canonical in both film and TV. Like the guy with the ice cream maker in TESB is canon. This extreme subjectivism is bizarre. Just because you don't see a tree fall in the woods doesn't mean it didn't happen. Not knowing about something and it not existing are not the same thing.

But there is no difference for people who only watch the movies. Yes, in the canon, they're big deals in the Rebellion, but that doesn't matter to the plot of R1 and the film-going audience at large.

It doesn't matter to the plot of Rogue One, correct, no one is saying that it is. The point is that it is canon and if you aren't into the animated stuff you don't have to go back and watch Rebels to understand who these people are, but they are there for the very reason that within canon it makes sense for them to be there. So if you're a fan of Rebels you see that and you think "cool, they are making an effort to integrate all this stuff like they said they would"

That isn't what i'm arguing though. Someone pointed out that the Ghost was in Rogue One. I said that people wouldn't know what it was unless they had watched the show, which hearkened back to the argument that the ancillary material isn't necessary to watch the movies, but it adds depth for people that do follow the various aspects of canon.

To answer the Original Poster's question.
I consider(ed) the now Legend stuff canon (extremely serioiusly). The new Disney stuff? It hurts so much. Like being Forced to read Edge of Victory I over and over and over.
Anyway... Outsourced, my man! Fancy seeing you here! How you doing?

I don't really get into the Expanded Universe too much. I like Rebels, and I'll read some comics.
The EU isn't necessary to watch and follow the new movies, but they do offer more depth. Perhaps a deeper explaination.
Just like the old EU there are some things I find ridiculous, but it doesn't effect the movies. I follow my own head-canon mostly lol.

    Blast off.
    --- Double Post Merged, Feb 7, 2018 ---

I get that you do like them, but I think it’s backwards and bizarre to tell someone most people don’t know Darth Maul is still alive when there’s absolutely no proof of that whatsoever in any movie past episode one; meanwhile in the cartoons he is so widely known to be alive that he cannot logically never be seen again in a movie. You want some universal truths? Most people only see the movies. These little side projects exist because of the movies. Their sole purpose is to make money. If there were any merit to their stories they would be as close to seamless to the movies as possible – and we all know that’s not true. Expanded universes are rife with contradictions, bad storytelling, and things that quite frankly if you’ve ever seen the movies there inspired by, you know don’t exist.

I think if you and me are sitting down and discussing the movies over some beers and your first response to me if I said I wish Darth Maul had lived was that he did, I’m going to laugh at you. It’s one thing to like something, it’s another to insist that all has the same value – and that being your first answer is insisting they have the same value as the movies.

Go ahead and roll your eyes. I’m going to roll my eyes, laugh, and disregard your opinion if you insist and I can add an apprentice and Darth Maul survived.

    You get it.

I read that comic/graphic novel where the Emperor returns several years ago.Goog God, it was awful!!!

Alright man, I guess we aren't gonna see eye to eye on this. I don't really understand the point of taking pride in being incorrect when discussing the canon of the series, but if you only like the movies then I wish you all the best. I'll enjoy my canon media all the same.
