All the reasons sound thin because they are. They all boil down to some variation of: "Because his friends are a part of the Resistance." or "If he's not part of the Resistance, he's not part of the conflict." Even though he's not obligated to join based on the participation of his friends. Which takes care of the former. And his history with the First Order and friendship with a few members of the Resistance connects him to the conflict whether or not he's part of any side. Which takes care of the latter.
Speaking of which, I find it funny that people compare him to Han but hold Finn to the standard of "Resistance or bust" but have no problem with Han leaving the Rebellion after he had already officially joined and had been serving for years. But I guess once again, it's only wrong if Finn does it, even if he isn't really doing it.
People are afraid of Finn being his own man because he was the only "new" character type introduced for the ST. That and the fact that they know Rey is a one-dimensional character who simply doesn't work without the other characters being pushed down. So in an effort to prop up Rey they don't want Finn having anymore uniqueness or interesting plot-points because it would likely take the spotlight off of her and they and Lucasfilm simply can't have that.
Imagine Finn doing his own thing, what with his already unique connection to the overall conflict. With enough attention and the right writer, that's instant interest from the audience.

From all the pictures leaks for 9 Finn will be Poe's sidekick because in these pictures he standing behind Poe in all the shots. and that picture that was released by JJ Finn on the Falcon standing behind Poe and Chewie as they fly the Falcon. So he just a side charcter and Poe and Rey's side kick. He just a Token character.
    --- Double Post Merged, Jan 17, 2019, Original Post Date: Jan 17, 2019 ---
That is all they can do with Finn, he not the main character just a token character like Lando and Mace WIndu, now we have Finn another diversity character who might just die in 9. Mace Windu died, I thinking they going kill off Lando in 9 or Finn. All three of these characters are just supporting characters. Star Wars never had a black character as a main character because they know it would not sell, and they are add in the movies as diversity. Only difference between Mace Windu and Lando they are very well developed characters but Finn is not. This is why many are upset about where Finn is going as only as a supporting character. You will find out in 9 his story will be not explained neither would expand on it a little because they have a lot of new characters majority white characters add in 9 and Lando a Legacy character coming back, so this will take away from Finn and explaining his background or expanding on him. From leaks pictures for 9 all of them are Finn none of them are Rey or Kylo or Leia, because Finn is a expendable characters and showing leaks pictures of him will not give away the movie because the movie is not focus on him. This is why I fell those leaks pictures are not leaks but Lucasfilm trying to see the fans response to these pictures of two characters that are not the main character neither showing it gives up the main story that is focus on Rey and Kylo Ren.

Next will Finn carry the lightsaber again, the answer is like this I do not think so because how will that move the main plot of the story when he is only the supporting character that the movie is not focus on him. They might give the saber to Rose to troll those who trolled the actor in social media before they give it to Finn. The truth Lucasfilm is clueless about star wars and why their last two movies are not doing well with the fans and movie goers and their merchandise are also going down.

Do we need Finn to go forward with the movie no we don't because from 8 he did not move any thing of the main plot , neither did he interact with any of the main characters of 8 who are Rey and Kylo Ren, which means he is not need for the movie to go forward.

Where would you see Finn in 9, I believe we will see now Finn taging along with Poe than Rey. Some scenes with Rey and Finn with the Resistance as John said when Daisy Ridley seen the script for 9 she told John they are back together. Now this being said and I take it as the truth this means Finn is with her as a supporting character in a few scenes on some mission and Rey coming to Finn aid when he needs it because it clear he will be part of the Resistance only as a fighter maybe the hero solider and a leader from them, and that is it. The main focus of 9 will be Rey and Kylo maybe some new supporting characters along with them, because Finn is not develpoetd character one of these new characters will take his spot that Finn had in 7 and we thought he would be the new hero they will give it to one of the new characters.

9 will focus on the main struggle between Kylo and Rey, Kylo Ren as a leader, and Rey struggling to be a Jedi if she not one by the beginning of 9. The newer characters will take the place what 8 lacked and try to replace it with better story to be told with new supporting characters to help the main characters in their Hero's Journey.

They have no other choice. Otherwise, Star Wars becomes routine. Nothing fresh or new, and that sounds ridiculous for a space movie. The desire to down play Finn has lead to terrible toy sales, and a less exciting story with no imagination. The storm trooper story has been ignored ever since TFA came out. Every theory going forward has been the same, and only involves two characters. The only story people want to come up with is a redemption story for the bad guy. The problem with a redemption story is that it robs Rey of being an actual character. No one is interested in her like they were before TLJ. She is only here to serve a man. The bad guy gets more sympathy than the good people in this trilogy. They can continue to tell themselves the story sounds exciting, but they know it's a lie. The Hallmark and Lifetime Channel would never make a television show based around a woman trying to save a man, because women don't want to. Especially if she is very attractive. They know they don't have to, and some would be insulted just by the thought.

Reylo robs both characters of being actual characters. The Resistance takes away from Finn, and Rey being attached to Kylo takes away from her. We were introduced to them, and it was them we wanted to know more about. Not what they were going to do for others.

Sadly, that seems to be exactly what many people want. That's why they cling so hard to the single-Jedi rule even though that's not even a rule. I really don't see why people want to see Luke and Vader again and again. What's the point in continuing to make movies if it's all basically the same story over and over just in a different package. I think people take the "it rhymes" thing way too literally and way too far.

That is why I see Star Wars dying. There are billions of stars in the galaxy, but these guys want to continue focusing on just one, and we've been doing that for 40 years. The world isn't as ignorant as it used to be. We see 360°, so we know there is more out there. If Disney doesn't want to explore it with Star Wars. Then someone else eventually will with another brand. We want more than what Star Wars is giving us right now.

This is an interesting question. I'd say, thematically, of course we need him.

I mean, isn't this like saying "Do we need Han Solo anymore?" after ANH, or "Do we need Lando anymore?" after ESB. Star Wars is, at its core, typically a smaller battle of philosophies set across the backdrop of a larger war.

So, while the original trilogy was mostly about Luke and Vader, Han was a character that allowed us to see the conflict from another side. While the prequels were mostly about Anakin/Obi Wan/Padme, characters like Yoda and the other jedi masters allowed us to see other branches of Sidious's plans and the Clone Wars. Even Rogue One, where the crux of the final act is mainly about Jyn retrieving the Death Star plans, features the previously introduced characters aiding on other parts of the battlefield.

So, do we need Finn? From an in-universe perspective, I guess I'd say no (though I'd also say no about Han and Lando as well, then). Though I do have my doubts, as he was obviously demonstrated his knowledge of the First Order in the attack on Star Killer Base, which makes him pretty valuable and I'm sure could be put to good use again. Plus, the Resistance kinda needs anyone it can get these days.

But from an in-universe perspective, I'd say absolutely. If you drop Finn, he just becomes a strange footnote on a trilogy that many fans already have some problems with. The phrase "plot hole" is grossly overused in amateur film critique (and sadly, in professional critique as well) these days, and I don't think Finn's disappearance would necessarily be a plot hole, but it would leave a big hole in IX nonetheless.

But it seems like that's exactly what he's shaping up to be regardless. If all Finn's role is going to be is regular intel guy and that's put up against super-jedi, extraordinary pilots and Resistance leaders then a footnote is likely going to be the outcome for him.

Again, considering how badly destroyed the Resistance, I'd say Finn's probably gotten a pretty significant promotion by now.

True. It would be a lot more awesome if it were his actions as opposed to events around him that earned that promotion. I mean for all the bad things that can be said (rightly or wrongly) about Kylo, he earned his promotion. Arguably so does Luke (with his oneness with the Force). Everybody else (Rey, Finn, and Poe) fail upwards.

I think this thread underscores the lack of a compelling trilogy arc for Finn (which I suspect is a function of the writers being given too little constraint - either JJ needed to tone down the mystery or Rian needed to turn it up). Rey's journey has been about the New Jedi, it's consistent across the first two movies (and likely will be for the 3rd). Finn doesn't have that. In TFA he leaves the FO and the big question is what's next? Rian's answer: join the Resistance.

Ok. Question answered. Now we know. And there's really nothing compelling about it. There's no particular in-universe reason to follow him. I assume the writers will come up with something to make following him relevant (and I'm guessing it will be situational, not something intrinsic to Finn himself, like Rey's Force abilities or Poe's piloting skills).

Finn is the deuteragonist of the sequel regardless of what went Down in TLJ Making tritagonist he is Like Han Was in OT and Kenobi in PT Kylo Ren is not the secondary protagnoist in the Grand scheme of Things also He is my favorite of The Sequel Trilogy he Joined The Resistance plus his experience as a Former Stormtrooper Gives The Resistance an advantage since Intel wise since he knows there protocol I for One didnt mind the Canto Bight storyline or his emotional fight with Phasma he The Resistance has a wildcard army as well with The Stormtroopers if Finn can persuade them as well Finn is a Big Deal l I don't wheres his arc goes as long as he is not a Lover to Poe but I do enjoy there Bromance Like Luke and Han and Obi and Anakin before them

I guess if you want to claim that.

I still think that he was pretty dang instrumental in the Starkiller base mission- not only in his information provided, but in basically being part of the handfull of soldiers on the ground. Personally, I wouldn't gloss over that.

I think it would be great character development if he's moonwalking and taking down FO troops.

For the record, I would want something entirely different for Finn but if past is prologue (and it usually is) I don't think it's something that's likely to happen.

I agree with you, he was instrumental in Starkiller base mission... so was Han, so was Chewie, and so was Poe, they all also happened to be pretty good pilots in addition to being instrumental in the Star Killer Base mission. Those skills allow them to stand out, and they're portable. Hans flying skills were useful against the Empire and useful against the FO as well. Poe's skills on Takadonna were similarly used on SKB and on the Dreadnought. They're intrinsic to the characters. Regardless of where those characters are, they have those skills with them.

I would have liked for Finn to have the same. But it is not a shared view, most of what I have seen is that people are happy with Finn being "FO knowledgeable". That's his skill. He doesn't need to be particularly good at anything else or stand out in any other way. That's why I suspect that Finn will be relevant via a situation in EPIX, he'll know something, or learn something that will be applicable for that moment, but it won't be a skill set that he carries forward (like his knowledge of SKB no longer being relevant once we get to TLJ). I personally think we have stretched past the limit (even for Science Fiction purposes) the amount of operational knowledge a single Storm Trooper has about an entire military. But because it's science fiction, I imagine we'll be asked to suspend our disbelief one more time.

For me it's not about does Finn have anything worth contributing to the story, because I don't think any of the characters on their own have anything worth getting into Except for Finn. Rey and Kylo are reboots from the OT. They are so much of a reboot that people want to reboot the story line from ROTJ.

What story does Rey and Kylo have that is worth telling?

I still want Finn away from the Resistance. If he is with them, then I no longer have any interest in the story. I don't care how JJ makes it happen, but anything else is unsatisfactory. I was never interested in the Resistance, because they were never sold to me with a story arc. Finn was.

I'll save you some time. Finn will be a member of the Resistance in Episode IX. He's one of the heroes to the Resistance in this trilogy to why wouldn't he be a member of the new Rebellion?

I wouldn't say that Finn fails upwards considering the fact that he wouldn't be anywhere near the position that many are saying he'll be in had the regular leaders been alive. Poe was promoted by Leia because he earned it Rey got Luke's seal of approval because she earned it but I'm supposed to be excited by Finn's "promotion", which isn't even a guaranteed outcome, when he only would have it because everyone else who was more qualified died. That's like being bragged on for being promoted to assistant manager only because everyone else on staff quit. Yeah, some accomplishment...

Simple. He is better than they are with a better story to tell. Getting stuck with this ass backward group takes away from him. I can't settle when I know there is better.

I'm not sure what to tell you. If this is your position then you're going to be disappointed. Also, based your continued sharp criticism of the Resistance you're too poisoned on this story to say anything nice about it.
Finn was a huge part of why Starkiller Base was destroyed and he killed Captain Phasma. Finn has earned it as much as Poe who disobeyed a direct order and leaked military plans to the First Order.
