Just an expansion of what we already know, it's not changing anything pre-established or re-starting anything. That would be a reboot.

A reboot of what? You need a template to reboot something and R1 has no real template. Unless you count the old EU stories about the death star planes as original story but they aren't canon anymore.
So no, I don't consider R1 to be a reboot. I see it like @Seb, it's just an expansion.

No. I see it as a prequel and a story not yet told.

Nah, it's like when you're reading one of those giant eBook versions of the Making Of for the OT, and you have a "click here to learn more" type of button that takes you from reading about behind the scenes production and then you get to watch out takes or test footage for a minute.

By the way I recommend those books. Currently making my way through the ESB one.

I'm hoping for a few more episodes like R1 that could fill in gaps in the OT era or even further back on n the timeline like before the PT.

No. It is a self contained story of an event that took place prior to ANH.

No. Just fills in some gaps. A reboot would retell the story. This just offers details to the story we already know.

I"m not sure I understand the argument for it being a reboot. It is supposed to be in the same timeline, with some of the same characters and actors.

No, I would say it's a prequel sequel.... It comes before ANH with a story of what comes happens leading up to ANH with maybe a familiar character or two but mostly new characters. It also comes after ROTS so it's a sequel to those. I guess technically it could be considered an inbetweenquel.

It's a Star Wars movie, why does it need a label past that?

Yeah it's not re-telling a story which would classify it as a reboot which is whay it's called "A STAR WARS Story" and not "A STAR WARS Reboot."

No because Rogue One isn't a reboot/remake of any prior film.

Rogue One is simply the first anthology film ('A Star Wars Story' Franchise). It's completely original. It's the foundation of these anthology films.

Think of it like this: In the old Expanded Universe we had tonnes of canon material via books, games, comics books, and more that provided us with depth to the SW Universe. Now we have feature length films on top of books, comics etc to do this. :)
