    You can write other ways for Rey to "go it alone" besides Luke's death. I could see him living, founding a new Jedi Order with Rey as his #2/eventually successor, and then (depending on whether or not Mark wants to come back), perhaps dying more peacefully later on. More Yoda than Han essentially.

    i think he'll survive. there's no dramatic reason to kill him.

    the story will focus on Rey and she's already lost a father figure, so no need to repeat that.

    also, he's Luke Skywalker. killing him would be obscene.

    My personal opinion is he will die in IX and return in X-XII briefly as a force ghost. Seems legit to me.

    I think Luke hangs around for a while. I think he's one of the few original cast that enjoys Star Wars. I think he has be big role in Ep 8, then a smaller supporting role in Ep 9 after that, I think he hangs on as the Yoda of this time and trains others and heads the Jedi council.

    I think they have to kill off Luke, Leia and Lando if he returns, because what happens if they want to have another trilogy and one of them, well, passes away in real life? Mark Hamill, Carrie Fisher and Billy Dee Williams are not young anymore. Not trying to be a downer or anything, but they have to take that into consideration.

    Weird that I never saw this thread before today...

    To the topic; No, I don't believe that he'll die in the ST, as I expect it to end on a relatively triumphant note, and I do think that when he dies it'll be at the beginning of the next trilogy as to set the tone for the arc.
