You might as well do that to all of the six movies that Lucas made. If Disney tries to reboot the Prequel Trilogy, I will not waste my money on it. Period.

You and a lot of other people would be of this mindset. It just isn't a financially reasonable risk to take, and under Bob Iger, I don't think that Disney want to take too many risks when they've been making record profits by playing it safe with Star Wars sequels and spin-offs, Marvel Cinematic Universe movies, big-budget animated flicks, and dozens of live-action Disney remakes. Like any major studio, they're in this for the business. The reason why they're making a Han Solo movie is primarily for business purposes. I've seen a lot of fans who are on the fence about it in the best of situations - and this is even with huge crowd-pleasing, geek-favorite directors Phil Lord and Christopher Miller, and the screenwriter of The Empire Strikes Back working hard at it. However, even if there are fans who see the movie as the worst thing to happen since the Star Wars Holiday Special, it should still find an audience who want to learn more about the character and where he came from, even at the risk of "ruining" the character's mystique (which I think shouldn't be a real concern).

Now, look at the Prequel Trilogy. While debate over the quality of the movies remains a contested point by fans to this day, the vast majority of fans are more interested in "moving on" and showing new storylines. The people who would actually be in favor of a remake are a fringe minority, and Hollywood remakes have a track record of sucking most of the time anyway. Meanwhile, if you look at general audiences, most people are good with the Prequel Trilogy, but like the fans, they would rather "move on" and see something new rather than a rehash of older material. Even the live-action Disney remakes do something different with the source material (see: Maleficent in relation to Sleeping Beauty). Remaking the Prequel Trilogy to get rid of a few contentious Lucas-isms would be a pointless exercise that would most likely leave the fans in favor of it disappointed and everyone else uninterested, which is a bad business move no matter how you cut it. It's not like re-releasing the original, unaltered cuts of the Original Trilogy (which I don't think will make Lucasfilm nearly as much money as fans think it will when they finally do it) - there's no real demand for another take on the Prequel Trilogy. Those movies were made, and it's time for Lucasfilm to move on to financially-greener pastures.

remaking the PT wouldnt change anything. Pomojema is correct like others, like myself that a remake wouldnt matter to the majority of us. changing the storyline like others would want is never going to happen. like when I said I would like to read/know how George Lucas envisioned the ST himself but I'm happy with what JJ started and excited that they continued the SW saga bloodline with introducing a new character in each trilogy. lone character in Anakin/Luke/Rey. Let Disney build on the SW saga with anthologies. they are slowly getting the mass into the sidestories of SW.

Disney wants money from all the fans, they're not going to do anything to upset or alienate any of them, even the dumb ones, so the PT will be left alone. Instead, they're just going to make alternative prequels, that's what Rogue One, Han Solo and TBA are - they just can't call them that - remember, no upset or alienation. I also suspect one of the reasons why Episode 7(and probably 8 and 9) has been mainly marketed and packaged without much mention of the episode number, is to lessen its separateness from these new alternative prequels.

From a Selfish Perspective: I absolutely disagree with Disney remaking the Prequels. They should be kept as they are. I was born in 95 so I grew up with ALL of the Star Wars and loving all of them. I collected the Action Figures and Comics that related to both trilogies.

Now that I'm older I much prefer the Original Trilogies, but I still love the Prequels!

From a Disney/Lucasfilm Perspective: I don't think it's financially viable. I think Disney would much rather invest their money in making their own mark on the Star Wars universe. Like the person above me said, they're kinda making their own prequels now i.e. Rogue One, and the other Anthology films.

I could possibly see Lucasfilm creating an Old Republic trilogy one day but we'll see. Prequel remake? Thanks, but no thanks.

Yes, and I'll tell you why:

Episodes 1-3 don't make sense. At all.

Lots of other reasons exist, too.

The narrative meanders, the acting is mostly bad, the dialogue (especially the romantic scenes) is god awful, and the CGI is overused.

But mostly, the story doesn't connect to the OT.

There are some really easy fixes: explaining what a Sith is, why a war would happen, removing the "prophesy" and virgin birth, and burning any trace of Jar Jar, midichlorians, and stage directions where people sit in semicircles and discuss things.

I'm going to have to disagree with you. Those three movies make sense in a way that a lot of people do not want to acknowledge. I'm beginning to suspect that there is something about the story for the 1999-2005 movies that really scared a good number of fans. The trilogy's portrayal of the human psyche might be a lot more realistic than they care to acknowledge.

I think that these are opinions. Some are completely valid, but not good enough reasons for Lucasfilm/Disney to spend time and money on remaking a prequel trilogy.

They already remade, in delightful and funny lego form. Jar Jar dies in every episode. Leave the real ones be.

Well most of the stories in the prequels aren't meant to connect to the original trilogy since all they do is set up the characters and their motivations in the original movies and the same goes wi the sequel trilogy where it doesn't connect to the original trilogy besides characters and is just been et ip by some books and such and not by tue originals

Yes, and Jar-jar was meant to be a sith lord all the time. We know, the prequels are serectly masterpieces. All the bad dialogues and incoherent stroylines were part of a big plan...

The only thing which scared the fans was how bad the movies were. The trilogy's portayal of its characters are the outcome of a director who hasnt made a movie in 20 years and lost every contact with the story and the audience. Its the same with Indy 4. Spielberg didn't want aliens, pardon ,,extradimensional beeings" in an Indiana Jones movie. Lucas just forced him this stupid idea. It has nothing to do with realism at all, just bad writing from an uninspired filmmaker. Lucas was a pioneer when he was young. A revolulionary filmmaking genious who changed the history of cinema. But he was also just a human. The sudden success, his divorce, and the decades in the non-artistic (business) part of filmmaking changed him (as it would many). I'm personally just thankful to him for the originals and trying to pretend the prequels never existed.

As for this topic. The prequels should not be remade. We should focus on the future, on new stories. What we should definitely do however is to voice our opinions to prevent the upcoming movies from becoming like the prequels. And btw everyone can be 100% sure that Disney won't touch the prequels as long as Lucas lives. Belive it or not, business (especially filmmaking) is not always exclusively about money. Everyone in Disney and Lucasfilm deeply respects George Lucas.

Not right away, but in 10 years, I'm betting they will remake them.

It's not my opinion that the prophesy, Qui-Gon, and the virgin birth are key elements of the PT that are never mentioned in the OT.

The PT portray Anakin, the supposed hero and best friend of Obi-Wan as a whiny, back talking, creepy, arrogant guy intolerant of democracy. He's the hero who's fall to the dark side was supposed to be a surprise and a tragedy to the hypothetical new viewer watching the movies 1-9.

If the "love story" of a 16 year old girl and a 9 year old boy doesn't skeeve you out, I think you're not at the right website. That's the basis of both the love story of 1-3 and also the final and primary cause of the main event for epis1-6 in that it effects the Galaxy

That's me staying as far away from opinions as much as possible.

Not everyone at Disney deeply respects Lucas, nor should they.

He's a guy who was involved with 5 or 6 great movies.

He did help pioneer selling someone their childhood back to them over and over well into adulthood. Disney gave up on customers at puberty and just tried to be inoffensive until they had kids of their own 15 years after they got too old for Mickey.

"We should focus on the future?" Which studio do you mean, because Lucasfilm and Disney just released a loose remake of ANH, the next film is the backstory of the Macguffin of ANH, then the the "darker" second film of the current trilogy in which the talented but raw teen from a desolate desert planet trains with the grizzled, slightly unhinged, last living Jedi on a watery, remote planet in hiding from the scarred son of a Skywalker dressed in Black robes.

The next film after that is the origin story of the best character in the OT.

LF & D are committed to selling those first three movies back to us in as many permutations as possible and I. can't say I blame them.

I agree that the Prequels are deeper than many give them credit for, I don't think there is anything inherently scary in their message though, for children maybe(they will definitely make kids think), but not for mature adults. I personally feel that they lack in character development and acting(especially on Hayden Christiansen's part), but they work wonderfully on paper. One thing that solidified that for me was reading the novelization of Revenge of the Sith, it was excellent, one of my favorite Star Wars novels(and I've read most of them). Going back and thinking about the PT, I realized that it does have a lot more to it than many give it credit for. I don't personally think the deeper levels of the story make them good films though, primarily because I think Lucas isn't great at directing actors and the rushed nature of some of the relationships.

I will restate though, the Prequels will NOT be remade, NOR should they. Logistically it just doesn't make sense from a canon standpoint. Consider how many canon sources tie into them at this point. Starting with the films, we have the Special Editions which have been altered to give them greater connection to the PT. We also have The Clone Wars animated show and Rebels which is also tied in with both the PT and TCW. The comics and novels also have plenty of tie-ins to the PT as well. Another thing to consider is that there is a high likelihood that we will get an Obi-Wan film starring Ewan McGregor(his presence being a popular aspect of the PT).

Also important is the fact that remaking the PT is taking a big dump on the fans that grew up with those films and love them. Even though I don't love the PT films anymore, they are still a defining aspect of my youth that I loved when I was growing up, and I wouldn't want to see them remade. I can only imagine how much more insulting that would be for fans that still love the films.

All of that being said, I do think its possible that the PT will be remade decades down the line, but when they do it they will reboot the ENTIRE Star Wars saga, not just the Prequels. I doubt any of us will live to see that day though, or if we do, we'll probably be to old and senile to care at that point ;).

I think that's quite a pessimistic way of looking at the PT, because I still love them and grew up with them. Also, you're saying that Anakin should have been something else, a different character really... but you are not George Lucas. George wrote Anakin the way he wanted to and that's what we have. Like the gent above me said, maybe in decades in the future they might remake the whole series but not in 10 years. Financially that makes no sense and board of directors would shut it down.

The gent above me pretty much covered the other points I was going to say. (yoda 2)

Most of the groundstructure of the PT seems to be salvagable...The only work it actually needs is dialoge and drama...Maybe filling some holes of plot...

As I had stated earlier, if Disney insists upon remaking the Prequel movies, they might as remake the Original movies, which was no more perfect than the 1999-2005 movies and had its own set of flaws. While they're at it, they might as well take a stab at "The Force Awakens".

I'm very pessimistic, partly because I've been a SW my whole life (going back to ESB).

George Lucas created something beautiful with ANH, but he also created modern movie merchandising money grabs. His intellectual property was the object of a legal scam where parents bought empty boxes and gave them to their kids for Christmas. Lucas helped create SW and Indy, but he also created dumb stuff like the midichlorians and Jar-Jar. And along the way he oversaw a business that charged people $6.99 for a catalog.

I don't hate Lucas, nor do I deny his gifts. I also don't deny his missteps. The PT aren't worthless, nor are the OT flicks close to perfect. Both have their issues and charms. The OTs are just vastly superior and are the thing that started it all. Every movie or video game after ROTJ is chasing the dragon.

If you think the Disney board of directors would fire the CEO of Disney for trying to remake movies that made hundreds of millions of dollars, you're wrong. Corporate boards care about $$$$.

Lucas changed his story lots of times about doing more movies after ROTJ.

And to speak to one more point you objected to: Anakin was described a certain way in the OT. Certain connected events in the OT & PT make no sense when Lucas tried to connect them.

It's not unusual for the creator of an intellectual property to misunderstand why certain parts are more important to fans than others.

Also, it's clear that Lucas learned the wrong lessons from ANH and ESB and those mistakes show in ROTJ & the PT. he and Kurtz stopped working together after ESB. And I think Kurtz's version of events has been proven by history.

Lastly, I'm not saying that the remakes of the PT will be better than the GL ones (though they'd have to try hard to be worse) or even good (see Terminator franchise for example), but in 10-15 years (3 years after TPM...a millennium in Hollywood, a new Anakin/Obi-Wan/Clone wars trilogy will likely be hitting the screen. That's life and that's Hollywood.

Who you going to call to help you disprove me? Ghostbusters, Captain Kirk, or Mad Max?

Maybe Batman or Superman or JohnnyUtah will help.
    --- Double Post Merged, Apr 23, 2016, Original Post Date: Apr 23, 2016 ---

They are already remaking OT. TFA = ANH, and ESB = EpVIII. See my earlier post for confirmed similarities.

For the record I think EVIII will be much better than TFA.
