I highly doubt there will be any reboots...probably re-interpretations "from a certain point of view" about what happened in The PT in future movies.

I agree, honestly I think they'll just continue to do what they are doing now, mostly ignore the Prequels in the films going forward. I say mostly because I do believe that in all likelihood, we probably will get an Obi-Wan movie with Ewan McGregor at some point. Considering his popularity with most of the SW fan base(even a lot of the PT haters) and the fact that he has openly stated that he would love to do an Obi-Wan movie, it's a no brainer for Disney. I'd says it's a matter of when rather than if.

I do think that there will probably be a total reboot of Star Wars at some distant point in the future, but by that point I think most of us will be dead or we will be to old and senile to care at that point ;).

The way I look at the Prequels, even if you don't like the movies, you still have to admit that they greatly expanded the Star Wars universe and did a lot of fantastic world building. Just because I cringe every time I watch the romantic scenes doesn't mean I can't appreciate seeing interesting new worlds like Coruscant and Kamino.

Fans simply need to learn to take the good with the bad. In any franchise that is designed to be as large and expansive as Star Wars, pretty much everyone is going to find things that they don't like at some point. Rather than throwing a fit and demanding that things be changed, just move on and focus on what you DO like.

I freely acknowledge this won’t happen any time soon (or likely ever), but I personally am incredibly interested in simply seeing another creative team’s take on Lucas’s PT framework. I fully believe there are good movies hidden beneath the misfires of the prequels. All they maybe needed was two or three other competent screen writers and a more capable director to pull the overarching story into focus and tell it in a compelling way.

Lucas has always been candid in admitting his distaste for the writing process. He has truly inspired ideas but detests having to figure out how to make a story out of them. Couple that with being a notoriously disconnected director who hadn’t helmed a film in two decades, and you have the recipe for exactly what resulted.

A live action concept is well out of the question, but I think an animated ‘elseworlds’ reimagining of the PT has merit. Not a drastic overhaul, but a revisionist take that’s still true to the original concept. This doesn’t jive at all with Disney’s current roadmap, but I can definitely say this project would have my money in a second. Maybe I’m the only one though.

They could still get a fresh team and do like better "edits" with footage that I'm sure was shot that wasn't included in any sort of deleted scenes...and if they add deleted scenes, then have them finished with today's VFX...that could be a way to "Reboot" The PT in a way...

That’s a novel idea, but as we saw with the 'Anti-Cheese' Edits, pruning these pictures only gets you so far. The uncomfortable, vapid performances of the mostly dead eyed cast are still there. The visual noise (sound and fury signifying nothing) is still there. If someone can miraculously turn meatloaf into filet mignon, I’d be happy to see it, but otherwise I remain mostly dubious on this front.

Sorry, I couldn't bring myself to read all 7 pages of this thread. But I read page 1 and page 7, so that's good enough, right? Right?!?

    There's lots to discuss here.

First - Will they remake the prequels? I say absolutely yes... eventually. Disney bought Star Wars to make money. They bought one of the three pieces of Western mythology from the 20th century that look like they will endure for decades and even centuries (the others being Lord of the Rings and the DC/Marvel universes). But like all mythology, eventually the stories get retold. As time passes it is almost certain that they'll retell the Star Wars stories, for better or worse. Star Wars will then join the following pieces of mythology which have been portrayed in multiple versions:
    - Lord of the Rings
    - Dracula
    - Sherlock Holmes
    - Superman / Batman / Spiderman/ etc.
    - The Legend of King Arthur

Seeing that the prequels were not as well received as the originals, they will probably redo those before they mess with the OT.

Second - Should they remake the prequels? Well, probably not. As Pomo said on page 1 (like a year ago), why waste resources on remaking these films when you could be telling new stories? My only counter argument to that is that many of us feel the prequels fell so short of what the prequels COULD have been. When I was a boy in the 70s/80s I remember discussing with my friends how Darth Vader became Darth Vader. We heard that Ben fought Darth Vader inside a volcano and Darth fell in. That fight and the circumstances leading up to it were something I imagined daily for most of my childhood. In my mind, that scene in RotS with Anakin and Obi Wan swinging back and forth and flailing at each other, surfing over a river of lava... well that just never happened. The prequels are so much less real to me than my imagination. You can call it canon, but to me it just never happened.

So curmudgeons like me would be open to a retelling of the prequels. I would be interested to see if they came closer to the tone of what I feel they should have been. And new generations would be open to a retelling also I think. It would be hardest on the generation that saw them as children, for whom those movies are their first (and therefore truest) representation of Star Wars. But it's bound to happen some day.

Sorry for the essay, I could keep typing all day!

Well said, @stencil. I had the better part of the three years to be indoctrinated by the OT before TPM came out, but the more I study and watch the PT, the less I like it.

As far as Disney remaking the PT, I think it's possible, just not likely to happen for a long time. I know it's a fad to remake films right now, but it's just not a good idea while the Saga's story is still ongoing. If I were Disney, if I remake the PT, I would remake the whole Saga. The whole story would have to be retooled in areas to make the overall narrative more cohesive. For instance, In the PT there's the whole "Bring balance to the Force" thing that is never mentioned in the OT, and then Lor San Tekka mentions that in TFA! That would be remedied in some form. Whether it's redefining what it means in PT, and have Obi-Wan tell Luke about it, or the misconceptions the Jedi had, or whatever, but we see it fulfilled in ROTJ, and then we see how needs a constant refulfillment every few decades? I hope you all see what I mean. Not to mention the inconsistencies with how old everyone gets between ROTS and ANH.
Essentially it would recanonize everything. And I really can't see Disney doing for another fifty years! It also greatly depends on how closely the make the films together, and what the plans are for the present. Because if they plan to make XXVII, XXVIII, and XXIX, then the Star Wars Saga Reboot will be next century.

Yes, I agree it's not going to happen for a while. Disney's priorities should be:

    1) Finish the Sequel Trilogy
    2) Standalone movies
    3) Old Republic Trilogy / Sequel Trilogy 2

Only at some point after those do I see Disney looking to retell the OT or PT. Although remember that in the last 25 years we've had 3 retellings of Batman, 3 (going on 4) of Spiderman, and 3 (4?) of Superman. I don't ever want to see Star Wars do that, but it's possible.

Also, this may be splitting hairs but a REMAKE seems pointless. I find it more likely that they would RETELL the story, changing plot points and characters to make a "better" whole as you mentioned. This happens with the oldest and most classic mythologies. The essence of the characters and plot stay the same, but all of the details are changed to do something fresh.

news flash: there are millions of people who enjoy the prequels AND they were big financial successes, so no, disney will never remake the prequels. not only would there be a big backlash against it, it's disrespect to george lucas. you don't have to like the films or appreciate them, but they're part of the family and they aren't going anywhere. anyone even entertaining the idea that they would ever remake those films is off their rocker. let's be logical folks

Ah yes, "remake" "reboot" "retelling", I mix them up too often. The biggest difference between Star Wars and superhero films, is that SW was an original idea. With the comics, you have tons of retellings to choose from when a new film is starting. So yes, thank you for correcting my terms! A retelling is what would happen.
But there is still a large amount of people who still don't like them. I'm not here to argue, so I won't get into my personal views of the PT v. OT (feel free to PM me if want to hear my views). Anyway, my argument and reasoning for the PT being remade will be done so with the OT, the ST, and possibly the following trilogy or two, depending on how long the Saga goes and when it's remade. I'm not expecting to be young if or when it happens, and I highly doubt the fans who saw ANH in 1977 will even be around, let alone Lucas himself.

I can't see the Prequels being redone. Too much canon material is set during or references Prequel events that you would have to be very careful to not invalidate anything- because now, everything really is capital-C "Canon," and you couldn't contradict that like George did with anything that came before the Prequels.

    Not even in fifty years?
If the Prequels are remade, I would think everything will be remade, as I've been saying. I highly doubt Disney would just remake one trilogy, unless they have some really lame reason for it. Unless they are intentional about making the remake in the same "universe" and it would be told from another "point of view", it would rewrite the canon. I don't think there's any way around it.

Or what though? People riot in the streets? The world economy collapses? The vast minority of movie goers get butt hurt, rail against it on the internet and then go see it anyway?

Realistically, maybe we Star Wars fans revolt and boycott, but the average ticket buyer doesn't care about canon. They just want to be entertained and they're the ones the studio actually cares about.

Indeed, and the average moviegoer would much rather see new Star Wars stories than a redo of the PT, regardless of their feelings on it. It just doesn't make sense financially to redo the PT when it is FAR more profitable to make new movies instead. Star Wars is something that lends itself beautifully to serialized continuous story telling, which makes sense given that it was inspired by other adventure serials. Instead of dwelling on the movies that are divisive among fans and moviegoers, LucasFilm will forge ahead with new movies. If they want to touch on the Prequel era and do more justice to the concept, Anthology movies will cover that just fine.

I think there will always be the possibility/option for them to be remade but I don't think they will. But if they do, It will be long time from now. As previously stated, that would take a lot of time and resources to make given there is a plethora of material they could use and directions they could go for new movies. As @bluemilk7 said, there are a lot of fans that liked he PT. Don't think they would use that time and money when there is that plethora of material to use. Once they run out, I could see them redoing them. Plus I think it would be a slap in the face to Lucas to change his work and cannon while he is still alive. I feel Disney would have more respect for Lucas. If they were to be remade, I think it would be after he passes and a while after at that.

EDIT: @JV-24601 Just beat me to it :)

Fans simply need to learn to take the good with the bad.

I'm still trying to achieve this with "THE FORCE AWAKENS". Perhaps one day I will.

In my opinion, I definitely do not want Disney to get rid of the prequels and I'm almost positive that they won't. Unlike most SW fans, I love the prequels. Of course the originals were by far better, but I honestly don't think the prequels should have gotten as much fan hate as they did. I was shocked that people didn't like them as much as I did! So here are some reasons why I think the prequels are an important instalment in the SW saga and should NOT be removed.

    - First of all, Ewan McGregor! I'm sure most fans can agree that he was born to play Obi Wan Kenobi and I personally don't think anyone has the right to argue. His one-liners and en pointe performance did wonders for the prequels themselves.

    - next up, Yoda. Now I preferred Yoda in the OT because of his wisdom and the fact that he lived in the slimy mud hole that is Dagobah (I love Dagobah!)
But Yoda in the PT is still pretty awesome! His lightsaber skills were completely unexpected and you really understood how deep his knowledge of the Force was.

    - Hayden Christensen. I know he has been criticised repeatedly for his acting in the prequels but I can't understand why. I believe he did a great job portraying Anakin's descend into the Dark Side. In his acting there were always the undercurrents of something darker in Anakin's nature. And his facial expressions were very well done.

    - the script. I'm not saying that this was a highlight necessarily but I do want to contest those who think the writing was questionable. I had no problem with the way the story was told and I know the scenes in AOTC where Anakin was trying to express his love for Padme were continuously bashed for their ridiculous lines and wooden acting, but I believe this is what George Lucas was trying to portray. He wanted Anakin to seem awkward and out of his comfort zone. So I don't see why people think it was unintentionally dumb!

    - R2D2 and C3P0 duo. George Lucas brought back some much loved characters to give the prequels some familiarity. I thought this was a good move and I continuously got a kick out of the fact that Darth Vader built C3P0! The amount of times he said 'Thank the Maker!'....

    - Lightsaber duels. No one can argue with the fact that the duels in the PT outshines those in the OT. And please don't think that this is a negative comment aimed at the OT, because this was again an intentional move by George Lucas. The fights in the OT were between an old man, a half robot and a young man barely trained in lightsaber combat. So of course they won't be as good as they were in a time when Jedi were the guardians of the Galaxy. I found the fights extremely entertaining and emotionally charged.

    - Darth Maul. Now okay, Darth Maul is very cool and I thoroughly enjoyed his fight scene with Obi Wan and Qui Gon, but I just want to say one thing. In my eyes, Darth Maul died in the Phantom Menace, killed by Obi Wan. I think it is ridiculous that they brought him back in TCW. Of course I would have loved to see him again, but he died okay! That is something we should all accept!

    - General Grievous! I love General Grievous. Always have! How could you not? He can wield four light sabers and is half droid half weird alien! What's not to love?

    - Jar Jar Binks. Nah just kidding. Some things are unforgivable! But without Jar Jar, there would be no Empire so let's consider what's more important!

Now these are only the main topics of discussion that I would like to give my opinion on, but besides those, I thought the prequels were amazing in every aspect (besides Jar Jar) and people should be more accepting. I mean, midi chlorians are not that ghastly! It made no difference to the Force in my opinion! I barely noticed it when it was mentioned! Anyway, just because the prequels are completely different to the originals, it DOES NOT mean that they are bad movies and destroy the Star Wars saga. They don't, and they are completely necessary to the saga and provide a positive impact. No one should mess with them, and it should stay that way.
