With John Boyega, Daisy Ridley talking about the script being "much darker" than TFA's was and with Rian Johnson at the helm and the way the story from TFA is leading towards and left off at, do you think Episode VIII can beat ESB in terms of darkness and grittiness?

You generally don't bring Rian Johnson in to make a light-hearted film.

Note: Dark doesn't mean it will be good, bad or what ever

It might not be the darkest in terms of where the story is left at the end of the episode, but I expect that the things we learn about Rey and Kylo Ren's pasts will be pretty dark. If they get into the whole destruction of Luke's new Jedi Order, it could get really dark.

It'd be hard to top the darkness of the 2nd half of ROTS. The thing is, TFA had dark stuff in it. But it balanced that out with quite a bit of humor, a sense of wonder and adventure, and a hopeful (if not exactly a 100% happy) ending.

So I feel like the ESB principle applies here. Not that it'll be the same kind film as ESB mind you, just that a "darker second" act is nothing new. In fact, it happens in many trilogies. And yeah, I agree with GeneralMadine that, if we get more info on Rey and Kylo's pasts, that could end up being pretty dark. Also, Luke's as well, and what happened to his students. Plus, we might very well get a much more dangerous Kylo gunning for revenge.

But part of me hopes that the ending might not be AS dark as the ending of ESB was. Perhaps a bit more mixed/unclear instead.

"Dark" doesn't necessarily mean bad/sad things will happen...

The Force Awakens was already pretty dark for a Star Wars movie. If they are saying Episode VIII will be darker than TFA then it will probably be the darkest one yet.

I agree. I think it has the potential to get close though, specially if they get into what happened with Luke's academy.

Hmm...I've said something similar before, but:

No one HAS to die...we already got one MAJOR death(s) in TFA. "Dark" can mean the thematic elements of the film. For example, exploring maybe Ben's internal torment between being "Ben Dolo" and "Kylo Ren." Also, exploring more familial relationships about Rey having her obsession with her parents. It could also explore the aftermath of Leia dealing with Han Solo's death and whatever is going on between Luke Skywalker and Rey. Of course, we can't forget about Snoke, Phasma, and Hux. The film could also explore the defeatedness of Phasma and the utter failure that Snokewill probably deem as Hux, how those two will react. Also how Kylo and Hux's relationship will change after the events of TFA a and delving deeper into the "man" that is Snoke. In essence, "dark" could mean "deep..." A lot of the time, "dark" can be used as a term in Hollywood to describe "character-driven," although it's a very broad term .

TFA wasn't a "dark " film overall. No more so than the original. Both had dark stuff in them, which was balanced out by humor (TFA might very well be the funniest SW movie actually), a sense of adventure/wonder, and an either happy, or at least hopeful, ending. Lets not forget all of the dark stuff in the original:

-Vader choking a man to death with his bare hands like ten minutes into the movie.
-Luke's Aunt and Uncle being murdered, and their charred/burned corpses being shown onscreen.
-Leia being tortured. Sure it's offscreen, but it's made abundantly clear what's happening to her beforehand.
-Alderaan being blown up/Leia's adoptive parents being killed.
-Han shooting Greedo in the face (onscreen) and Obi Wan cutting some alien's arm off (onscreen).
    -Obi Wan's death.
    -Etc.

And yet people don't call that movie a "dark" film overall.

I still think that TFA may be a tad bit too humorous .

I don't, it found it freaking hilarious in many places. And it was appropriate humor that fit imo. My theatre cracked up like at least 4-5 times over the course of the movie.

I don't think that "dark", in this instance, refers to poorly lit sets. I think things are going to go downhill for some of our protagonists.

While that's right in the literal sense, things have ALREADY a gone downhill for them :).

Given the death of a major character in TFA, I doubt we'll see another in VII, but stranger things have happened. Delving into Rey's lineage and past, Luke's past 10-15 years, and Finn's origins won't be uplifting. Emotional heartache on the horizon, perhaps with Rey struggling in a potential re-match with Kylo Ren. Maybe we'll get a funeral or tribute of sorts for Han Solo? If you've seen Johnson's "Looper," you get the sense the overall feel of the Episode VII may be a bit darker cinematography-wise and thematically (though maybe not overwhelmingly so) than we've seen in the OT and TFA. I'm excited to see what happens!

I want to see more of the Knights of Ren. I'm predicting that vision with the Knights of Ren could have been a foreshadow to the future. I don't believe it to be in the past when Ben killed all of Luke's students bc he wouldn't have had the crossguard lightsaber. In the trailer, it looks like Kylo Ren is holding another light saber. That could be darth vader's light saber. I also remember seeing some kind of structure in the background, it was when the lightning flashed and I saw it for literally 1/2 a second.

It's right at 2:46. It looks like 2 people are standing next to it... Could it be Snoke?

I might be overthinking this whole thing:/

i voted that it won't be dark at all.

with JB saying it will be dark, Kasdan saying it will be weird and Rian Johnson directing.... it's a little too obvious to me and sounds like a classic rope-a-dope lol

don't mind either way to be honest.. long as it's great :)

It's the second fil of a trilogy, a SW trilogy no less, and it's directed by Rian Johnson. Yeah, it ain't going to be all sunshine and rainbows, that much is certain.

A movie being dark implies more to the tone of the movie then on screen deaths or dismemberments. In ESB, there were no major deaths. But we saw the Alliance on the run and losing the war. Luke's training was dark and a bit unnerving at times. Luke finding out the horrible truth of who his father was, and ended up beaten and broken both mentally and physically by the end. And then we lose a beloved hero to Jabba the Hut, splitting him up from the other hero's, leaving the movie audience with a sense of defeat and sadness by the time the credits come around.
