Do you think Lucas regrets killing off Darth Maul in TPM ?

Don't know if it matters that much for GL. BUT I do think, Filloni took the chance to weave a lot of his story lines around this iconic villian figure to spice up the story arc of some of his CW and Rebels protagonists. Especially as antagonist in the shadows for Kenobi, Ezra and Asohka. He did not have to build up loads of new villains and just took Dooku, Sheeve and Maul.

To me Maul was a misdirection by Lucas for TPM, in that the hype and trailers featured Maul very much, and that it likely gave the viewer the impression this 'big bad guy' for the whole trilogy... only to try and take the viewer by surprise and kill him off in Episode I. And to introduce more bad guys later. But I do not think this worked so well.

(I think Maul had more to do in the trailers and promos than in the film itself! ;))

It would have been interesting to see Maul somehow resurrected as Grevious for Episode III, maybe? Grevious had no grounding or backstory and was quite an uninteresting villain (for me, anyway).

Though I kind of like that Maul came back in the animated series and also for Solo, maybe we will see more of him in the future too? :)

It was George Lucas who decided to bring back Maul in Clone Wars, not Dave Filoni.

Pretty sure he reused his sequel trilogy ideas for TCW, including bringing back Maul and introducing a teenage protagonist.

Lucas has said that he didn't realize until after the fact, just how popular Darth Maul would become. As such, he had to invent a new lackey for Palpatine to face against Obi-Wan and Anakin...and that lackey became Count Dooku.

George has a really strong history of creating characters, underestimating their appeal, and then regretting killing them off. I think the leaks in regards to him wanting to use him in his version of the sequel trilogy speaks volumes.

I know having Maul in Rebels and Clone Wars raises the “cool factor,” I guess.
However, I am in the minority in thinking that Darth Maul should have stayed dead in The Phantom Menace. Why? Because killing him alone without his master’s help would have been the final “trial” in Kenobi becoming a master. After he slices the guy in half, I stopped looking at Kenobi as the little punk who complained about “pathetic lifeforms” and started seeing him as a steady-headed individual, someone who could train Anakin successfully. Maul being alive diminishes this moment.

I believe Darth Maul had a brother in Clone Wars (been a while since I watched it.) I don’t see why George/Dave could have written the other guy as a major player; perhaps the brother could have tracked down Kenobi to avenge Maul. His design even looked more menacing than Maul.

Yes I agree. But I think he had such a powerful aurora about him that the mystery of maul was something that kept fans asking for more of him and more appearances! So I think he regrets it but it makes it exciting that he’s a rare sight to see !

Plus in Rogue One which takes place between 3 and 4 as we are aware while Darth Maul makes an appearance in a hologram format. Also by the way I'd like to mention how awesome sauce that scene is. If you're referring to just "writing" him off just after one film appearance before anything could become of it---I can see where fans may think that. The fact though that he does appear in TCW and Rogue One can for me at least feel completion because after PM i wanted more but with those 2 additional I feel i want more even then.

Anytime a character has just one film can seem lackluster for future considerations however seeing as how maul is so loved as a baddie in this universe how can their be regrets when he's remembered just by phantom menace existing in that universe alone.

There’s a possibility he corrected a mistake but I honestly feel like he was planning to bring Maul back the entire time. They had a lot for Maul in TCW so I feel as if they were prepared. But it’s honestly 50/50.

Was Lucas envisioning the TCW series during the filming of TPM?

Haven't heard about that either way, but it's interesting to consider.

Woah never considered that. There’s a good chance he might have since the prequels were during TCW and then they made TCW series.
