Do you want Disney to always focus the main story on the Skywalkers?

Characters made it special. Not the name. Write great characters and the money will still come pouring in!

I think what most of you are actually tired of is not the Skywalkers, but the light vs. dark mechanic that has always been in Star Wars. And I agree, if they keep making the saga films revolve around that conflict, it could get real boring and real predictable fast. So how about we keep the Skywalkers, but move away from the constant light vs. dark conflict of Star Wars? I'm surprised that more people aren't talking about this.

My ideal way to move forward with the Skywalker saga after the sequel trilogy would be to bring in a brand new threat, a threat that will bring real devastation to the galaxy. I've always thought that the Yuuzhan Vong were one of the greatest aspects of Legends, they were extremely refreshing because they were simply not another group of darksiders, or another remnant of the Empire.

Disney and Lucasfilm could make an entire trilogy out of them. The biggest and most devastating war the galaxy has ever seen, with both the New Republic and First Order taking up arms against the Yuuzhan Vong, who are bent on conquering the galaxy and killing anyone that gets in there way.

They may already be setting this up, as it's very clear at this point that Snoke originates from beyond the known galaxy, just like the Yuuzhan Vong.

Because the head honcho at Disney gets the true final say.
No matter how powerful and strong Kathleen Kennedy is, she still has to get approval from the top brass.
And if he goes to them with a "no Skywalker" saga film there is no guarantee that she gets approved.

I think Disneys trust in Lucasfilm is big enough that they wont say something like that.
If the movies make enough money at the box office Disney is happy with or without the Skywalkers.

Disney wouldn't let something THAT risky happen with the saga movies. Because the cost of making + marketing has to be worth it.
If there is no Skywalker, Disney would rightfully be allowed to worry it might not hit where it needs to.

Well let me tell ya; As we all have been told, the Saga itself is the story of the Skywalker line...which is what it always has been and always should be. I was hooked in '77 when I say the beginning in the theaters, and when ROTJ came and went in '83, there seemed to be no more in sight...at least in the near future.

When that time passed, I (and my friends) started reading the EU, and while some of my SW geek friends became irretrievably lost in the expanded SW universe, I just couldn't do it. As a Skywalker fan, the EU in the 80's and 90's seemed at times to veer off into some of the weirdest and bizarre landscapes that I'd seen, and it turned me off a bit.....especially with the Vong (and then LFL allowed Chewbacca to be killed), and my interest at those points in time was diminished, personally speaking.

Now with THAT being said, I'm interested in SOME side stories, but they have to relate...have a connection to the saga...like Rogue One, which I loved, BUT character backstories make me a bit uneasy. I have no interest in a Boba Fett flick, as he just never "clicked" with me, and I've just never been interested. The Han Solo movie [groan] I have no interest in...call me a purist, but I just cant buy into the tale, especially if Harrison isn't involved...and "Young Solo"...I just can't do it...regardless of how closely it relates to the saga.

There are some of us here like @DEKKA129 that are in the same boat with this viewpoint because Ford is Solo, and we cringe at the idea of a younger actor trying to sell himself to us as someone that we already know in the SW universe....so nope. Alden Ehrenreich had better be able to pull off the most convincing magic trick ever conceived in this venture, because I....just...can't.

On the OTHER hand, I think that Ewan Mcgregor almost PERFECTLY captured the essence of Obi-wan, and made the character his own, and Alec Guinness would likely be very proud of what Ewan has thus far done with the character, so with that, give me an Obi-Wan movie, but I digress....

I think that it is completely possible (like with R1) that we could see other things, but I feel like this is shaky ground to tread upon because of the possibility of alienating the fan...it has to relate to the saga...almost directly in my opinion, otherwise put it in a book and sell it that way. Other places, people, and things in the SW universe on-screen? Yes absolutely, but if they stray too far from what we know, fans might turn to Star Trek...just kidding! :D

I don't care. What I do like to see is the Skywalker coming to a definitive end (in terms of movie adaptations) in episode IX. However what I would be in for would be tv-series completely revolving around Luke and Rey's new Jedi Order........or whatever they're up to after IX. Movies are an old and condensed medium. Star Wars Narrative could be far more interesting in a tv-series format.

I'm fine with the idea of Star Wars stories that don't necessarily connect to the Skywalker family saga. After all, that original film that got us into all of this almost 40 years ago (I can't believe it's that long ago!) was about Luke, but at that point it had nothing to do with any sort of ongoing Skywalker family soap opera. To me, it was just as much about the Galactic Civil War as anything. And in fact, that was still always the backdrop to the OT for me, right alongside Luke's "hero's journey." IMHO, it didn't really become this big Skywalker family epic until the PT films came along.

So I was always interested in seeing stories about people and events that ran concurrently to Luke's story, but may have occurred halfway across the galaxy and not connected to the existing film stories at all. Or, something like Tales of the Jedi that occurred hundreds or even thousands of years before Luke was born.

In that regard, what I'm more concerned with is the fact that the stand-alone films are too close to the events of the Skywalker saga. I loved Rogue One and thought that they took a real risk in telling that story, as it could have fallen flat on its ass if they'd not gotten it to match up to ANH as well as they did. The risk paid off, IMHO, and I am really looking forward to seeing it again when the blu-ray comes out next month.

But like you, I've no interest whatsoever in the Non-Solo film, and even though I was always a bounty hunter fan (not just Boba Fett, but the whole batch of 'em from ESB - I always dug the character designs, as well as the whole concept of bounty hunting) I just don't have any real interest in a Boba Fett movie either - especially since they've run the "precocious child" version of him so ridiculously far into the ground between AOTC and TCW.

However, if they came up with a story that took place during the Galactic Civil War but had nothing to do with the Rebellion, or was only very tangentially connected to the Rebellion, involving completely new characters, I could see that being a lot of fun. For me it would work because it wouldn't rely on the Skywalker saga at all, nor would it potentially have a negative effect on the Skywalker saga and its characters if it turned out to be a sh*tty movie. If it worked, it would open the GFFA much wider than it's ever been by showing us a part of that world that isn't all about the Skywalkers and the Galactic Civil War (or the Clone Wars, or the First Order threat, or what have you.)

That was always my understanding as to what the live-action SW TV show was intended to be, and at first I thought that's what the stand-alone flicks would be. But now it just looks like the stand-alone movies could degenerate into a string of "origin" movies, and I couldn't be less interested in that.

Let me put it this way, it's not that I don't like the Skywalkers as I love them with all my heart but what I mean is that how unreal it would seem if the only bloodline that could always save the galaxy would be a Skywalker. Look at Earth, just one single planet yet to us it seems big. Now picture that when the RMS Titanic was sinking, Arnold Schwarzenegger maned a boat and saved all the survivors he could. At pearl harbor, a Schwarzenegger sacrificed his life to save dozens of troops. A Schwarzenegger led the military forces that finally defeated Hitler. A Schwarzenegger designed the Trijan Horse. A Schwarzenegger was the first man to land on the moon ect. How sucky history would be if instead of learning about Alexander the Great, Christopher Columbus, Albert Einstein, Harriet Tubman or Shaka Zulu, we would always read that some Schwarzenegger was the one to rise up and save the day?

Now that is talking about one single little planet but now lets look at the SW galaxy that's made up of thousands of planets! It's very unreal the no other people can save the galaxy if it's not the Skywalkers. Would it really bother fans if it were a Kenobi that rose up and saved the galaxy? I really think not. Wouldn't it be awesome to have a trilogy about Jedi from Quinlan Vos's bloodline? Maybe even an Antilles, Fett or Calrissian? What about a trilogy of the daughter of Ahsoka or Aayla Secura? I think it would be awesome to see a main character that was a non-human rise up to the occasion and save the day but if a Skywalker is going to be the one to ALWAYS defeat the Dark Side, I think that there will be a time that even hardcore fans are going to find that repetitive. I think this now even more after seeing RO and observing the potential of a character like Chirrut Imwe. While Chirrut wasn't Force sensitive, it would be mind blowing to have a religious monk that could use the Force be the one to save the galaxy.

When we read about the Sith in the EU SW lore, there were tons of conflicts that readers loved that had nothing to do with the Skywalkers. Awesome characters like Darth Malgus, Bane, Revan, Naga Sadow and Exar Kun had great tales that weren't resolved with a Skywalker so why instead of continuing that tradition, we are going to take the mighty Sith and just stick it into a box that only a Skywalker can open?

I think there's some good reasons presented on all sides of this discussion. I don't feel too strongly one way or another so long as the decisions serve the story well and don't diminish existing characters (oversaturation, character butchering, loss of mystique etc).

Of course that's not to say I'll hold back from criticising them if they make a mess of our saga! :p

Generally I think fans and patrons alike benefit by refraining from limiting artistic vision too much. Trusting artists always carries some risk but some of these could be mitigated through running concepts past professionals/fans, skilled editors, and avoiding the old sycophant echo-chamber!

In my opinion the central storyline of Star Wars is the struggle between the Light and the Dark Sides of the Force. Skywalkers are just agents of the Force in this battle. As long as the main focus is on that, I'd be more than happy.

I think Disney should do this current trilogy and stick with stand alone films in the future. Unless they can find one sole person to really continue Lucas' saga, the studio should simply stick to stand alone films. I suspect it would easier for them.

I see that many pop culture fans are continuing to avoid the terms "good" and "evil" and sticking to color metaphors. As for this struggle, it is one that I cannot see having any winners. It's futile to think there can be a winner. Whatever good thing that happens in the world, there will always be something bad. And vice versa. Even looking at the saga as a whole - stretching back to the Old Republic Era - it seemed as if any time one side triumphs, that triumph does not last forever.

As for sticking with the Skywalkers as the prime protagonists in the saga . . . I don't know. I don't know if I truly care. If Disney/Lucasfilm do decide to simply focus on characters outside the saga, I'm not going to break a sweat over it. I'll always have Episodes I to VI to enjoy.
