Does Rey being 'sold for drinking money' make sense...?

Well I am not sure if you should take this quote literally. I think what Kylo wanted to say that at one point her parents sold her for their own advantage. Doesn't necessarily mean that they sold her for booze. He probably hopes to upset her by using such harsh words so that she would distance herself from people she feels close too. Kylo has nobody and he wants Rey to feel like he does. Like an outcast. He makes his intentions clear when pointing out that she matters to him hoping that Rey will join him and the first order.

Not really. In your opinion and to you. You call it lazy writing because it isn't to your satisfaction. But it doesn't make it lazy. Everything doesn't have to be explained. The force has been a mystery in many ways including Anakin's.

I guess it's lazy writing saying"Oh, it was virgin birth." Kind of silly, imo.

Sometimes I feel that 'Rey being sold for drink money' might be from a certain point of view....while I still expect her parents to be regular people with no special lineage, there is enough wiggle room for some big twist in episode 9 regarding her origins....for instance, Rey might have been kidnapped as a very young child and then sold for booze money by her kidnappers, not her actual parents. It wasn't uncommon for force sensitive children to be kidnapped (Ahsoka was almost kidnapped as a child) and sold off. Or maybe an Oliver Twist like scenario where her real mother died and she was brought up by some uncaring people who finally sold her off for booze.

Does Obi-Wan reaching out 2 Rey make sence (in a vision)? Why reach out 2 her? Stable Boy is ACTIVELY using the Force at age 10ish while Rey needed a download from Kylo at 19.

    Broom Boy seems stronger.

God how i hate this trilogy.

Personally, I don't think the technical points surrounding Rey's servitude are important. Whether she was a slave in name or simply action, what does it matter? Ultimately, even if she was originally sold into slavery, we have no idea if that changed between her childhood and when we meet her in TFA.

"everything doesn't have to be explained". A story's main character has to be explained. Argue all you want, but 99 percent of people agree that a main character that can do any and everything, is boring. Why do you think so many people have trouble writing superman?

No, it doesn't. Nothing must cater to anyone. I could name tons of well loved movies with zero explanation of why this or that happens, yet poeple still love the movie.

Maybe JJ will give you an explanation in 9. I personally don't need one.

73.6 percent of statistics are made up.

It's not like Luke had a complicated backstory. He was the son of a Jedi and with this explanation he was able to blow up the Death Star without computer guidance. He was able to grab a lightsaber without training. Luke traveled to Dagobah without computer navigation. This was all before he was trained by Yoda.

Rey on the flip side is an awakening in the force. So strong is this awakening that Kylo Ren and Snoke both feel it. Snoke surmises that her awakening is a response to the darkness in Kylo Ren. The explanation for Rey's powers aren't birthright like Kylo Ren, but the will of the force.

Edited to add: @Darth Basin The Greatest rated this response "off topic." LOL

Rey parents story is deception of the Dark side.

Rey is to perfect child to be let after 5 years.

Left as a newborn, maybe, but nobody leaves kid with so many talents at years of 5.

Bottom line, even if not loved she was profitable even for junk dealer drunkards ,she can fix things.

    Remember Anakin?
He said he is treated well by Watto, because he can fix things.Watto doesn't give Anakin, despite he has no emotions,he knows Anakin worths much.

So for Rey to be sold at age of 5 her parents should be not just drunkards and junk dealears, and child abusers, but also to stupid to be junk dealers not knowing worth of its own child at age of 5.

    Does not hold.

Pretty consistent writing considering the same writing team has Hux as a main leader of the FO and a complete incompetent moron. Complete incompetent morons rule in this new galaxy while the very capable are sold into, idk, slavery where you can keep stuff and live in AT-ATs and build your own supped up vehicles. Or they give up on life to live off fish and drink milk from huge ugly humanoids. Or they live in debt and are chased from two outlaw groups. Or to become an up and coming star, you need to throw tantrums and act all emo. Or you make grand gestures of knowing everything just to be killed by the very one you said you pretty much owned. Or you get beat up over and over again despite being a captain in cool armor.

I can go on and on, but it's clear that competence and intelligence in the ST is not something to aspire to.

Unless we are told otherwise in the future my head canon is going to be as follows:
    - Rey's father was sterile
    - She was conceived by the force just like Anakin
    - Her father obviously suspected Rey's mother had cheated on him, marriage starts to fall apart, he starts drinking
    - He hates Rey as she is a constant reminder of his wife's infidelity so he finds a way to get rid of her leaving her with Unkar

I have been saying that I would have had no problem with 'Random Rey' if TFA didn't play up something else. The Lightsaber calls to her, Obiwan speaks to her when she grabs the Lightsaber, and Luke's music plays when she forcegrabs the Lightsaber from Kylo. This would be equivalent to watching a Jaws movie and you hear the John Williams theme throughout the movie, and then.....Jaws never appears once!

It's a dumb trick setup in TFA by Disney because they had no plan and let JJ and RJ essentially do their own thing regarding the macro story points. If Rey just said at the beginning of TFA that she was waiting for her family and then we see her with all of these force powers, then it would be the audience fault for concluding she maybe related to Luke, Leia, Obiwan, etc. But when you trick the audience with specific clues that hint at something and then pull the rug out from them, then it's just a silly unplanned ploy.

This is a great post because it sounds and reads just like TFA was as a movie. LOL

Great post! I love this post!

Another great post! I absolutely agree, the ST is pure garbage. I love eps 3 thru 6, and never really felt much for eps 1 and 2, but with the advent of this ST (which imo actually stands for Super Train-wreck) I have been given a new love and appreciation for those films. It's hilariously ironic that completely incompetent morons rule the galaxy in the ST, because completely incompetent morons now write and produce SW lol. It's poetry lol.

You two defined the Essence of backlash about this film.
Even Luke made terrible mistakes,Leia and Han,were horrible parents,.Snoke....old idiot making that mistake after thousand years of.....wisdom.Anakin,Yoda,Obi-wan,made mistakes.

Only one perfect is Rey.Most perfect Force weilder ever, and could be most powefull ever.

Everyone would like to have child like Rey.
That makes those 2 drunkard parents most miserable people in galaxy that ever lived...they are unique!

It's the story choice by Rian Johnson. It's sad you aren't willing to accept the reality of this choice.
I would have no problem with Luke being Darth Vader's son if A New Hope didn't play up something else.

There is a difference between playing up one storyline and leaving it as a cliffhanger to the next movie and the other story is something that evolved in the narrative of ESB.

You don't finish watching ANH and say, "I want to know more about Luke?" That is not the point of the movie, as the narrative wasn't just about who he was as it was only discussed in one scene with Obiwan and Luke at the beginning of the movie. That is why the twist in ESB works, because you didn't see it coming and weren't expecting it.

TFA took a different narrative as it played up Rey's heritage or past the WHOLE movie. The Lightsaber calls out to her, Obiwan talks to her, Luke's music plays when she force grabs the Lightsaber, etc. The narrative of TFA and the next movie relies on YOU wondering about Rey's past because they put certain things in there which makes you interested in it. Nobody was walking out of the theater in 1977 saying, "I want to know more about Luke's past if they make a sequel!" yet most fans walked out in 2015 saying, "Hmmm.. Rey parents could be Luke, Leia, Obiwan, Nobody???"

When I finished TFA I said "I want to know more about Luke." I understand people's obsession with Rey, but that's mostly because of narrative of the OT. Every big reveal in the OT was bloodline. To keep beating that dead horse is just terrible story telling.

Everything else you list connecting Rey to an established character is just wish fulfillment.

Luke's Music => Force Theme... it's plays all the time
Lightsaber => The will of the force
Obi-Wan => Talks to a lot of people

All these are from a certain point of view moments. Rian Johnson decided to take an original route instead of telling us the same story again.

Let's please stop with RJ taking an original route, as this movie has so many winks towards ESB. Just because he pulls the rug out from us on mystery box points doesn't make it original. Heck, the movie 'Wild Things' with Neve Campbell and Matt Dillion does it for 2 hours as nobody is ever portrayed as they seem and you are constantly getting the rug pullled out from you. Does that make it original? No, it's a certain type of storytelling, which I am not a fan of.

RJ essentially disregards everything from TFA and says he is going to make his standalone movie. Heck, even Snoke comments how dumb Ren's mask is, as that is not a shot at JJ? Why didn't Snoke say it last movie when he was wearing it in front of him? This just goes to my point that RJ or JJ should have written the whole trilogy, not both. I think if RJ had done Episode 7 in his style, then Episode 8 wouldn't be as jarring because he would be continuing his narrative. Now JJ takes over for Episode 9 and will take his narrative another way, so we will essentially get 3 Standalone movies in a Trilogy that have zero continuity.
