    The title says it all.

    Watching the oscars right now....

Next Oscars, TFA will be qualified for all categories.

Is being a Disney film a GOOD KARMA for the movie to get more nominations it once had?

Will it get Nominations? Yes. Without a doubt. But in the year 2016 (scary to think that is when next year's Oscars will be) it will be difficult for a movie like Star Wars to get major nominations and win them. The fact that it is being released a week before Christmas, however, is when movies are usually campaigning for the Oscars. So its publicity will help with the academy.

It all depends on the quality and the impact of the movie. Let´s hope is so good it qualifies for some oscars. Let´s also hope it changes the way Special Effects are done and productions start to use more a mix of practical and CGI. It would be great to have the quality and fun of 80´s special effects together with the possibilities we get nowadays.

It'll almost certainly win best special effects, I consider JJ one of the leading experts of blending practical effects with CGI.

Well, probably, but Disney will have to choose which one to push between Avengers and TFA for the technical categories, and they could take away from each other. No matter how good Star Wars is, I think next year looks really crowded and I doubt there will be any major nominations, even if it hits the zeitgeist.

They've nominated special effects driven films in the past couple of years for best picture (District 9, Avatar, Gravity) so yeah, Star Wars has a great chance. The Dec. release date only helps its chances. But the main thing is will it be competing against a super strong lineup though? Time will tell. In regards to the tech nods, well i'm sure it will get a blast ton.

Is there any chance that it won't? It's the return of my childhood, the trilogy we never expected... it has the old heroes... it has new heroes... black stormtroopers... women stormtroopers... and John Williams

    No way this doesn't sweep

Given that the television ratings for this year's Oscars were at their the lowest since 2009's - the year they snubbed WALL-E and The Dark Knight for Best Picture nominations in favor of indie films - I would not be surprised to see if next year, they nominate a mix of more popular movies and indies instead of just indies and one big hit. People aren't going to tune in if they haven't seen any of the movies you've nominated. (On another note, I think it'd probably do them well to expand all of the "Big Six" categories to up to ten nominations apiece, and they definitely need to start making a "top ten" list of potential Best Pictures instead of a diminishing number of candidates.)

So I can totally see The Force Awakens getting nominated for a lot of things. The Academy would be foolish not to nominate John Williams for the zillionth time (and his scores based around blockbusters are more memorable than his scores for serious movies). I can easily see the movie getting a ton of technical award nominations, and winning at least a few. Heck, the movie might even have a shot at being nominated for Best Picture. Winning the award? Probably not. Getting a nomination? Possibly so.

Here's what I think the movie could be nominated for:
    • Best Picture
    • Best Directing
    • Best Original Screenplay
    • Best Original Score
    • Best Sound Editing
    • Best Sound Mixing
    • Best Production Design
    • Best Cinematography
    • Best Makeup And Hairstyling
    • Best Costume Design
    • Best Film Editing
    • Best Visual Effects
My guess would boil down to as many as twelve of the twenty-four awards for nominations. Of those twenty-four, the movie would be eligible to be nominated for sixteen (all of the above, plus the acting nominations, which I doubt the movie will get picked up for - unless the performances transcend "genre movies", like Heath Ledger's win for his role as the Joker in The Dark Knight). It's bound to get one to three awards at the least, and I'm certain that it will be nominated for all of (or almost all of) the technical awards it could be up for.

Sounds like a clean sweep, the late great Heath Ledger deserved his Oscar for his performance as the joker.

Sounds legit. But if you could choose an actor from the cast of TFA to win an Oscar for this movie, who would you think would be worthy enough?

I would say it will be nominated for visual effects, sound editing, sound mixing, original score, film editing, and costume design.

I don't really care about the Oscars...But wouldn't it be badass if Mark Freakin Hamill won an Oscar.

Well we aren't really going to know that until we actually see the performance... Williams, definitely... Abrams is a shoe in...

Alec Guiness got nominated for best supporting actor, but he lost to Jason Robards. Robards gave a great performance and I can accept that. But Annie Hall over Star Wars is still a travesty
