I have seen a few posts saying that the movie is messy, that it's too fast paced and too much is happening. But on the other hand I have also seen a few comments on social media (and maybe a few here too, can't remember) saying that too LITTLE happens in the movie. And that it takes a little too much time for the story to get going. Both are good criticisms if that is the way you felt. I personally liked the plot, and found the pace fitting for the story they are telling (on my second viewing i even came to appreciate Canto Bight, even if it's not the most necessary plot line for the movie.

I have expressed my love for this movie in many threads on the forum lately (I even think it's my new favorite in the saga). But the pace is something that is worth discussing anyway, and if the pace feels off, it can really hurt the experience.
This is my first thread i am starting by the way, so please tell me if I'm doing something wrong.

I fundamentally disagree with the story decisions made for the movie but to be honest I had no trouble at all with the pacing.

Every Star Wars movie is pretty poorly paced.
They all have incredibly dull times that feel like they go on too long.
Even ANH and ESB have this problem.

There was a lot I feel going on but it worked for me. A 2.5 hour movie is pretty long and becomes in danger of dragging scenes on too long. I felt RJ did a good job with the pace and balance of the film even though some scenes were obviously better than others.

I Love It AS IT IS.
I See IT As A STORY Told To Me.

It has less to do with the pacing and more to do with the content.

100% agree, this is also why I'll never have a ranking for those movies...
I love SW but I agree that all movies have their issues as far as pacing is concerned, always that one moment where a deathstick is needed. (Except I'm already home thinking about my life)
The last jedi might not be the best SW movie, but it's the best one for consecutive viewings in my opinion.

I don't think it's unfair to say that this movie tries a little too many things, I probably (who knows) would've felt more emotionally invested in some scenes if they had been given more time. Canto Bight for example, feels like it's taking time away from the "main" stuff and feels a bit pointless, but with a bit/lot more time, could've been great (unlike most, I agree with Finn, Canto Bight IS dope).

I didn't really like Rey's scenes in TFA, but in this one I wouldn't have been mad with more of her on Ach-to.

I do believe it could/should have been 2 movies, Peter Jackson can make 10 out of this.

Yeah, I really felt those 2,5 hours flew by both times I saw it.

Didn't even consider this when I posted, but I agree! As a fan it can be easy to overlook the things that the OT isn't so great at, but I guess there are some pacing issues there as well as in the new movies.

It was well balanced. We got a good share this time.

I really enjoy how Rian edited this film together, it is complex and has a lot of layers to it, a unique voice. As much as I like TFA, it’s very facsimile, standard popcorn fair; TLJ feels more like an actual film to me

It doesn't; TLJ has to encompass many definitive aspects of reality in order for the climax to pay off. If the film wasn't as inclusive, such as Canto Bight, then the resonance of Luke's final fate and the resonance of Rey's connection to Kylo wouldn't be as powerful.

TLJ is about the purity of the periphery being universal, but for that to be the case that means that the universal has to be the periphery

The entire Canto Bight/Codebreaker quest could have been...something else, but it wasn’t necessarily bad. It’s effect on the pace and narrative....wasn’t great. It’s the only reason why I can’t really rate it above TFA. But I still saw it 3 times already because it does a lot for the saga as a whole, even Canto Bight, depending on whether it may pay off in 9.
