Gleeson (IMO) is just going to be the ruthless "Tarkin" of TFA....but not related. He'll probably be a heavy-hitter First Order commanding type, with about as much screen time as Tarkin and mowed down either before EP VIII or by halfway through it.

The attrician rate was largely due to Vader's lack of leniency on failure

Of the villains we know about (Kylo, Snoke, Phasma, Gleeson) it seems that at least one of them will likely die by the end of the movie. My guess is that it would be either Phasma or Gleeson's character, since I think Kylo and Snoke will be important in future films. If Gleeson's character dies in this film, I'm going with the opinion that he's just an evil commander who may "go down with the ship," so to speak, when the good guys win.

(If rumors are true of a major hero character dying, I'm assuming at least one major villain will also die to prevent this film from ending on a total downer).

A major character will be presumed dead... but I think it will be a carbonite maneuver

Is this from a "source", or purely speculation?

There is no "confirmation" of any of it... it is widely rumored that a major character will die, and it is rumored that Ren will kill Solo... howsomever... I believe, if that scene happens at all, he will most likely be presumed dead, it will be revealed he is still alive, and there will be some rescue... ala him being encased in carbonite and carted away...

But... that is speculation based on rumor...

I noticed that Gleeson is rocking those old school sideburns like in A New Hope. Rewatching it recently I noticed most of the Imperial officers had chops and some look like they stepped off the set of Mary Poppins chimney sweeping scene (I know most of you haven't seen it). But I wonder if they will try to have the same old school style in that way, like the officer from Rebels, can't remember his name, who has the bigtime mutten chops. Really wish Jason Isaacs who voiced the Inquistor from season 1 would be an officer, he has the perfect look and cold demeanor needed for this role.

Out of curiosity, but are you speaking of the sideburns that just go down to the bottom of the ears? I think those have become stylish again in the past couple years as the leaked still I've seen of Gleeson in character doesn't look out of the ordinary at all, tame even. I would love for a return to those big chops just like some of the folks in the OT and the guy from Rebels. They just... recall the 1800s when beards and gigantic chops seemed to be almost expected of commanders.

Really haven't noticed anyone bringing back the side burns, but I'm not exactly a fashion expert.

Someone probably pointed this out in the preceding four-billion pages, but DG seems - and looks - pretty young for an officer of presumably such high rank.

No idea if it means anything.

Anyone think Gleeson will be a Tarkin? Maybe that is the reason for his swift promotion.

You are right - is he too young to be an important leader....maybe a prominent son, maybe one of SnorklĀ“s dogs, like Kylo....

This would lead to an absolutely epic and iconic SW scene in which a displeased Kylo tries to Force strangle the General only for the General to Force strangle him right back.

Or on a more serious note, where Kylo tries to strangle some incompetent junior officer only for the General to wave a finger, releasing the man. That'd be cool, too.

(Also, I'm hoping the whole Luke's son thing is real. It's the one rumor I've liked.)

Makes sense, and the nepotism/family name thing would fit in with the medieval/war-torn Europe vibe going on. If they can develop that into an interesting plotline that affects the story, then personally I'd be all for it. (Like, maybe the Tarkins are a super-connected famous military-industrial complex family.)

On the other hand, having him be a Tarkin purely for the sake of the name is unnecessary fan-service and univer-shrinkage. And JJ Abrams has proven he can stoop that low with the whole 'not Khan' fiasco.
