It's stated that they're superior to the storm troopers in the OT. Snoke is considering making a clone army. They're not better than clone troopers.

Well, in his last shot in TLJ Hux looks like a man who has seen enough in one day to consider handing in a resignation, so... :p

In all seriousness, though, I have nothing against this interpretation of Hux. I find him much more interesting to watch than if he was a stereotypical Tarkin-type character (not saying I don't like Tarkin, but we don't need a copy). I actually consider Hux as a character saved, because IMO he was quite boring in TFA.

The comedy didn’t work. It just made the character seem like a bafoon.

    Which he very much is.

If Domhnall is happy with Hux - punching bag direction, then I'm happy as well. I have very few problems with TLJ and making fun of Hux is definitely not one of them.

    Yup
He's the bastard son of an Imperial officer who was used by Snoke to do his bidding since he could easily manipulate him.....just like Ren.
So yeah, he's a buffoon because he's trying so hard to be what he isn't. He's not Tarkin but he wants to be. It's like having to take a reality star and failed businessman serious as a political leader. Everything just seems comical.

his character no longer has any credibilty in my eyes. neither does snoke or the first order if they would put a clown in charge of their army.

One of the things I liked so much about Hux in E7 was how well Gleeson did with the character, specifically when he gives his speech to the assembled masses prior to firing SKB. Gleeson does a great job showing how insane and megalomaniacal this character is.

His character should not be reduced to a walking punch line. For some reason, E8 went in that direction.

And there's the problem. When the highest ranking member of the opposing military force is a complete buffoon, it ruins tension within the movie.

It is tough to view the antagonists as true threats when they are so incompetent. It works in Spaceballs, not so much in Star Wars.

The film directly addresses why Snoke has Hux in such a position.

It's fine to not like the story decision, but to ask a targetted question that the filmmakers already took the time to answer, doesn't make sense.

Honestly, I never understood why people think Hux is so comedic. There's the scene in the beginning of the film with Poe, but that's really about it.

Overacted maybe? Though, given his backstory, the inept yet intense way he's portrayed could make sense.

Domhnall Gleeson is just getting on with his job and being incredibly gracious about it. Very few actors can afford to do a Mark Hamill and publically complain about the direction their character is taking...

I'll tell ya' that I was personally amused with the "Poe-Hux phone prank" at the beginning, but I honestly think that it's going to get pretty serious in IX because Kylo has taken the throne...and those two hate each other ANYWAY, so I envision some serious tension...seriously...and in all seriousness! :)

Agreed. The First Order was actually always a lot more "cartoonishly evil" than the Empire. Bigger super weapons, badder stormtroopers, larger ships, an extravagent gold-clad Supreme Leader, giant red banners... the First Order traded in the cold military efficiency of the Empire for a much more flamboyant approach.

And that makes sense. Look at how Hux was raised- poor kid was basically raised to torture other kids. That's definitely not like how the Imperial cadets were groomed. The First Order makes no hide of its evil.

It was great seeing Hux going through the comedy misery from the first 5 mins of the movie onwards.

Comedic? I hope not. I only laughed when Kylo "disagreed" with him in the shuttle at the end of the movie. Poe-Hux opening was an utter disappointment and a total parody of the suppousedly powerful and evil FO. How can FO be taken seriously when its top military commander is an idiot?

And the deleted scene with Rose biting his finger...

Let's say I'm happy it was deleted.
