SPECULATION "Don't be afraid, I feel it too."

Ben should have felt lonely in his childhood.

 

At first I was going to say abandonment, but after rewatching that scene I would say fear. "Don't be afraid, I feel it to." Rey was feeling fear.
Rey feels Kylo's fear, fear that he will never be as strong as Darth Vader.

 

I've gone back and forth about this line. It's one that I hope will become clearer in future movies as we learn what Rey and Kylo Ren might have in common.

For now, I think it means sensitivity to/ability to utilize/strength in the Force. (She is a novice at it and so she feels fear.)

(Next week I'll probably have a different theory. )

Another idea I've toyed with is that Kylo Ren is speaking about being aware of common destiny.

As the primary protagonist and antagonist in the ST, Kylo Ren and Rey are going to be interconnected, possibly as long as they're both alive. At this point Kylo Ren is speaking from a position of power (which would explain his [over]confident tone) to Rey, who's currently in a frightening and vulnerable position. She doesn't know--yet--that she has the ability to kick his butt (twice)!

for a long time i thought he was referring to the pain of having her mind breached (because their encounter on Takodana in the book is described as painful).

now, like @Choose Light, i'm more inclined to believe he's talking less about pain and more about the weirdness of doorway he's cranking open between their minds. and i think this is what clues Rey in that if he can walk through that door into her head, then she can walk into his.

 

This takes it one step further than I was thinking re: Force awareness, to the specific arena of using the Force to muck around in each other's heads. (It ends up being pretty scary for both of them, in different ways.) I like it!

And maybe because she's a fellow Force user, it's a different enough experience from Poe for KR that he comments on it? Could he be feeling some kind of weird counter-flow at this point, even though he doesn't know she's going to kick the door down into his mind too?

 

it begs the question whether by "going easy" on her, he deliberately let her in (even if unconsciously), because yes, this didn't seem to be an issue with Poe.
but whether he suspects she's FS is up for debate too....

 

Good point--it's possible he doesn't know she's FS at this point. He has already been inside her head though, so I assumed that he was aware (and just assumed he was far stronger and could handle anything--seems to be his MO). I also assumed that since he saw the island he realized it was a Force vision/dream--but then again, maybe it wasn't, and he didn't.

?? Maybe this speaks to the OP ("Don't be afraid. I feel it too")? They both feel Force tingles? And "adversaries again" as if in that instant they weren't somehow?
EDIT: OK, darn it, is this a "Force bond"? Is this what one looks like?

TBH, I don't see anything in either actor at that point that indicates outwardly this emotion of surprise mentioned in the script. Maybe this part was "directed" out?

 

I'd go for number 3.

they do eyeball each other a lot, but yeah, the "don't worry, i feel it too" seems to have perhaps replaced the tingles (or whatever).
since this line isn't in the script or the book, it's possible they chose to go with verbalizing the feeling rather than acting it.
though i would add that whatever he feels, he's not afraid of it, so he's ahead of the game with her.

oh that's funny ~ i mis-remembered. it's definitely not in the book. thank you for the clarification!

the other thing they changed about this scene from the descriptions in the script and book is that he never actually touches her.
i don't know if his putting his hands on her was just considered too much? it's an interesting choice.

 

Yes, the not touching thing seems to have been a directorial choice. Does that behind-the-scenes featurette cover any of that? I can't remember.

it does seem that great care was taken with the scene particularly: so they were definitely going for something ~ we're just not sure exactly what.
