People have strong opinions about The Last Jedi. There are people who love, like, and hate it. So far the movie is beating expectations at the box office. It's clear people don't like the film. Just look around this forum or look at any of the online polls.

However, the real question is how many people don't like the film?

We can tell from online polls that there are people who don't like the film, but it's not a good measure of how many people disliked it.

Movie studios are in the business to make money. So they're desperate to know what people like. So there are scientific polls they use to know what people like and what people don't like. Studios spend a lot of money for companies like comScore to give them an accurate assessment what people think about a film.

BirthDeathMovies has a great article explaining the issues with online polls and how they can't really be trusted.

How does The Last Jedi compare to Rogue One and The Force Awakens?

So there you have it. The true measure of what people who have seen The Last Jedi think about the film.

Yes, there are millions of people who don't like the film, but it's less than 11% of the audience. They're good at voting in online polls though!

Only thing that concerns me about the backlash is the possibility of it wavering LFL's confidence in Rian Johnson's all-new trilogy. That's a project I really want to see come to fruition, even more so now after seeing TLJ.

    1,000 people poll is nice.....I'll take 170,000+

Using the same criteria as Rotten Tomatoes for Audience Score of "Liked the movie" i.e. 3.5/5 or higher....

Applying to IMDB, which would be 7/10 on their scale...

    74.1% "Liked" of 170,926 votes...

with 60.3% giving an 8/10 or higher....

    WIth 7-10 being "Liked" = 126,636

    With 1-4 being "Hated" = 22,185

There's no reason to be concerned. The film is doing great. That's why these studios pay to for these audience studies.

I still have my VHS tapes of the OT and the PT so I’m not fussed.

George Lucas the creator said the Star Wars saga will always be about the rise and fall of Anakin. Only six movies exist in offical canon.

Ok then if you want to look at IMDB TLJ is ROTS level a high 7. While TORJ is at 8.9 leagues above TLJ.

So sure it means something in relation to other Star Wars films.

Rotten Tomatoes just takes it a step further and shows most people thought it was a crap film altogether not just a bad Star Wars movie.

Yeah so what if he did? Without George Star Wars wouldn’t exist. And he donated most of the profit to charity anyway.

He probably did this to show that no one can do a better job than him despite the backlash.

The ability of sour fans on Rotten tomatoes is insignificant next to the power of the force.

I'm not talking about other movie ratings, attempt to remain on point.

The point being there ARE other polls that do NOT show what Rotten Tomato's Audience Score shows.

Sorry that the 173,380 people of the IMDB poll do not measure up to you.

Insignificant amount compared to the people who saw the movie.

Much easier to please the masses and casuals than true fans, so I’m not suprised that many likely.

The backlash from the true fans who have a comprehensive understanding is what I’m interested in.

Just look on here all threads with several pages dedicated to hating on the movie.

Why didn’t TFA get this crap user score then on RT if anyone can manipulate the rating system so easily?
    --- Double Post Merged, Dec 22, 2017, Original Post Date: Dec 22, 2017 ---
So what’s your point again? Rotten Tomatoes user score shows it being a crap movie and that the IMDB score shows it being a crap Star Wars movie?

    Okay then lol
    --- Double Post Merged, Dec 22, 2017 ---
Not really. It’s basic primary school maths. You don’t need a uni stats course to understand this basic graph.

This is the part of fandom that's toxic. It's not enough to simply have an opinion about the film. Nope, your opinion has to be superior to other people because you're a "true fan" who has a "comprehensive understanding" of whatever.

Uhhh....there are MORE people who have voted on IMDB than Rotten Tomatoes.

Following your logic it would seem that Rotten Tomatoes is even less significant than IMDB then.

I was 13 yrs old in 1977 when I saw the original, non-numbered movie. So don't lump me in your "masses and casuals".

But it's been great talking to you, have a nice weekend!

Can you explain how it follows from pure statistical inference (without making any assumptions on certain premises), that the conclusion that "TLJ is a great movie!" follows? :)

I can tell you that I was not a fan of the movie, and I would be very much happy to provide reasons as to why it is a failure (not from a statistical point of view, but from a literary point of view).

On a side note, polling upon immediately exiting the theater can actually be unreliable. A person might feel pressured to answer a certain way when he is presented with a poll upon exiting. They may also have been in a state of confusion where they are still trying to parse what they saw. I do not know if many here are aware of this person Angry Joe on YouTube, but his first reaction after seeing the movie was one of confusion. But if you go and see his analysis sometime afterward, he pretty much has a very negative opinion of the movie.

An online poll is never a good way to measure public sentiment. It's impossible to control the sample to know if it matches a cross sample of a typical movie audience member. If you can't control the sample it's easy for the sample to oversample certain opinions.

This is why studios pay big money for accurate polls. If it were easy then they'd just take the online polls.
Is it really that surprising? That's what's feeding the entire online polling phenomenon. It's not enough to dislike the film. For some people they have to convince others than their opinion is inferior.
