I believe we already have a similar thread about the same topic, anyways I would love to see Tom Hiddleston as Ransolm Casterfo and Sebastian Stan to play a younger version of Luke Skywalker.

    This.

Ethan Hawke also wants a part in SW. I like Ethan Hawke. So I'm going for him here.

Physical work load, man. Sebastian Stan is much better suited for this.

What? Go watch all the Captain America movies (especially the first two) or look at the TV series Kings. This man is Mark's younger "twin".

Kyle MacLachlan. Cate Blanchett. And a very unrealistic one - David Lynch. I would pay A LOT of money to hear this voice in Star Wars:

For some reason in Star Wars I'm not a fan of seeing actors/actresses I already know as new characters. It sort of takes me out of it (just a little) when I'm like "Oh look, it's so-and-so from whatever". I prefer it when the actor/actress is unknown or at least unknown to me. And most of them have been. One notable exception is Donald Glover, I knew him but he was perfect for the role and disappeared into it. But in the same film I couldn't get over the fact that Beckett was Woody Harrelson. I guess it just depends on the role and the person playing it. It would be hard to cast somebody without knowing the role and whether it would be right for them, I'd rather see the right people in the role than people I like thrown in the franchise just because I like their other work and seeing them in a Star Wars movie would give me a few seconds of recognition-excitement.

Yeah, especially Dern. Del Toro at least created a character that didn't just feel like Benicio In Space... Holdo was just Laura Dern with purple hair. Probably my least favorite bit of Star Wars casting ever.

This is a complaint that I've never understood. Isn't it a job of an actor to embody different characters in different plays, films or shows? Sure, Laura Dern is a known actress but how is her presence more distracting in The Last Jedi than in Big Little Lies or Certain Women? Star Wars is a series of films. Why should they be treated in terms of casting dfferently from others?

The problem was that I didn't think Dern or Harrelson embodied a DIFFERENT character, they just played the same character I've seen them play before. Taking that same character and putting them in a fantasy set in a galaxy far, far away is lazy and sometimes distracting.

Did they, though? I've seen a fair share of movies with Laura Dern and Benicio del Toro in them and I wouldn't say Holdo or DJ resemble that much any of their previous characters. The only character that I can sort of compare to Holdo is Diane from Twin Peaks, but except for a tough attitude and a distinctive sense of style there isn't really that much that they have in common.

I didn't say DJ resembled any character of Del Toro's I'd seen, I said I didn't mind him too much as I felt he created a character that wasn't just "Benicio In Space". Holdo was just Laura Dern in space to me though. Besides the aforementioned tough attitude and distinctive sense of style I didn't think there was really anything to the character.

So, who is Laura Dern to you and why do you feel Holdo is so similar to the actress who plays her?

It would seem to me you're a big Laura Dern fan who doesn't take kindly to a contrary opinion on the subject. To me Laura Dern is somebody I don't care enough about to get involved in a Laura Dern debate. If it makes you feel any better I'm not entirely blaming Laura Dern, perhaps if there had been more to the character I would have thought of her as Holdo and not just Laura Dern with purple hair. Holdo was by design intended to mislead the audience to set up a plot twist (at which point her personality seems to change from night to day), and that sort of got in the way of development in my opinion. The character had no depth or flavor and as a result she was just Laura Dern to me. With the character lacking any personality I was just left staring at the actress who played her. I get it, you disagree, so we'll just have to agree to do so.

It's never been about Laura Dern. It was about the idea of being bothered by seeing a known actor playing a role in "Star Wars." This post gives me insight into why inclusion of Laura Dern bothered you. Now I know. Thank you. Of course, we can discuss what was Holdo's poin in TLJ and I could of course start talking about how Holdo's character is so much more than just a plot device and essential part of Poe's arc, but that was not the topic. Once again, thank you for your insight. :)

Sorry, it seemed like Laura Dern was your point of contention as you didn't have a problem with me saying the same thing about Woody Harrelson who was my original example. Somebody else brought up Laura Dern but it was the same thing to me. And yes Holdo is an essential part of Poe's arc, but that's still Holdo serving as a plot device and not being a great character in her own right. As for this insight... I think I know where you're going with that but I SINCERELY hope I'm wrong.

Holdo... Vos.... DJ... we are in SW movies, and they all were SOOOOOOOO human. :(
A Twi'Lek Laura Dern, an Aqualish Del Toro, a Weekay Harrelson would (perhaps?) have been much more enjoyable.

(note. slightly off topic, but VERY important) I want to congratulate you both @NunbNuts and @Pawek_13 for the great level of understanding, tolerance and open-mind you showed in your discussion above.

    Great thread

Of the heartthrob newcomers, definitely Noah Centineo, such a understated charisma, good looks and brilliant voice!

I second Ethan Hawke. He would be a mean wacky Jedi or a “drunk junk trader resurrected from a pauper’ grave in the Jakku desert” ;). Chiwetel Ejiofor on this same bracket. He could be a magnificent underworld baddy or a charismatic rebel veteran.

Fist on the list of underrated underused actors is Kevin Kline, surprisingly, because he’s just awesome. Great sense of drama and comedy.

And what about Sygourne Weaver? She can play anything and without much Leia they are in need of some lady veteran with gravitas, in the Resistance and the FO equally. And of course extremely versatile yet underused British actress Nina Sosanya.

    John Malkovich

hero, villain, psychopath killer, comedian.. blockbusters, spoofs, historical dramas - the guy smashes everything. I think he might be the least type-casted actor i can think of.
