yeah, i feel like it will be just another action movie remake. Still, we can hope, and that was a nice sandworm.

Agreed. I wouldn't worry about it being generic or too action movie with his hand at the wheel

    :(:(:(

I’m not surprised by the delay. But the length ( nearly a year ) does seam a long time although I guess with everything else getting delayed there trying to find a nice window for it to open in

Agreed and agreed. I have a feeling that a lot of movies that want to release in early-2021 will be moved to later that year, and Dune simply wants to get ahead of the competitors it can.

Yes! I am sad / not sad. It is a little sad in the abstract, but I want to see this movie on a huge screen, and delaying it makes that more likely. A year is fine. They’ve likely seen all the other films being delayed then having to delay the delay. I actually prefer an October release anyway.

Fingers crossed we can all go see it in a post-COVID-19 world.

I guess I will repeat my question in this forum:

Will I be able to understand this movie without reading the books?

Because the Lynch version I was completely lost! I love the visuals: sets and costumes, but the story...

Just to let you know that I loved most of the Villeneuve's movies and this one also looks beautiful.

Before seeing the movie, I can only guess. Lynch's version was easy to get lost in (it's Lynch, after all, and even though he's one of my fav directors he isn't known for his clarity).

I will say that even the original novel requires quite a bit of attention from the audience. It's a really in-depth world, on the level of something like Lord of the Rings. But it repays your investment massively. It's an amazing story and an amazing novel, and so far this upcoming movie looks like an incredible adaptation.

The DV version is TRUE to the book and was written in such a way as to allow those who have never read the books to at least have a grasp of what is transpiring and why. This comes from months of researching this movie.

Yes, you should have no problem following the Dune 2021 movie. There is no reason why the story should be as impenetrable as Lynch made it; actually, the story is rather simple and straight forward... The story's biggest plot twist is even revealed/spoiled before it takes place (well, in the book at least)! There are some high-brow concept musings (i.e. world-building) and a bit of internal philosophizing, but nothing that a master filmmaker like Villeneuve can't handle easily enough. The "heavy stuff" is perhaps akin to the Force expositions in TESB and certainly more accessible than Arrival (which isn't particularly difficult, either). Heck, even most MCU movies have more complicated stories and settings than Dune!

I'm not certain exactly how much artistic liberty Villeneuve has taken with the story, though... There are scenes in the trailers (battle scenes, mostly) that I don't immediately recognize from the book, but I assume they've just played up some stuff that goes on between the lines/backstage in the book, and placed central characters in the thick of it (you know, how films always do when adapting a sprawling book story). Also, there is at least one major character missing/un-cast (he'll show up in the second one, I assume), and another central character has been swapped from male to female (a fantastic choice, if you ask me). Furthermore, if you've seen and remember the Lynch Dune, then you're going to recognize a LOT of scenes in the Villeneuve one (based on the trailer). "The Box"-scene looks to be pretty identical, and "Gurney training Paul"-scene even uses the same camera angles as Lynch did. Other scenes, presumably, will not be. The biggest difference, I dare venture, is the portrayal of Baron Vladimir Harkonnen... he was AWFUL in Lynch Dune, but seems very interesting from what we can gather from the Dune 2021 trailers.

In short, there's no reason why you should have any problem following Dune 2021 (or indeed the book) :) They have made the movie to be accessible to the masses.

Edit: Just in case people don't realize it, this film covers only roughly 1/2 of the Dune book, which should give Villeneuve enough room to tell the story clearly and excitingly without cutting any corners.

I believe the film ends with a big storm... ;-)

Whilst I can get why some don’t like it or connect with it, I really don’t understand a lot of the criticism of or befuddlement with the Lynch version (apart from the director’s own problem with not having the control he wanted), I have always loved it, and never found particularly difficult to understand. Super-excited for Villeneuve’s take on Dune though! I really hope it is successful enough that we get part two.
