Things are actually looking good, as Dune has made over $100 million in the European market alone, with both US & China (no idea how it will perform there) to come; and that is on a $160 million budget :)

Right. But from what I'm hearing is that it has to gross 450 to have a sequel approved.

I have seen nothing to that effect myself, (which doesn't mean it isn't true), but the film is likely to easily make a few hundred million in the US, and Canada is gonna contribute majorly, too. Actually, Warner Bros. has stated that they're not too concerned about the box office performance as long as it does well on HBO Max, so a good theater run anyway is surelly a good sign! :)

9/10. It's amazing. It was thrilling, had great action, but it was also funny and kinda scary during certain parts.
This is how movies should be made.

It's doing pretty good in Europe so far. Fingers crossed it's the same for the US.

& that doesn’t include the U.K. market so hopefully it coming out after Bond will help to bump up it’s takings.

Oh, you guys aren't seeing Dune either? That, in a way, makes the box office thing even better :) To be honest, though, I half-think that most of the viewings thus far has been in French market, as Villeneuve is quite popular there

Question. They don't show a guild navigator at all correct?

    Like in the book,
the Guild Navigators are not shown. Except, there are some dudes in one early scene who're wearing white "space suits" bathing in something orange floating behind of their visors. I kind of assumed that these guys represented guilders (if not actually navigators).

We don't know, but I assume they're just the regular dudes; bankers and the like.

Interestingly, there's an "on screen" navigator in Dune Messiah.

I hope there are tremendous differences compared with the second half of the book and Part 2 of the movie. The second half of the first book doesn't seem to be very exciting, it actually sounds rather bad.

Having a different take for the second movie would also be kinda interesting for the people who read the book.

Um, the second half of the Dune is novel is the best part! That's where all the culture stuff comes in; it's pretty amazing.

Well. Dune enthusiasts definitely can't complain about Villeneuve sticking to the book.
Plus I'm seeing ev-er-y-where reviews of what an awesome movie it is, navigator or no navigator. In a Villeneuve interview he spoke of approving a design of a navigator but was reluctant to put it in the movie. Staying true the source material. I would still like to see that approved design in part two.

That design might VERY WELL show up in Part 3, if Villeneuve gets to make this thing into a trilogy that includes Dune Messiah!

That said, just to play Devil's Advocate, here:
there're several deviations from the book in this movie. Lots of dropped scenes, for instance (political stuff), and the focus is much more character driven. Chani has a MUCH bigger role in Part 1, compared to the same material in the book, and Dr. Kynes is a woman in this one (which, IMHO, is a great choice). There's a weird background creature in one scene that nobody understands (seriously, wtf?). And other stuff beside. But that is the nature of adapting a story from one medium (written) to another (film).

Yes, I saw that one but I have trouble believing they put in a minor element of Metabarons and/or Jodorowsky's spectacularly failed Dune effort into the new Dune film. If that is actually the case then I can't for the life of me understand why. Another explanation is a "Dog Chair" from the later books, but the thing bears no resemblance to those. I half expect it might be a Kevin J. Anderson thing (he was a creative consultant on the film), a nod to one of the many spinoff-books that KJA & Frank Herbert's son, Brian, wrote? But I have no idea... I'm looking forward to seeing the movie with commentaries and also any behind-the-scenes features we might eventually get, 'cause that thing was... odd.

Man, I'll be busy most of the weekend, and can't watch until Sunday at the earliest.

(I realize that's not too long after, but I've become so used to streaming stuff right as it comes out at this point)
