I mention this in another thread, but I'm curious as to why Edgar Wright was on set.

JJ obviously has no problem letting fellow directors who he is buddies with come check things out ala Kevin Smith.

But, Edgar is gonna have a bit of free time after his next project following the demise of his vision for Ant-Man...

So, I'm curious if he's being considered for Episode IX... he would be a very interesting choice.

I've been thinking the same thing . There was a photo posted a while back of Wright's and JJ's hands, saying something like "were getting married", and there was also the photo of him in the background, so he's definitely going to be involved in Star Wars in some capacity. He's a good writer, but I think he'll definitely be directing something, hopefully one of the sequels rather than a spin-off, but either would be fine with me.

I'd rather he do a spin-off than Ep IX honestly. If they hand him the reins to the end of the new trilogy, he will find himself in a similar spot as he was on Ant-Man. In a conflict between the needs of the franchise and his own artistic vision. Now, if he takes a spin-off, he's far more likely to be allowed to do his own thing.

From the sound of "Red Five" he'd be a spot-on choice. I wonder what Red Five is about anyways...

Yeah, I know it was Luke's call sign for him and his X-Wing. But... what if it's just a clever code name...?

Could it actually be about 5 Jedi?

Remember Zack Snyder was rumored to be up to direct a spin-off based loosely around Seven Samurai.

    Think about it.

I hope to see Edgar Wright direct something Star Wars related, but on the subject of Episode IX, is it possible to see JJ Abrams back? I know that the shooting schedule prohibits directors doing two back-to-back films, but there's going to be quite a while between 7 and 9. Has JJ or anyone else mentioned anything about him not directing another film if SW7 ends up as great as we all hope?

It's possible, but I feel like JJ wants to share this universe with other filmmakers who were inspired by it as he was. I think he is especially trying to involve the younger filmmakers in between their 20s and early to mid 40s that grew up with an obvious Original SW Trilogy influence.

I'm still holding out for Spielberg directing one of the trilogy films. I hope it is IX. He was always rumored to be doing one of the prequels, but I don't blame him for passingJoining the action!

I would love to see a Steven Spielberg Star Wars film, but at this point in his career I can't see him jumping into the middle of someone else's franchise, especially since his good friend GL won't be part of it, at least not a major part. Still, it would be an amazing thing if he did decide to do one.

I highly doubt it. Time for a new generation of directors to take the reigns on something they grew up with and love passionately.

Alphonso Cuaron for episode 9! Children of Men was some of the best world building I've seen and he saved the Harry Potter series with Prisoner of Azkaban (well not the whole series, just that one film really).

I've said this several times on the forums but I don't think Disney would allow JJ to get away if E7 breaks all the records I think it will break. They will WANT him back direly and I could see KK going to him and pulling another Jedi mind trick, "Please direct Episode IX. You want to direct Episode IX." LOL

[wishful thinking]That said, I also think David Fincher would be great since Episode IX will end on a dark note setting up the next trilogy.[/wishful thinking]

Personally I think there should be a different director for each of the sequel trilogy... IMO George Lucas should be the only director to have multiple episodes under his direction.

    Episode I: George Lucas
    Episode II: George Lucas
    Episode III: George Lucas
    Episode IV: George Lucas
    Episode V: Irvin Kershiner
    Episode VI: Richard Marquand
    Episode VII: J.J. Abrams
    Episode VIII: Rian Johnson
    Episode IX: Brad Bird

End the saga as a "trilogy of trilogies". Lock the saga in the vault for a decade then reboot the entire Skywalker saga... who knows...

After 1-9 I would rather they just spin off and/or drop the Episodes numbering. IMO it will be cool for star wars to end @ 9 episodes. I don't mind and I will be in line for the midnight showings of any and all the spin off movies. And yeah, I hope they never reboot Star Wars. But it's something I could see Disney doing, maybe not (hopefully not) in my lifetime but sometime :(

Agreed. Even if JJ does a phenomenal job on 7, it is unlikely he will be able to reproduce the same result on 8 or even 9. There would be a level of over confidence. Better to give someone new the pressure. It's why a lot of sequels suck (same director), and why ESB was a success (different director).
