SPECULATION Editing James Earl Jones' Voice in Rogue One?

Greetings, all. Something that's been on my mind recently to some degree is what exactly Darth Vader is going to sound like in Rogue One. We know James Earl Jones is back, which is phenomenal news, but there are a few factors to consider that may ultimately change the way he could sound within the film itself. For example:

    • His voice was modulated somewhat differently between A New Hope and The Empire Strikes Back; in the latter (and Ep. 6 and Ep. 3), it sounds just slightly "deeper" and electronically augmented
    • His voice sounds a bit different in Rebels than in any of the movies. Whether it's due to the passage of time on his voice (after all, the man is 85, and voices do change), or due to different modulating methods in Rebels, the voice sounds more directly like James Earl Jones, with as little editing as possible, in the show.
    • Rogue One takes place very near A New Hope, as far as we know, which would suggest as much continuity with A New Hope as possible.
So, all that is to say this: Jones sounds one way in Ep. IV, one way in Episodes V, VI, and III, and one way in Rebels. They're all awesome and unmistakably Vader, but they all have differences. With that in mind, will Vader in Rogue One sound more like Jones' recent work on Rebels, or will they try to make it match up more closely with how he sounded in the OT (particularly A New Hope)? Discuss. :)

I think his voice will be fine as is for R1. He has been knocking it out of the ballpark in rebels. The TK's in R1 are a little different than they are in ANH, and I imagine that Vader's costume will have some differences as well. A slightly older voice from the origonal actor is no issue to me.

I think his voice will be fine as well, he sounded great in the rebels series & will in R1.

"Vader's costume will have some differences as well" - Hmm, there's a point I hadn't considered. What if changes in Vader's suit can be given as the explanation for subtle alterations in his voice at different times?

I agree. It's a small issue in the first place. Only 3 months left to see (or hear, as the case may be). Unless we get a Vader line in a trailer between now and the release. But that seems unlikely to me.

They could probably augment his voice to sound just like ANH especially with someone like Ben Burtt involved .

If you say so, he has to get a line & JEL can do it.

Yes, but unless I'm mistaken, Ben Burtt isn't working on Star Wars these days. He wasn't involved with The Force Awakens, at any rate. Matthew Wood did the Vader-voice stuff in Rebels, according to Dave Filoni.

If I'm wrong, please correct me, someone. ;)

I thought he was a consultant on TFA but with something as important as Rogue One I doubt they wouldn't bring him back.

Ha, guess I edited my post too late for your response, but see above: Matthew Wood did the Vader-modulating in Rebels. So you're right, they could get Ben Burtt onboard, but Matthew Wood did work on The Force Awakens, and according to Wikipedia, he worked on Rogue One, too. So my guess? Vader will probably sound just like his Rebels-self in Rogue One.

Which may mean the end of this discussion. lol. But at the same time, if they worked like they did to replicate Vader's Ep. IV appearance, they may do the same with the voice.

I'm sure they would have Ben at least guiding Mathew especially if this movie is that close to ANH .

I thought Burtt was still involved with SW and Indy, no? In any event, i'm sure they'll make JEJ sound just like the Vader we know and love. Of course, no matter what, there will always be a small population of fandom who hate it.

The voice differences, in my mind, I attribute it to advances in the technology. Now whether they meant to do it that way or not, Idk. But as far as continuity goes, it needs to sound as close to Vader from ANH as possible. We all know if it doesn't then the fans that like to nit pick will be out in full force.

Edit: @tm0910196 I pulled this from the OFFICIAL artical "Master Filmaking Team Announced For Episode VII" on Starwars.com

sound designer Ben Burtt (Lincoln, Wall-E, Star Wars: Episodes I-VI),

Yeah, I guess they can do that. By the end of Rebels Season 2, let's remember Ahsoka damaged his mask in Malachor, and when he calls her name you can hear a mix of Anakin's and Vader's voice:

That's because his actual voice was "exposed", right? Not all of it was being filtered through the modulator.

Yes, so maybe they can say they had to replace the whole mask and the modulator would have changed as well, even if it was not totally damaged.
