Makeup + lighting. I really do not think they'd try digital deaging to make a a twenty-something guy appear three years younger.

Really?! I thought it was just makeup.

PS. On the blooper reel Mark on Crait set looks the same as in the film.

I wasn't really bothered by Tarkin but using CGI for young Leia I thought was unnecessary. The actress that they used could of pulled off a young Leia without cgi.

I had a funny feeling today. I saw a random ANH clip with Han and - being in a Solo mode after the viewing yesterday - my mind went: "hey, that's totally the character from the new film." You know what I mean? :p I managed to see some Alden in Harrison's Han, rather than looking for Harrison in Alden (the latter is something I taught myself not to thing about at all). It's the same thing, after all!

Anyway, I love Alden's performance. He did a great job. Nobody's ever going to beat Harrison, but I'm happy with the new incarnation of the character.

    Period.

Yup. Alden is definitely the best part of the movie. I totally buy him as a young Han Solo. I think the acting coach stuff was vastly amplified.

Under a different direction, story and setting, I'd be very interested in seeing Alden in a Solo sequel. But it has to be very different, similar to how Thor: Ragnarok was very different from Thor 1 and 2.

He did a good job, but in many scenes, i tried more to look Harrison doing some scenes than him.

OK, I understand now. I can understand how some people cannot disconnect Ford from Solo. I am not one of those people, I guess I break the mold.

Harrison Ford is a one off, a superstar.. they weren't going to find a clone.

Yeah they could have got someone with a closer voice, height and so on.. but in most cases those actors would have done an impersonation. A parody.

Anthony Ingruber would have been a parody, in my opinion. It would have felt like a youtube video at times, a straight to DVD movie. Alden brought enough of himself to the performance to keep it grounded and honest.

It was the moment Han fell on the floor with Chewie laughing.. that I finally accepted Alden.

I'm a bit late to the party, but I too loved Alden's portrayal of Han Solo. All of his mannerisms and actions felt exactly like a young Han. He even managed to capture some of Ford's subtleties. I'd love to see him in a sequel, which is looking to be unlikely, or in another spin off like the rumored Boba Fett movie, which is probably more likely.

Like many I was always a big Han Solo fan and I'll say that I personally got more out of Ehrenreich's Han than Ford's Han. It's not that the character was better, or the actor was better, or anything like that. It's that the character not only had more time on screen for me to, invest into, but the character was more, open. What I mean is that Han from the original series, while cool and roguish and such, was also a very closed person, as would be expected from the character type. Very stand-offish and aloof, not wanting to connect with anyone and so making it difficult to connect with. All I could really connect with was the outside; the facade; the image, if you know what I mean. There was no "personal level" of connection because of his nature which bordered on stoic. When he did start to open up, it was because of Leia and it was romantic so it was like, the rogue is lowering his shields and now what I'm seeing is romantic Han. Which I appreciate, sure. I like romance as much as the next person who also likes it. But that's pretty much the end of Han "Solo"; Big Bad Bill is Sweet William now, as it goes.

But Ehrenreich's Han isn't closed off. He's even trying to connect, almost with everyone he meets. He's to the point that he's calling people that just almost caused his death by Wookie, "good friends!" because they turn their ship around to come back for him (though in reality, they were only coming back for Chewie). His shields aren't up, and I thought his unstoppable enthusiasm was great. So in this movie, I'm seeing Han, he's front and center, he's open to connection, his attitude of a "good feeling about this" (which came through in all of his scenes) made that connection easy to recapitulate; whereas in episode 4, I'm not seeing Han I'm seeing a closed-off Han that is really just a kind-of jaded exterior, he's not front and center, he's not open to connection, and his attitude of a "bad feeling about this" wasn't easy to return.

Another point for me was the ability to invest in Ehrenreich's Han to a much greater degree. In this movie, everything Han does is in a desire to get him where he feels he needs to be, and I invest and empathize more with the character facing and having to overcome obstacles that are separating him from where he is and where he needs to be; the proverbial stakes seem higher to me in such a case. Whereas the episode 4 Han was already there. That's not to say there's no reason to invest in Han and what he's doing in the original trilogy, but at that time it's more like, group stakes. The investment is spread out among multiple characters because they're all in this together. So the focus of investment isn't specific to one character, so it doesn't feel as personal, as it were.

I think for the same reasons I would say that I got more out of Chewie in this movie than in the others. It's again not that the character is better or the actor is better, it's just that there's more to devote to him when the focus is more limited, and that allows me to make greater investments and connections and so feel more of the character.

Because of all of this I am honestly beginning to think, I'm liking the idea of these "solo" movies. I think I could really get into them.

Reviving this thread just to share this comparison photoset I saw on Tumblr. He really captured many of his expressions despite little physical resemblance.

@AnnaSkywalker That is incredible, thanks for sharing! I too was very impressed with Alden's ability to give us his "take" on Han Solo without just trying to imitate Harrison Ford. When you think of the pressure that was on him, with so much negativity, he really delivered a pretty amazing performance.

Ehrenreich pretty much pulled off the impossible -- filling the shoes of one of the most beloved characters and actors of all time. By that measure alone Solo is a miracle. While it will never be recognised by the Oscars or similar awards shows, Alden's performance is one for the ages simply due to the insane measuring stick he was held up against. I truly hope he eventually gets the praise he deserves and isnt forever under the shadow of a box office disappointment.
