Luke may be the last 'known' Jedi, staying away from the politics of government, training those who will be the new order in secret.

Great post! We very well may be entering a gray zone for the jedi as you've theorized. But while this makes perfect sense on paper, for the average moviegoer, it can lead to a very dark and confusing film. When we don't know who is the bad guy, or why the good guy is going rogue, we don't know who to root for. I get that this makes for interesting and complex character studies, but after the PT, I think JJ and co. are going to keep things simple and straightforward.

Side note: I can't stand the constant 'echoing' of themes in each trilogy. I suppose it's done to reinforce key messages and make things familiar to anyone who's ever seen a Star Wars film. But do they have to be so on the nose? Do we really need a war, an opening pan down shot, an I am you father moment in 8? Ugh, it's all so uninspired... On paper. In execution is where things work or not though.

Also, I really enjoy the notion of echoing the OT yet flipping the order which someone posted above. At least that would keep us all on our toes much more than a beat by beat echoing of the OT just with the next gen.

It would make for an interesting relationship between Leia and any of her children, if she has any, that are to be trained in the new order.

WOW!!! GREAT POST! TIDMADT you're a genius! I like the idea But I like the Idea of the Jedi as a separate faction better. Your Idea is very interesting. On a Scale of 1-10 I'd give it 9.5.

neat idea for sure! i don't know if i agree that the light side ultimately leads to stagnation, though; i always figured the Jedi Council and Order as a whole were corrupt due to issues other than an unhealthy addiction to the light side of the Force. the way i see it, Qui-Gon had it right in that living in the moment is the best way to be balanced with the universe/Force. the Jedi Council focused more on helping the Republic than what the Force was actually telling them, leading them to stagnation and failure. the Sith, on the other hand, feel the Force and want to direct and control it themselves. this isn't inherently evil, but it often corrupts and leads to ego issues, among other things. i personally don't think there is a light or dark side of the Force: it's what you do with the Force that dictates which "side" you belong to.

so, going back to the original post! i think it's spot on. the parallel of the Sith being almost destroyed by the Jedi, only to have the Jedi be almost destroyed by the Sith, creates an interesting way to look at how this new trilogy will pan out. i'd love for there to be a common threat that brings the Jedi and Sith face to face in cooperation. ultimately they all use the same Force, just with different methods; maybe a true Jedi order exists in a blend of these. the story would be about knowing which actions are good and which are bad, which is exactly what we've been learning to expect. good stuff!

Well...at the end of RotJ there is (as far as we know) only one Jedi and zero Sith left in the galaxy. So unification might not be that hard.

Au contraire... Bane led the Sith to Unknown Space where they were rebuilding their empire until the time of return... Plagueis was a Sith, but he wasn't the last Sith, nor the only one, when he found Palpatine...

That's pre-Bane. Like thousands of years before, Knights of the Old Republic times.
