Star Wars seems like a franchise greatly suited for the genre of real-time strategy (RTS), but there hasn't been a console RTS game tied to the franchise since Empire At War from Petroglyph Games (alongside its expansion pack, Forces of Corruption) back in 2006. But there might just be a future for the series.

There have been talks of a reboot of the video game franchise since 2019, when one of the developers told a fan that Electronic Arts was interested in potentially producing a new game in the series with Petroglyph. Now, nearly three years later, another fan has asked a similar question - and although it seems that the possibility of a new game in the series is dependent on a handful of factors regarding the schedules of both companies, the door for a sequel may be open if Petroglyph and Lucasfilm Games can commit to something together.

Here's a transcript of the conversation between u/Kartoffelaffe and Ted Morris:

The developers have noticed the enduring popularity of their original game, its expansion, and the extensive game-modding community that expands the scope of what the original titles, and provided a patch update fifteen years after the game originally came out. Whether we'll see a new, official title in the series remains to be seen, but for now, we've got some hope that the stars will align and this franchise will explore the realm of RTS gameplay once more.

Star Wars: Empire at War is available to purchase for Microsoft Windows and Apple Macintosh.

This sounds cool. Hey @Andrew Waples you know a lot about gaming, is a real time strategy game sort of like an old hex map wargame?
