Princess Leia is the focus of the next Entertainment Weekly piece by Anthony Breznican. Rian Johnson delves into the status of the Resistance, Leia's unwavering resolve, and Carrie Fisher's dynamic final performance in the Star Wars saga.

Thanks to Anthony Breznican, we have yet another great article in Entertainment Weekly. Although the Resistance destroyed the First Order's Starkiller base, the Republic was left DECIMATED with the capitol among other planets in the republic being destroyed by the super weapon. A character not unfamiliar to loss and despair (see Alderaan), Leia must once again remain strong, with resolve and lead the only way she knows how:

Johnson goes on to talk about his collaboration with Fisher, a very talented writer in her own right, about where Leia's state of mind is amidst these recent dark times:

Oscar Isaac, who grew close with Fisher on the set of The Force Awakens spoke about Poe and Leia's relationship, and how it ultimately shapes what type of leader he is capable of being:

As we know Poe and Leia have a lot of scenes together in The Last Jedi, Isaac has previously joked about how one of the first days on set involved Carrie slapping him, taking upwards of twenty takes to get it right. We know, just as their characters are, these two became close in real life, and there is no doubt Carrie has left a lasting impact on Oscar Isaac.

One of the new characters in The Last Jedi is Admiral Holdo, played by Laura Dern. We don't know much about the character, other than she is a part of the Resistance, and it appears with purpose, that Rian Johnson wants to keep it that way for now:

Johnson concludes by echoing what we've been hearing. That although this is Carrie's final performance in Star Wars, the film was made obviously having no expectation of that being the case. Nevertheless, it appears we are truly in store for a great swan song from the Star Wars legend, which is now only four months away.

Lucasfilm has confirmed that Episode IX is being rewritten out of respect for Fisher's passing, although 'Leia’s impact will continue to reverberate'. This may all but confirm that they will not recast the character for the final episode of the sequel trilogy.

Here is Breznican talking about Carrie Fisher/Leia in The Last Jedi:

As we prepare for Carrie Fisher's final Star Wars film, we leave you with her simple yet tear inducing final quote from the behind the scenes reel at D23.

    <p style='text-align: center;']'It's about family, and that's what's so powerful about it'</p>

They're really holding their cards close to their chest on this Holdo, I hope it's not an anti-climax. I'm still confused as to how she is meant to be another Resistance Leader when the organisation is meant to be so small.

Also, confirmation that the NR is absolutely gone. F**k sake. Thanks JJ.

I really am preparing for Leia's funeral on the film. This will be heart breaking. I cried during Padme's funeral scene in episode III and this one will be ten times harder to see. If this will be shown in the film. And I really hope that Leia's life will not be in vain as well life of Han Solo. There must be hope left.Kylo must wake up from Dark Side .

I would like a 'For Carrie' to appear either before 'A long time ago....' or as the first text in the end credits.

But...the actress died. I know that filming of ep . VIII has been completed before that sad moment, however ,how it will be made that she doesnt't die in ep VIII and than she is no more in ep IX?

It will be to my record for the first time that someone's death in Star Wars movie was announced in opening scroll of the next movie, let say in ep IX intro they say Leia unfortunately died in between ep VIII and IX.?

And, personally I would feel its slight, not giving enough honor to Leia, Leia deserves its ferewell in the movie(just like her mother, Padme, and in fact all major characters which all died in the film.( Yoda, Padme, Han, Obi-van, Palpatine, Vader, all the others).

Maybe ep. IX will start with Leia's funeral ?

Do not get me wrong I don't like funerals, but how to make all of this with Leia, does anyone knows?

They'll leave that to the end credits for sure, although at the start wouldn't be so bad.

    I think there's two options:
    • If VIII ends on another cliff-hanger which IX will immediately continue from, they might go with explaining away her sudden absence in the crawl e.g. 'While GENERAL LEIA is focussed on rebuilding the NEW REPUBLIC...'
    • If its set a few years after, I wouldn't mind IX to open on a funeral scene as a final tribute for Carrie, again setting it up in the crawl.
I personally would prefer the former.

To help ease the sting of Leia's sudden absence, I wonder if they should bring back Lando for IX. Lando has been conspicuously absent so far in this new trilogy which strikes me as odd seeing how he was one of the gang. If they are deciding to write out the character of Leia out of respect for Carrie, us welcoming back another OT character may soften the pervading sense of emptiness her absence will bring. I think it would be a far more respectful move because you are not toying with Carrie's Leia in the form of a recast, or CGI ect. Instead of replacing her, you would just be cushioning the emptiness her character's absence will bring by allowing us to see another old, familiar face.

There was a rumor a while ago that, in the end credits, there would be a tribute to Carrie Fisher including an original piece written for her by John Williams. I don't know if there's any truth to this, but it would be really amazing for them to do that.

I'm still suspicious about Leia's fate in this film. Although it's unlikely, I do still wonder if what they're saying is a bit of a cover-up and Leia was always intended to die in this film. (That wouldn't necessarily mean that she wasn't supposed to be part of Episode IX, though, as she still could've appeared as a Force ghost or in Force visions or flashbacks.) Oscar's comments about Leia knowing she wouldn't be around forever and wanting to pass the torch onto him make me wonder if her death was their plan all along.

Also, I know people talked about The Last Jedi having a funeral for Han Solo (which, as much as his death hurt, it seems a bit ridiculous because we know he wouldn't have wanted one and it wouldn't add anything to the plot), but I think Leia is really the character who will deserve a funeral (probably in Episode IX, though), assuming Lucasfilm does kill the character off (which, I think is their best option, at this point). It would make sense because Leia was a respected, high-ranking individual in the Rebellion/Resistance, and unlike Han, the actor that portrayed the character also died, so it would give fans some closure as well.

My mother saw an article where they told fans to stay for after the credits. Maybe that's it?

That might be it! Do you have a link to the article? I believe I was told on here that the initial source of the rumor isn't always accurate/reliable, but I do feel like it's a possibility. If they really want to pay homage to Carrie/Leia, there is no better way than in her final film and her final time playing the character that made her a superstar. Even if it's a simple "For Carrie..." message or something in the credits, I'm sure they'll do something for her.

I'll have to ask her about it. I know there's no actual hidden scenes. Rian said no to that, so all I can think of is a tribute to her. Likely it's just more rumors to stir things.

Yeah, I'm not expecting a post-credits scene or anything like that. I think it'll probably just be a tribute to Carrie, if anything, and to be honest, that's how it should be.

Yup, that's who it was! I had no knowledge of who he was until I came here and people said that he's wrong more often than not. (It's a good idea, though, so I still hope Lucasfilm does it—or something similar, just to honor Carrie/Leia!)
