Yes I'm sure the script is already completed. It's also not crazy to think they are working on the rough script for 9. I know that sound nuts but when they figured out the story for 7 they must have worked out the basics for the 8 and 9. These stories are written as trilogies not individual movies. Plus when you think about it episode 8 is less than 2 years away so the production for it will be tighter than it was for TFA

There is at least a "shooting script". There can always be re-writes, but if they are shooting, you can bet there is a version of script done. and I agree with jedimasterjohnny, Lucasfilm has made it sound like Kasdan and the story group (and maybe JJ) blocked out the big moments in this trilogy, leaving the details and connecting bits to be given life by the respective writers for 8 and 9.

I would imagine the plot outline is complete. There'll be script changes throughout the shooting of the movie.

unless something has changed I believe Rian Johnson is writing the script for 8 and at the very least the treatment for 9.

I think the script is drafted, pending changes. Risky really, considering they don't know how TFA will be received yet.

What if people don't like elements of TFA? That could impact EpVIII in a BIG way....

At this point, they have the entire trilogy already mapped out. Rian Johnson's shooting the Skellig Michael scenes for Episode VIII now, because he won't have the time to shoot it next year. He's working with a much smaller timeframe of production than Abrams had for TFA.

At this point, based on the rumors I've heard on TFA, the elements I'd wager to be potentially controversial are stuff that simply can't be changed in Episode VIII. The best bet is to power on through and do as much as possible to make the best film that they can.

    This. ^^^^

How many of you think the script of AOTC was finished before TPM was out? In the draft George Lucas probably had Jar Jar Binks becoming jedi, Kitster the new Han Solo and the big twist may have been Boss Nass joining the trade federation. Not saying AOTC was good, it's almost as painful to watch as TPM, but it could have been worse.

Actually, I see AotC as the worst film in the PT personally and I know that's become a relatively common opinion of a lot of people.

However, regarding your main point of how Lucas wouldn't have written a script for AotC yet when he was working on TPM: That's true. He wouldn't have. That being said, the industry is very different today than how it was back in 1999-2002. We're living in the post-Avengers world, where the film companies are constantly trying to recreate the financial success that Marvel Studios has had with the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Disney and Lucasfilm are taking the Star Wars franchise in a very different direction than we're used to. We're going to be getting a new Star Wars film at least once a year for the foreseeable future. The gap between the release of TFA and Episode VIII alone (a year and a half) is roughly half the usual release gap between any previous Star Wars film. The first film in the new trilogy isn't even out yet and we already know who are directing the second and third films.

In other words, Lucasfilm most certainly has a specific vision for how this trilogy will play out in its entirety. Was that the case exactly when Abrams was shooting TFA last year? Probably not at first, but that's exactly why they picked Rian Johnson to direct VIII and write both it and IX while Abrams was neck-deep into the production stage of TFA. So that he could begin the prep work for more specifically mapping out the course of this trilogy.

Regardless of how it is received, they shouldn't be changing scripts based on fan reaction. Its up to Johnson, Kennedy and whoever else is breaking the story to come up with what they think is best. If they zig and zag based off fan reaction, then the integrity of the trilogy is lost.
