This is something that I have been wondering for a while. It is contingent on a couple of factors:

Is Darth Plagueis in the new trilogy? and What are the abilities of Force Ghosts?

First, jumping on the theory that Snoke is Plagueis. Let's say that because he has discovered the ability to cheat death - Plagueis is immortal.

Then going by what Obi-Wan said to Vader in ANH when they were duelling - "if you strike me down I will become more powerful than you can imagine." This could mean that force ghosts are one with the force as Yoda said and therefore may be able too use the force to its full capacity.

I'm picturing a final duel where Rey confronts Plagueis and is being beaten mercilessly. Then Luke as a force ghost (again guessing that he dies) appears to battle Plagueis and is joined by Yoda, Obi-Wan and even Anakin.

This would be the ultimate Sith / Jedi battle. Sith immortal in the flesh v. Jedi immortal in the force.

Would be a mind blowing spectacular ending. Especially combined with a Starkiller Base v. Resistance Death Star battle (as I suggested in a previous post.)

    All HUGELY speculative of course.

I cannot tell you how much I don't want the conclusion of Star Wars to be a cone-head lizard man fighting a bunch of old-man ghosts.

The thing about this is that there wouldn't be much sentimentality behind it. Star Wars, at its core, is about people and relationships. That's why the prequels didn't resonate with some. What of the heroes that we've come to (hopefully) love, and the villains we've come to hate? This all-Force blow-out fight would really ring hollow, I think.

If the sequel trilogy is any good at all, we should grow to love the heroes and hate the villains. Plus it would bring Yoda, Luke and Obi-wan back into play who are beloved characters from the OT.

This battle would be one of 3 running fights like how ROTJ ended. Big heroes v big baddie, the 1st Order v the Resistance and possibly Rey and/or Finn fighting against Kylo Ren.

In ROJ Ben said to Luke "Yoda will always be with you".

So it should be interesting to learn, whether we are still somehow going to see Yoda in the ST or not.

Can't help the feeling that Lucas deliberately created this line to have the option to have Yoda in the ST.

Already been something similar in the Harry Potter series... at the end of the Goblet of Fire I think it was.

I think the final fight will be R2 D2 vs. Darth 3PO! ...that would be more plausible.

I think you're on to something with this theory. It's epic and cinematic. It ties in with the whole legacy/generational aspect of the saga. If not Force Ghosts, how about all of them guiding/enhancing Rey or Finn (or both) in the final showdown with Plagueis? It can visually look like they are overlaid over top of Rey or Finn.

    I like this theory.

Thanks! I like you're idea that maybe the force ghosts are just guiding Rey and/or Finn. Maybe Snoke (Plagueis) can't even see them during the battle.

Just a guess here, but I'm thinking force ghosts can't effect things physically. Obi Wan tells Luke in ESB that if he choses to face Vader he cannot interfere, that statement seems very telling to me, while still being open to interpertation.

I think that the Ghosts will have some kind of role to play, but ultimately the big fight between good and evil will take place in the Land of the Living. The Ghosts are merely whispers and memories in the ears of the Jedi, voices of hope in times of despair.

I'd like to see the Skywalker family take out the Knights of Ren and Plagueis.

Rey fights Kylo and turns him to the light. Luke fights Plagueis, and towards the end with the help of Rey and Kylo, defeats him.

Yeah for sure we've never seen the force ghosts have a physical effect on anything, but that doesn't mean that they can't. Obi Wan told Vader that when he struck him down he would become more powerful than he could imagine. Also, I think that Obi Wan couldn't interfere with Luke's fight with Vader because it was Luke's fight that he must do alone as part of his path to becoming a Jedi. That's how I understood it.

Yeah, and little things like Kenovie brushing aside a tree was simple the result of the VFX of that time .

Final battle I'd have to say would be Rey and Kylo Vs. Snoke/KOR
