I have always had the notion that Luke in fact, was not THE last singular Jedi. Now the new movie title has said it, BUT remember that Jedi is also plural, so.....

    Thoughts??

"If Skywalker returns the last Jedi will rise."
This is a pretty vague statement too. It could be singular or plural like the title. We have to wait and see.

Is it not: "If Skywalker returns, the [edit: new] Jedi will rise......."

Oh yeah, you're right. I mixed it with "[...]leading them to THE LAST JEDI.". My bad...

Remember, there's also Ezra and Kanan....although I think Kanan will die. If Ezra were to surface, remember that he's two days older than Luke and have could've secretly had a padawan or two. I've just always had a REAL, REAL problem with the fact that Obi-Wan and Yoda were the ONLY two (out of THOUSANDS of Jedi) that survived...like they found the ONLY two hiding places in the Galaxy.

You could always also take that to mean "The others will come forward" as well! :)

I think the tittle its ambiguous. First half of the movie Kylo meets Luke and say something like this: "You are the last jedi and now I will kill you". Last momments of the movie Leia says to Rey: "You are the las hope, the last jedi".

    I love the tittle. TLJ

Oh so there is a reference to Snoke saying "....the last jedi". That could also have a plural meaning. Interesting!

Yes, it could also have a plural meaning. I'm so hyped.

I don't think the hiding was the integral part of that; it was the ambush that preceded it. So really, the fault was that every single Jedi was fighting a war (whilst being surrounded by their hidden enemy the entire time) and there was no measure of self-preservation. But yeah I see where you are going with that..

I like to think that Luke knows of a handful of Jedi / padawans / force users that he could potentially call to his side, to train under him or to at least fight with and for him, but that his belief system has been shaken and he needs to get some things straight before truly reviving the Jedi Order. And if he doesn't, well, then he will be The Last Jedi.

I think the title means that the Jedi Order is dead. I think that Luke, in his isolation, has found another way to train light-side force users. So Luke will be The Last Jedi, and Rey will be the first to be trained in the new way.

Uh yes, and yes again! It was too easy to say "They're all dead except these two" because there were THOUSANDS of them ALL OVER the Galaxy....I mean c'mon, don't make it so "Cheap and easy" just to make them "all gone because we said so"...it just can't be so easy. :)

The title suggests the following to me, in my opinion.

    1. That Luke Skywalker will be hunted
    2. That Snoke's proclaimation that "If Skywalker returns, the Jedi will rise......." will Force the hands of both the remaining First Order and Resistance factions to counter any action by the other in support of either "The Last Jedi" or "The Jedi Killer"
    3. That both Kylo Ren and Rey will face emotional and tribual tests which will pull at each from the opposite side of the Force, to the point that both may have to choose or face the consequences of there past (in Kylo's case these actions could be tied to Luke, his father and his mother)
    4. That the Knights of Ren(s) origins will be revealed, that Kylo Ren will be well-trained and powerful and his impact, character development and presence will affect the overall tone of the film; his interactions will challenge Luke, Rey and the bond they have to each other, and towards him.

Yes, perhaps the inference is that as time moves forward... with the ying of Sith effectively 'gone' the yang of the Jedi also fades, with both succeeded by something else.... a new Order for a new time.

Great title, I suspect taking the title too literally isn't Rian's intention.

This! I would be on board with this. Although, seeing the Jedi become "extinct" would deeply sadden me. But it does seem that they are trending toward something not as clear cut as Jedi vs. Sith, and more just light/dark (grey?) force users instead. Perhaps there is a tolerance for the light-side to pull, or borrow, from the dark, but not in excess. And the opposite is also true. Perhaps Luke realizes that no matter what happens, it is necessary to have both sides.

Oh, you've gone and said exactly what I was getting at! :D

Yes, the ying and the yang of the Force remains; the Jedi and Sith do not.

    It's a great title.

It can be taken at face value, but it could certainly mean more.

Luke is the Last Jedi, and could well be the final Jedi. His new Order and his father's fall and rise? Being a Jedi invites conflict and challenge.

I think we see a new group of Force users rise by the end of the ST, even if we never get X, XI and XII.

Nice comments here. I like the potential implications of the title. I also agree to go with the simplest explanation that it refers to the current state of things, that Luke is actually the last jedi now. there might be more, or not, that's what VIII and IX could be about.
