The Scottish publication Daily Record is reporting that a Star Wars film is planning to be shot in Scotland next June.

Whilst the paper suggests that the shoots will be for the first instalment of Rian Johnson’s new trilogy of films, Johnson has admitted recently that he is only in the planning phases with his production, and with Episode IX beginning principal photography next June, I think it’s safe to assume that these shoots will be for J.J. Abrams’ film instead of Johnson’s.

The location where the shoots will reportedly take place is around the area of The Rest and Be Thankful; otherwise known as the major road A83, this beautiful mountainside detour got its name from a stone which was erected upon its completion as a military road in 1750.

Empire listed Scotland amongst the locations shot during the production of 2015’s The Force Awakens, and another major blockbuster, Avengers: Infinity War, finished shooting some footage in Scotland earlier this year, and so this would serve as the most recent of major boosts to the country’s film industry.

Speaking to Daily Record, VisitScotland chief executive said:

Scotland is a familiar sight on the big screen with recent major productions such as Transformers: The Last Knight, King Arthur: Legend of the Sword and the soon-to-be released Avengers: Infinity War all taking advantage of our wonderful landscape and rich heritage. Set-jetting – where people visit locations and other destinations associated with movies – is a growing trend, with 40 per cent of all UK visitors inspired to come here after seeing it on film or television. A further major production, such as Star Wars – one of the biggest cinematic franchises in the world – coming to Scotland would be a huge benefit to tourism and the economy, and a blockbusting addition to the discerning film fan’s set-jetting itinerary.

Scottish Labour’s culture spokeswoman Claire Baker MSP also had this to say:

The fact such a successful and popular worldwide franchise will be filmed in Scotland will excite fans and also provide a welcome boost to the economy. I hope the producers take advantage of the skills people in Scotland have to offer, so as many local people as possible can find work and Scotland’s fantastic creative and digital community can take full advantage.

Episode IX is currently scheduled to begin principal photography in June 2018, and for release on December 20th 2019.

Yeah well, every few months another location claims to be a filming set for Star Wars, I would wait till we get something more substantial.
