may 26th 2017 needs to get here asap

J.J. ABRAMS recently read the script for Episode VIII of Star Wars. And he had a reaction to it that his lifelong friend, “The Force Awakens” actor Greg Grunberg, had not ever heard from the director over their decades together in the industry.

“He read it and said something he never, ever says, He said: ‘It’s so good, I wish I were making it. He may have said something one time on ‘Lost,’ with Damon [Lindelof, the co-creator], but I never hear him express regret like that.” - Greg Grunberg

The director taking the chair on the Star Wars saga's next instalment is Rian Johnson (Brick,Looper and The Brothers Bloom).

STAR WARS EPISODE VIII is slated for release on May 26th, 2017

As I understand it, Rian Johnson wrote the script for Episode VIII, and I loved Looper, so I think the next part of the ST is in good hands with RJ helming it.

I've also heard that RJ is writing at least an outline for Episode IX if not the actual script. I can't wait to see what's next for the Star Wars saga.

Regardless of the outcome, you can be sure of this
    - They will say the script is great well into production
    - Then they will say the locations and practical effects are great well into editing
    - The they wil say the actors are great well into postproduction and release marketing

ps. I can imagine though that on a personal level (with all of the weight off his shoulders) JJ would like to direct another one..seems logical

    - even better script

    - fits with Disney's DISNEY a movies better and gives a better gap between R1 & VIII .

would have liked to have had continuity in the directorial chair, but i feel confident the producers' oversight will keep this from getting off target.

need to go watch Looper so i can see what Johnson's got.

He's talented but it's very..."HIM" in the sense that you cans clearly tell it's HIS movie which sort of worries me because instead of being A SW movie then it might be A "Rian Johnson" movie .

The best way to know what kind of "director" Johnson is as opposed to his exceptional qualities as a "writer", is to watch Looper first and then either Star Wars Episode VII, Super 8 or Star Trek (or the other way around).
You might not be as impressed with Johnson as you previously expected. I very much like Looper though. It is a great movie. The story is phenomenal. But cinematography, camera work etc. is at some points a bit dull.

Does anyone know if Daniel Mindel is also head cinematography for Episode VIII? He did an awesome job with Star Wars episode VII. Would be a shame to lose him. He can give Johnson fabulous writing skill the images and visual quality it deserves.

Looper is one of my favourite movies, but it had a lot of problems. The great story made up for the other problems, and this may be a good thing for star wars since I guess this time he willl be surrounded by so many people that will hopefully correct those kind of problems and at the same time preserving his great story telling.

I think that it's either him or Rian's guy .

Because they have talent and it will give them time to further reigns (hopefully) the script .

No... on IMDB it lists Steve Yedlin as DOP, so same guy who's worked on all of Rian's films.

I agree about Mindel, his cinematography is very exciting in conjunction with Abram's directing talents.

Though I thought Yedlin did a fantastic job with Looper... those shots where people appear in a split second & get shot are just so intense & brutal... takes me by surprise every time. & the rainmaker shots... I remember at the end of the movie my friend made me rewind the trippy part (haha).

I personally think VII originally being less than a year and half after TFA seemed a little rushed to me. Quality does take a little time. Plus TFA was supposed to been released last may if Disney had gotten what they wanted but JJ pushed for it to be Dec. I think it will be great. TFA showed they have a good cast to work with.
