SPECULATION Eyes and Eye (Cyclops?), Sight, Vision, Identity: Why are these themes so prominently marketed?

Eyes. Eye. Sight. Vision. Identity. Why are these themes so prominently marketed? Why are they important?

There have been three major pieces of marketing that reference these themes since I wrote what's became known as the "Cyclops theory" thread on Oct. 21st:
    1. Character Posters: Weapons cover the right eye, which draws attention to both eyes, the right eye (why is it covered?) AND the left eye (why is it uncovered?). We're left wondering why eyes are important figuratively.

      1.jpg
    2. International Trailer #2: I think the sun in the TIE sunset shot definitely looks like some sort of eye being partially eclipsed by two huge celestial bodies on its top and bottom hemispheres as eyelids. And the TIE fighter itself has always looked like a huge flying eye.

      2.jpg

    3. TV Spot #1: Maz: "I have lived long enough to see the same eyes in different people. I see your eyes. I know your eyes."

      33.jpg 3.jpg 333.jpg
These 3 different pieces, the character posters, the international trailer and the TV spot, are obviously following a thematic marketing strategy communicated via both imagery and voice over dialogue, but I think it's a safe bet that these elements hint at the film's story and what may potentially be the story's central theme. I'm definitely leaning toward the filmmakers drawing upon classical mythology as story inspiration for SW:TFA. See my prior threads on the direct correlations to mythology (Homer's Odyssey and Ovid's Metamorphoses):

Other than the 3 examples detailed above, are there other notable eye/vision references from TFA marketing? Could they be in the story?

And another grounded theory springing out of piece #3 (in fact, it may be much more solid than Cyclops theory): "Your Eyes" may actually be the name of a presidential candidate. There's precedence:

    deez-nuts-for-president.jpg
Or "Deez Nuts" may be masquerading as "Your Eyes." Just some food for thought or, um, eye candy?

Yes, of course that's true from our perspective, the audience. But why is it important in the story? What is the significance to the characters?

Eye am not sure but for me it could symboleyes"

    1. This Lucas quote: "The third [trilogy will] deal with moral and philosophical problems," Lucas said in 1983. "In Star Wars, there is a very clear line drawn between good and evil. Eventually you have to face the fact that good and evil aren't that clear-cut and the real issue is trying to understand the difference.
    2. The characters haven't been listening to the Force/The Force has been 'dormant' so to speak and they are 'blinded'.
    3. They should've gone to Specsavers.
    4. They are looking for someone but their 'vision' is obscured.
    5. Maybe not about eyes, but it's half their face obscured - suggesting we don't know them yet or that there are two sides to their characters.
    6. In the land of the blind the one eyed man is king?

Eye dunno, let's hope some new info will help us turn the cornea so we're no longer pupils but masters on the subject. Iris my case.

All good. But I love #5 suggesting a duality of character! That's GOLD.

    1. Someone in the marketing department said "hey, lets show close ups of their faces for the posters but so they won't be boring head shots, we will have them put their primary weapon in front of their face."

    2. Nothing to do with eyes. Everything to do with COOL AS HELL!

    3. Maz can see the hero in the eyes of Finn and Rey. She can tell they are going to do great things. Simple as that. Nothing to do with parentage.

I think they are just trying to give the film a more timeless and mythic feeling. I don't know that it was specifically affect the plot.

It's called "Aporia," which is what the majority of us are experiencing leading up to TFA, especially the part of where we feel that something is true but is not, but aren't sure, and then we run in circles, feeling cray cray, and then we feel fine for a moment but then start all over again.

    I
t's probably covered just to make the imagery a tad less boring: no more, no less. And to make the marketing material more cohesive, it's been made to have a ton of similarities throughout. It's similar to how orange/blue is used in most marketing materials because they are both pleasing colors and opposites to our eyes. And also why we see a good vs. bad character having their backs facing each other.

There is none. If Luke is blind, we will collectively, negatively, lose our minds. It just wouldn't happen under LFL and JJ's guidance.

You say that but then in the leaked concept art of 'Rey' entering the cave there is a red/orange and blue colour divide. I think that is very must designed to be based upon the light and the dark. I feel that this simple theme is what is reflected in the poster campaign. It is to show the two sides to the characters. Maybe.

Yeah, nearly most posters and ART for films is in those two hues because they are pleasing to the eyes...it's a simple issue of DI. I doubt we will see that kind of a saturation in the actual filmed movie itself.

There's a discussion about the color of Rey's eye's in her speculation thread. It got me thinking about Daisy Ridley's eyes and her impressive eye acting range/micro expressions.

I know animation has drawn from the empathy humans feel for children/young animals partly due to larger eyes - Walt Disney applied this theory to sell Mickey Mouse. I've also heard from Japanese animators that, in some Manga/Anime media, the "innocent" protagonist characters will often have exaggerated wider eyes to emote sympathy/empathy over the "bad" guys.

After remembering this, between Rey's desert squinting and doe-eyed gazes I can't stop seeing her as a japanime style chrarcter!

The EW article has some great quotes from JJ and LN about how important eyes are to Maz's character.

JJ: “I had this pitch about these goggles that she wore. Her eyes are an important aspect of her character, and you’ll see how it plays out.”
LN: “As an actor for films, your eyes are a lot of the way you communicate anyway...So it was definitely a gift to have that be the means to her magic as a motion-capture character.”

They are clearly doing something with eyes.

Rey's googles have separate eyes. But the new troopers have one. Ren's helmet has one. Weapons obscure the eyes of even the heroes in the posters.

There certainly may be more to all of this but Its clear that they are screaming that war clouds the vision. Those that are lifting weapons risk the same loss of vision and clarity. Beware when you fight the monster you do not become a monster yourself.

Rey Googles stuff? lol. Kidding. Yep, I'm guessing that Rey found those goggles from an OT Stormtrooper helmet on Jakku.

And I like your monster comment. An alternative:

Perhaps to defeat the monster, one must become one.
